Numerical simulation of heat and mass transfer in vacuum far-infrared drying of rhubarb slices enhanced by multi-frequency ultrasound.

Ultrasound-enhanced drying technology is an emerging green and energy-saving technique that can effectively improve drying quality while enhancing drying efficiency. However, the enhancement mechanism of multi-frequency ultrasound in vacuum far-infrared (V-FIR) drying remains unclear. This study develops a coupled heat and mass transfer model for the multi-frequency ultrasound-enhanced vacuum far-infrared (UEV-FIR) drying of rhubarb slices to analyze the heat and mass transfer mechanisms during the drying process. Through simulation, the variations in temperature, moisture content, and other p

Self-management strategies for menstrual cycle symptoms: a systematic review.

PURPOSE: Menstrual cycle symptoms, such as discomfort, fatigue, and mood swings, are prevalent among women and can significantly diminish quality of life. Many women employ non-clinical, self-management strategies to mitigate symptoms, yet the supporting evidence for these strategies is equivocal. This systematic review sought to identify, evaluate and synthesise existing evidence from randomised controlled trials (RCTs) for non-clinical, self-management strategies for menstrual cycle symptoms. METHODS: A systematic literature search was performed in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochra

The influence of functional kinematic asymmetry on maximum speed performance in repeated sprints.

The study aimed to determine the influence of functional asymmetry on the kinematic parameters of the 50 m run and its significance in shaping maximum speed in sprinters at various sports levels. The analysis included 18 Polish sprinters (elite: ≤ 10.40 s, sub-elite: ≤ 11.10 s per 100 m) who performed four 50 m runs with 5-minute breaks. Kinematic parameters were recorded using the OptoJumpNEXT system and WittyGate photocells. The fastest and slowest run of each athlete was selected for analysis. The results showed that kinematic asymmetry has a significant impact on sprint performance. Elite

Guard cell Signal Transduction Mechanisms Controlling Stomatal Movements by Light, Abscisic Acid, CO2, VPD and Heat.

Guard cell pairs form dynamic stomatal gas exchange pores in aerial tissues of plants. Guard cells regulate CO2 influx and water loss through stomata by integrating multiple environmental and internal signals. Guard cells serve as highly specialized sensory and signal processing cells, thereby orchestrating stomatal movements in response to changing conditions. This review describes recent advances and early discoveries in elucidation of guard cell signaling networks. Present day understanding of the molecular and cellular mechanisms mediating stomatal opening by blue light, red light, heat st

Taking the brakes off cytolytic CD4+ T cells.

This study proposes a method for real-time in situ testing of the "liquid glass" vertical printing parameters based on light-curing layer-by-layer printing technology. The method involves constructing an optical monitoring system on the side of the printing box, which allows for real-time observation of the printing structure formation process. By considering the effects of oxygen inhibition, demolding force, and other factors during the actual printing process, the most precise printing parameters can be obtained. Real-time monitoring enables dynamic adjustments to ensure optimal layer-by-lay

Members of the lichen photobiont genus Trebouxia show species-specific photophysiological and transcriptome-level responses to high light.

Members of the common lichen photobiont genus Trebouxia occur from the arctic to tropical terrestrial habitats however, the mechanisms of environmental stress tolerance in Trebouxia are little understood. Here we studied six species, which belong to the S-clade and A-clade, and were isolated from the lichen-forming fungi Umbilicaria pustulata and U. phaea. These species have demonstrated extensive genomic divergence, particularly in genome regions associated with photosynthesis. Therefore, we hypothesized that they will exhibit differential performance under varying light conditions. We assess

Thermal Induced Changes in Cuticle and Cortex to Chemically Treated Hair.

The deterioration of the cuticle and cortex hair due to routine cosmetic practices has been identified as a primary factor contributing to undesirable changes in the esthetic qualities of hair. Chemical and physical treatments can cause significant damage to hair fibers. In this study, the damage induced by heating in chemically treated hair subjected to acid straightening, bleaching, and the combination of both treatments is investigated. Previous results published by our group have already clarified certain aspects of the mechanism of action of acid straightening on hair fibers. In this new

Acclimation to high and low diurnal light is flexible in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii.

Chlamydomonas acclimates to repeated low (LL) or high light (HL) days by changing the abundance of photosynthetic complexes and the ultrastructure of its thylakoid membranes. These phenotypes persist through the night phases, suggesting a readiness for the daylight environment that is routinely experienced despite the intervening dark periods [S. Dupuis et al., Plant Cell 37, koaf086 (2025), 10.1093/plcell/koaf086]. Here, we investigate how prior acclimation impacts algal fitness upon a change in daylight intensity and how quickly Chlamydomonas can reprogram its photoprotective strategy in a d

Association between psychosocial factors and adverse effects of light-to-moderate ambient heat in patients with chronic diseases: results of the prospective cohort study CLIMATE-II.

BACKGROUND: Global temperatures are increasing. Adaptation of health behavior could mitigate adverse effects of heat, but health benefits are probably limited and depend on the context. Therefore, other strategies are also needed. Our study aimed to identify adverse effects of light heat (> 27-32 °C) and moderate heat (> 32-40 °C) and to analyze whether psychosocial factors were associated with these effects. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study based on an access-restricted online survey and publicly available weather data. A total of 1810 individuals were contacted by 64 GP prac

[Skin damage caused by optical radiation beyond UV].

Along with other environmental factors, ultraviolet radiation (UV-B, UV-A) definitely plays a role in skin aging and skin cancer. Recently, it has been shown that visible light and infrared radiation are also involved in the skin aging process. Visible light in the blue-green spectral range can be absorbed by certain molecules of the skin in a similar way to UV-A, thereby generating reactive oxygen species (ROS). Light in this spectral range can trigger erythema and an increase in pigmentation, possibly also inducing the expression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) such as MMP‑1 and, thus, co

Nanoencapsulation of nutraceuticals: enhancing stability and bioavailability in functional foods.

While nutraceuticals hold great promise for improving health, their efficacy is often limited by the poor stability and low bioavailability of many bioactive compounds. Nanoencapsulation has emerged as a transformative solution to these challenges, involving nanoscale carriers that protect sensitive nutrients from degradation and enhance their absorption. This review provides a comprehensive overview of nanoencapsulation strategies in the food and nutrition domain. We outline the historical development of key nanocarrier systems, from early liposomal delivery vehicles to advanced lipid nanopar

Molecular interactions between capsicum protein and capsanthin: enhancement of complex formation and physicochemical stability by ultrasound and microwave treatments.

To investigate the mechanisms by which ultrasound (US), microwave (MW), and ultrasound-microwave combined (UM) treatments enhance the stability of capsanthin (Cap) in chili products, this study examined the effects of US, MW, and UM on Cap stability within the capsicum protein (CP)-Cap complex system. The characteristics and molecular structure of the complex (CCAP) were also analyzed. Results indicated that all treatments improved CP-Cap binding rate and CCAP stability, enhancing the resistance of Cap to light, heat, and acid-base stress, with MW showing the strongest effect. MW induced globa

Structural Stability and Thermoelectric Properties of CoSbS under High Pressure.

The structural stability of CoSbS under extremely high-pressure conditions was investigated by using in situ high-pressure X-ray diffraction. Remarkably, CoSbS demonstrates exceptional structural stability even at ∼60 GPa. Building upon these stable structural characteristics, we employed first-principles calculations and Boltzmann transport theory to analyze the electronic structure and thermoelectric properties of CoSbS under high pressure. The study reveals that pressure significantly modifies the electronic structure of CoSbS, leading to a progressive reduction in the band gap, pronounced

Enhancing photothermal therapy effectiveness via tartrazine-induced optical clearing of biological tissues.

Photothermal therapies offer a powerful strategy for noninvasive treatment of cancer and other pathological conditions by converting light energy into localized heat to ablate diseased tissues or induce local release of antigens. However, the efficacy and precision of these therapies are severely restricted by optical scattering in biological tissues, which limits light penetration and spatial accuracy in vivo. In this work, we leverage the food coloring dye tartrazine-a strongly absorbing molecule in UV-VIS range ([Formula: see text]250 nm and [Formula: see text]430 nm) and with minimal absor

Proteomic profiling of a Sporobolomyces yeast reveals global responses to UV-B-induced oxidative stress.

RESEARCH BACKGROUND: Ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation induces oxidative stress through the generation of reactive oxygen species, affecting organisms across all domains of life. While UV-stress responses have been extensively studied in the ascomycete yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae and animal systems, little is known about the molecular mechanisms underlying UV tolerance in basidiomycete, UV-resistant yeasts. Carotenoid-producing yeasts of the genus Sporobolomyces represent an attractive model to investigate whether conserved oxidative stress pathways, including bZip transcription factor signall

Photon Management in Photochemical Synthesis and Reactor Scale-Up.

ConspectusPhotochemical methods have become indispensable in modern organic synthesis by enabling unique reactivities under mild conditions through electron transfer, energy transfer, and other radical-based pathways. In contrast to thermally driven reactions, however, photochemical processes are fundamentally governed by the delivery and utilization of photons. Wavelength, light intensity, photon flux, optical path length, and reactor geometry collectively determine how efficiently photons are absorbed and translated into chemical reactivity. Importantly, increasing light intensity does not n

Effects of Arginine on Hierarchical Protein Aggregation.

Arginine is widely used in protein formulations to suppress protein aggregation and prolong the lifetime of the native, functional state which undergoes different stresses during storage, shipping and handling. However, arginine's differential effects on protein aggregation pathways remain unclear. Here, we investigated the effects of arginine on heat- and acid-induced aggregation of immunoglobulin G and heat-induced aggregation of several model proteins. Arginine suppressed the formation of insoluble aggregates but had limited impact on monomer recovery, particularly on immunoglobulin G. Inst
