Squamous papilloma involving the mandible: A case report and descriptive literature review.

Squamous papilloma is a benign neoplasm that originates from the stratified squamous epithelium of the mucous membrane. Its principal etiological factor is human papillomavirus infection, with a predilection for manifesting within the oral cavity. Squamous papilloma predominantly affects regions on the palate, cheeks, lips and tongue. However, to the best of our knowledge, the occurrence of squamous papilloma within the confines of the mandible remains unreported hitherto. The present report documents a case of squamous papilloma involving the mandible who was managed at the First Affiliated H

Neck Point-of-Care Ultrasound for the Identification of Tongue-Base Cysts in Infants With Stridor: A Case Series.

Tongue-base cysts, which are occasionally categorized as vallecular cysts, are a rare yet potentially life-threatening cause of stridor in pediatric patients. Studies reporting the use of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) to identify tongue-base cysts are lacking. We present the case series of four infants in whom tongue-base cysts were detected using neck POCUS.

[Transoral approach in surgery for chordomas extending into craniovertebral junction: a systematic review of the literature].

UNLABELLED: To date, treatment of chordomas involves maximal tumor resection followed by proton therapy. Various approaches are used depending on location of tumor (transcranial and through natural anatomical openings (nose, mouth), as well as their combinations). Although transoral approach has been introduced into neurosurgical practice for a long time, it is routinely used in patients with chordoma only in certain hospitals in the world. OBJECTIVE: To analyze postoperative outcomes in patients with chordomas of skull base and craniovertebral joint after transoral surgery. MATERIAL AND MET

Reconstruction techniques using free jejunal transfer for total pharyngolaryngectomy with total glossectomy.

BACKGROUND: Total pharyngolaryngectomy is sometimes combined with total glossectomy for advanced hypopharyngeal or cervical esophageal cancers involving the tongue base. The optimal reconstruction method for total pharyngolaryngectomy with total glossectomy has not been established due to a considerable diameter mismatch between the floor of mouth and the esophageal stump. This report describes two reconstruction methods using free jejunal transfer. METHODS: Five consecutive patients who underwent total pharyngolaryngectomy with total glossectomy were included, with a mean age of 67.0 (range

A Descriptive Study of Quality of Life Following Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy and Transoral Robotic Surgery for Human Papillomavirus-Associated Oropharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Patients with oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) treated with radiation-based therapy suffer from short- and long-term toxicities that affect quality of life (QOL). Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) has an established role in the management of early OPSCC but adjuvant treatment is often indicated postoperatively due to the high incidence of nodal metastasis associated with advanced human papillomavirus (HPV)-related OPSCC. To overcome the need for adjuvant radiation therapy (RT), neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by TORS and neck dissection (ND) is proposed. This study ai

Survival outcomes and failure patterns for oropharyngeal cancers treated with simultaneous integrated boost in intensity modulated radiotherapy (SIB-IMRT) and concurrent chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) has become a standard radiotherapy treatment delivery option owing to the advantages it offers in terms of target coverage and organ sparing. Furthermore, the ability to introduce different fractionation for different targets lets us deliver higher doses to the high-risk areas and lower doses to the elective volumes at the same sitting, referred to as simultaneous integrated boost (SIB). In the current study, we intended to retrospectively analyze the clinical outcomes and patterns of the failure of oropharyngeal cancers treated with SIB-IMRT

Bridging the gap: exploring the causal relationship between metformin and tumors.

OBJECTIVE: Numerous studies have reported that metformin can reduce the risk of tumor development. However, some of the results of these studies are conflicting, necessitating a more reliable evaluation. METHODS: We conducted a Mendelian randomization phenome-wide association study (MR-PheWAS) of tumors to explore the causal relationship between metformin and tumors. Two cohorts of patients taking metformin were obtained from the UK Biobank. Complete phenotype data of the tumors were obtained from FinnGen_R10. We elucidated the causal relationship using a two-sample Mendelian randomization (M

Update on Pathologic Conditions, Imaging Findings, Prevention, and Management of Human Papillomavirus-related Neoplasms.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection that proliferates in the squamous epithelium and is the most common source of viral-related neoplasms. Low-risk subtypes (HPV-6 and -11) cause respiratory papillomas (laryngeal, tracheal, and bronchial) and condyloma acuminata of the penis, anus, and perineal region (anogenital warts). High-risk subtypes (HPV-16, -18, -31, and -33) are responsible for oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) that involves the tongue base, tonsils, posterior pharyngeal wall, and larynx and malignancies of the anogenital region (canc

Oral and oropharyngeal NUT carcinoma: a multicentre screening study of poorly differentiated oral cancer.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Nuclear protein testis (NUT) carcinoma (NC) is a rare and highly aggressive tumour characterised by chromosomal rearrangement of the nuclear protein testis family member 1 (NUTM1) gene, also known as the NUT gene. NC occurs mainly in the head and neck, mediastinum and lung. In general, primary NC in the oral cavity is extremely rare and reported sporadically. METHODS: A total of 111 formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded specimens of poorly differentiated oral and oropharyngeal tumours were collected from 10 hospitals. NUT protein IHC staining was performed on these samples

Effects of chemoradiation and tongue exercise on swallow biomechanics and bolus kinematics.

BACKGROUND: Common treatments for head and neck cancer (radiation and chemotherapy) can lead to dysphagia; tongue exercise is a common intervention. This study aimed to assess swallow biomechanics and bolus kinematics using a well-established rat model of radiation or chemoradiation treatment to the tongue base, with or without tongue exercise intervention. METHODS: Pre- and post-treatment videofluoroscopy was conducted on 32 male Sprague-Dawley rats treated with radiation/chemoradiation and exercise/no exercise. Rats in the exercise groups completed a progressive resistance tongue training p

Understanding the nucleotide composition and patterns of codon usage in the expression of human oral cancer genes.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is primarily known as oral cancer (OC) that mostly occurs in mouth, lips and tongue. Mutations in some of the genes cause OC and some genes are risk factors for progression of OC. In this study, we analyzed the compositional features and pattern of codon usage in genes involved in OC using computational method as no work was reported yet. Compositional features suggested that the overall GC content was higher i.e. genes were GC rich. Effective number of codons (ENC) values ranged from 34.6 to 55.9 with a mean value of 49.03±4.22 representing low codon usage
