Mucoepidermoid carcinoma arising from minor salivary glands at the base of the tongue is rare. Surgical excision of the tumours remains the primary treatment of choice. The prognosis of this tumour depends on optimum clearance of the disease surgically, clinical staging and histopathological grading. Postoperatively, radiotherapy depends on the grading and histopathological features of the tumour. Long-term follow-up is a must to detect early recurrences of oropharyngeal tumours. In our case, the tumour was removed by the transoral route because it was a limited tumour and for better postopera

Schwannomas are benign peripheral nerve sheath tumours with a low risk of malignant transformation. About 25%-40% are in the head and neck region with the posterior third of the tongue being a rather rare site of its growth, and a lesion at this site is understandably difficult to approach and treat. Being benign and encapsulated, surgical excision is in the mainstay of treatment. Symptoms can range from a globus pharyngeus and dysphagia to airway compromise depending on the size and site. Traditionally, a paramedian lip split approach with paramedian mandibulotomy and mandible swing may be us

BACKGROUND: Herein, we evaluated the attributable fraction (AF) of human papillomavirus (HPV)-mediated (HPV+) oropharyngeal carcinomas (OPCs) in Greece over a recent calendar period.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: ORPHEAS, a retrospective, observational, multicenter, cross-sectional study with prospective recruitment, included adult patients with OPC in 2017-2022, each of them with a high-quality, treatment-naïve tumor specimen. The primary endpoint was the HPV-AF, defined as combined positivity for p16INK4a (p16) overexpression and HPV DNA presence by central laboratory testing, among included patien

Recently, organ preservation has gained importance for head and neck malignancies. The negative consequences of the therapies can be reduced without compromising the survival and the quality of life. Accordingly, transoral robotic surgery (TORS) is gaining ground internationally. We have been performing TORS procedures at the University of Pécs since January 2023. We operated on 27 patients until July 2024, including fifteen p16-positive tumors. Neck dissections were performed in 19 cases. The use of TORS is helpful in oropharyngeal cases, where inaccessible structures can be reached minimally

Salivary carcinomas of minor salivary glands are very infrequent tumors. When located in the tongue, the therapeutic strategy may comprise upfront surgery, which may be debilitating, and/or (chemo-)radiotherapy. The aim of this study was to identify the prognostic factors of salivary carcinomas of the tongue in a population-based cohort. This retrospective multicentric study, based on the "Réseau d'Expertise Français sur les Cancers ORL Rares" (REFCOR), included all the patients with a salivary carcinoma of the tongue, diagnosed between January 2009 and December 2018. Dubious slides were revie

INTRODUCTION: Mixed neuroendocrine and non-neuroendocrine neoplasms (MiNENs) refer to a heterogenous group of rare neoplasms which is usually composed of a neuroendocrine population which is either well differentiated and more frequently poorly differentiated along with a non-neuroendocrine component, each of the above accounting for at least 30% of the tumour population. It is most commonly seen in the gastro-entero-pancreatic tract. MiNENs have an aggressive behaviour due to its high grade neuroendocrine component and have poor prognosis. This is the first case reported in literature of a Mi

PURPOSE: Tongue base mucosectomy (TBM) is a well-established procedure in investigating cervical squamous cell carcinoma of occult primary. However, its risks have not been balanced against its benefits with validated tools.
METHODS: A systematic literature review was conducted for reported complications and quality-of-life outcomes following TBM. The complications and quality-of-life outcomes following TBM at our institution are then reported using objective metrics and validated assessment tools, including Performance Status Scale for Head and Neck Cancer Patients (PSS-HNS), University of W

A 53 year old female presented with a six-year history of right-sided slow deterioration in hearing and a feeling of pressure in the right ear. The patient had not experienced any pain but reported some paresthesia of the right half of the tongue, whereas no further other cranial nerve deficits were evident. The otoscopy was unremarkable as well as the rest of the clinical ENT examination except for a slight asymptomatic swelling of the right cheek. Imaging findings showed an expansive tumor infiltrating and destroying the right lateral skull base. The tumor was partially composed of cystic/re

Only a few studies have explored whether high-dose-rate interstitial brachytherapy (HDR-ISBT) can be indicated as a palliative/symptomatic treatment. We present the good results of palliative treatment using HDR-ISBT combined with external beam radiotherapy (ERT) in a patient of base of tongue cancer (cT4aN1M0). The patient was an 81-year-old male who complained of local pain. He had a previous irradiation history for head and neck cancer receiving ERT with systemic chemotherapy and radical surgery 15 years ago. Since it might be difficult for him to receive radical radiation doses using ERT a

Vascular anomalies encompass a range of conditions affecting blood vessel development, categorized as tumors or malformations. Hemangiomas, the most common vascular tumors, involve abnormal endothelial cell proliferation, particularly in hemangiomas, which are prevalent benign tumors arising from mesenchymal tissue in the head and neck. They manifest as capillary, cavernous, or mixed types, affecting areas like the tongue and lips. Hemangiomas of the tongue base are notably rare, emphasizing the complexity of diagnosis and management due to their uncommon occurrence and potential for complicat

INTRODUCTION: Squamous cell carcinoma of unknown primary in the head and neck (HNSCCUP) remains a diagnostic challenge. Tongue base mucosectomy by transoral robotic surgery (TORS-TBM) can increase the diagnostic yield and de-intensify treatment. However, the added value of TORS-TBM as an adjunct to work-up programs for HNSCCUP is unclear. Furthermore, the optimal extent of the procedure and selection criteria remain to be established.
AIM: The primary aim of the present study was to assess the diagnostic yield of TORS-TBM as a supplement to a standardized work-up program, using the Danish nat

BACKGROUND/AIM: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (AdCC) is a rare malignant tumor that primarily affects the salivary glands but can also occur in other organs. Low incidence and unpredictable clinical behavior make AdCC one of the most difficult head and neck tumors to treat.
CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 54-year-old woman with AdCC localized at the base of the tongue, following radical surgical and oncological therapy. Due to advances in palliative oncological treatment, there is a more than five-year survival period before the progression of metastatic disease. Considering the rare occurre

Schwannomas are benign tumours of peripheral nerves originating in the nerve sheaths. Only 1% are reported in the oral cavity. We report a 24-year-old female who presented with a 10-year history of a mass at the base of the tongue with associated odynodysphagia, referred otalgia and loss of weight. Oral examination revealed a large left sided base of tongue mass extending into the vallecula. An open transcervical suprahyoid resection was performed with a good outcome.

PURPOSE: Salivary gland malignancies may have overlapping architectural patterns, tumor morphology, and immunohistochemical phenotypes, presenting challenges in precise classification. Molecular phenotyping has become quite useful for providing an additional diagnostic modality, and potential drug targets. Here we reported a young female patient with salivary gland tumor of the tongue base harboring genetic alterations by next generation sequencing (NGS).
METHODS: The morphological, immunohistochemical and molecular features of this case were described, and related literature was reviewed.

PURPOSE: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (AdCC) of the head and neck harbors MYB/MYBL1::NFIB fusions in around 60% of cases, with unfavorable long-term survival due to frequent recurrences and metastases, currently lacking effective targeted therapy. The study aims to identify actionable alterations and to elucidate the molecular underpinnings of MYB/MYBL1::NFIB-negative AdCC using a large targeted RNA sequencing panel.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We retrospectively searched our MSK-Solid Fusion clinical sequencing database for head and neck AdCC sequenced between 2016 and 2023. Of a total of 55 cases, 28

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate whether the base of the tongue harbours a transformation zone (TZ), i.e., an initiation site for papillomavirus infection, analogous to that in the uterine cervix by examining the histological structure of Von Ebner's gland ducts in the vallate papillae.
METHODS: Immunohistochemical staining and immunofluorescence techniques were used to detect markers associated with the uterine cervical TZ in the vallate papillae, and these results were compared with those in uterine cervical tissue. Additionally, tongue samples from mouse papillomavirus (
