Fluid Containing Structures in the tips of the fingers and toes delineated by Ultrasound Imaging before and after Induced Skin Wrinkling.

This Ultrasound study identified spaces within the pulp of distal phalanx of the fingers and toes that halve in area after Water Induced Skin Wrinkling. These spaces appeared as fluid filled sacculi between connective tissue compartments accountable for distending digital pulp under normal circumstances and skin wrinkling after water immersion. Whilst studying conditions related to sympathetic nerve function with WISW ultrasound imaging is a valuable adjunct to the visual assessment.

Ski-Everest (8848 m) Expedition: Digit Skin Temperature Responses to Cold Immersion May Reflect Susceptibility to Cold Injury.

INTRODUCTION: We tested the hypothesis that individual susceptibility to freezing cold injury might be reflected in an attenuated cold-induced vasodilatation (CIVD) response by comparing the CIVD responses of an elite alpinist with a history of freezing cold injury in the feet (case alpinist) with those of an age- and ability- matched noninjured alpinists control group (controls). According to this hypothesis, the vasomotor responses to a CIVD test of the case alpinist would represent a pathophysiological response when compared with the normal physiological response of a noninjured cohort. Virtual reality and integrated crime scene scanning for immersive and heterogeneous crime scene reconstruction.

Crime scene reconstruction plays a significant role in crime solving by helping to determine the course of events. Non-invasive, high-resolution measurement and increased insight are always the goal of forensic crime scene documentation. However, entire crime scenes cannot be effectively reconstructed with traditional methods. In this study, we present a portable system that consists of a laser scanner, two hand-held structured light scanners and a low-cost virtual reality (VR) headset with a mobile power supply to conduct multi-angle and omnidirectional three-dimensional spatial data collecti

Finger- and toe-temperature responses to local cooling and rewarming have limited predictive value identifying susceptibility to local cold injury-a cohort study in military cadets.

The purpose was to evaluate whether a cold-water immersion test could be used to identify individuals susceptible to local cold injuries (LCI). Sixty-five healthy non-injured (N-I) subjects, and fifteen subjects, who were tested either prior to or after a LCI, sequentially immersed one hand and one foot, in 8 °C water for 30 min (CWI phase); this was followed by 15 min of spontaneous rewarming (RW phase). The LCI group showed a lower toe temperature during the CWI phase, and a lower maximum RW temperature of the fingers than the N-I group. However, digit temperatures during the CWI and RW phas

Cold Susceptibility of Digit Stumps Resulting from Amputation After Freezing Cold Injury in Elite Alpinists.

UNLABELLED: Gorjanc, Jurij, Shawnda A. Morrison, Rok Blagus, and Igor B. Mekjavic. Cold susceptibility of digit stumps resulting from amputation after freezing cold injury in elite alpinists. High Alt Med Biol. 19:185-192, 2018. AIM: The aim of the study was to assess whether previous freezing cold injury in fingers and/or toes might predispose alpinists to greater risk of further freezing cold injury, primarily due to a greater vasoconstrictor response to cold, resulting in a lower perfusion, reflected in lower skin temperature. METHODS: Ten elite alpinists (N = 10; 8 male and 2 female) wit

Low Baseline Sympathetic Tone Correlates to a Greater Blood Pressure Change in the Cold Pressor Test.

BACKGROUND: The cold pressor test (CPT) involves acute hand or foot exposure to cold water. CPT hyper-responders have unique traits, including risk of hypertension and a greater vasoconstrictor reserve and g force tolerance compared to hypo-responders. The purpose of this study was to uncover differences in cardiovascular and sympathetic biomarkers between responder types. METHODS: Healthy volunteers (N = 30) submerged one hand into cold water (3.3 ± 0.8°C) for 5 min. Blood pressure, heart rate, cardiac output, and cardiac parameters were recorded using an automated monitor, impedance cardiog

Koroška 8000 Himalayan expedition: digit responses to cold stress following ascent to Broadpeak (Pakistan, 8051 m).

PURPOSE: Cold-induced vasodilatation (CIVD) is a peripheral blood flow response, observed in both the hands and feet. Exercise has been shown to enhance the response, specifically by increasing mean skin temperatures (Tsk), in part due to the increased number of CIVD waves. In contrast, hypobaric hypoxia has been suggested to impair digit skin temperature responses, particularly during subsequent hand rewarming following the cold stimulus. This study examined the combined effect of exercise and hypobaric hypoxia on the CIVD response. We compared the CIVD responses in the digits of both the han

Tool Use and Generalized Motor Programs: We All Are Natural Born Poly-Dexters.

For most people, human tool use is inextricably entwined with manual dexterity. This folk belief is widespread among scientists too. In this line, human tool use is based on motor programs about how the hand interacts with tools, implying that the use of end-effectors other than the hand should generate motor control difficulties (e.g., inability to reproduce a specific tool-use action over time), because these so-called programs characterize the spatiotemporal parameters of hand movements, but not of other end-effectors. To test this, we asked participants to perform three tool-use actions (e

Identification of complex regional pain syndrome in the upper limb: Skin temperature asymmetry after cold pressor test.

BACKGROUND: Skin temperature asymmetry (SkTA) may assist in early identification of complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), but previous work has been limited by methodological shortcomings including failure to account for the cutaneous nerve distribution where temperature is measured and reliance on laboratory equipment not clinically available. Pilot work suggested that a cold pressor test (CPT) provided a consistent thermoregulatory stress and might increase sensitivity/specificity of SkTA measurements generated reliably by handheld infrared (IR) thermometers. AIMS: This study investigated

A 10-day confinement to normobaric hypoxia impairs toe, but not finger temperature response during local cold stress.

The study examined the effects of a 10-day normobaric hypoxic confinement on the finger and toe temperature responses to local cooling. Eight male lowlanders underwent a normoxic (NC) and, in a separate occasion, a normobaric hypoxic confinement (HC; FO2: 0.154; simulated altitude ~3400m). Before and after each confinement, subjects immersed for 30min their right hand and, in a different session, their right foot in 8°C water, while breathing either room air (AIR) or a hypoxic gas mixture (HYPO). Throughout the cold-water immersion tests, thermal responses were monitored with thermocouples on

No association between hand and foot temperature responses during local cold stress and rewarming.

PURPOSE: The purpose was to examine whether associations exist between temperature responses in the fingers vs. toes and hand vs. foot during local cold-water immersion and rewarming phases. METHODS: Seventy healthy subjects (58 males, 12 females) immersed their right hand or right foot, respectively, in 8 °C water for 30 min (CWI phase), followed by a 15-min spontaneous rewarming (RW) in 25 °C air temperature. RESULTS: Temperature was lower in the toes than the fingers during the baseline phase (27.8 ± 3.0 vs. 33.9 ± 2.5 °C, p < 0.001), parts of the CWI phase (min 20-30: 8.8 ± 0.7 vs. 9.7 ±

An unusual case of an immersion hand presentation in a military signaller operating in the jungle in Belize.

Belize, hosting one of the British Army's overseas training areas, provides access to challenging terrain and austere environments, which allows the delivery of training to soldiers on survival and combat within the jungle environment. A 26-year-old infanteer on exercise in Belize presented with progressive bilateral dry, painful, oedematous hands, secondary to the harsh environmental conditions of the jungle and inadequate drying of his hands resulting in his inability to perform his combat duties. The symptoms completely resolved with drying, emollient application and analgesia. While there

Facilitatory and inhibitory pain mechanisms are altered in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome.

Preliminary evidence from studies using quantitative sensory testing suggests the presence of central mechanisms in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) as apparent by widespread hyperalgesia. Hallmarks of central mechanisms after nerve injuries include nociceptive facilitation and reduced endogenous pain inhibition. Methods to study nociceptive facilitation in CTS so far have been limited to quantitative sensory testing and the integrity of endogenous inhibition remains unexamined. The aim of this study was therefore to investigate changes in facilitatory and inhibitory processing in pa

Rapid volumetric photoacoustic tomographic imaging with a Fabry-Perot ultrasound sensor depicts peripheral arteries and microvascular vasomotor responses to thermal stimuli.

PURPOSE: To determine if a new photoacoustic imaging (PAI) system successfully depicts (1) peripheral arteries and (2) microvascular circulatory changes in response to thermal stimuli. METHODS: Following ethical permission, 8 consenting subjects underwent PAI of the dorsalis pedis (DP) artery, and 13 completed PAI of the index fingertip. Finger images were obtained after immersion in warm (30-35 °C) or cold (10-15 °C) water to promote vasodilation or vasoconstriction. The PAI instrument used a Fabry-Perot interferometeric ultrasound sensor and a 30-Hz 750-nm pulsed excitation laser. Volumetri

Validation of an automated bilateral feet cold pressor test.

The Cold Pressor Test (CPT) is often used in psychobiological research. However, the classical CPT version (unilateral hand immersion into ice-water) involves some disadvantages: hands may be needed for further applications, attentional drift towards the affected sensory hemi-field and/or physiological activation of the contralateral hemisphere may produce a laterality bias. Furthermore, instruction-induced motor activity may bias physiologic reactivity. To avoid these problems, a fully automated bilateral feet CPT was developed and tested for validity and feasibility. The test procedure is ba

The effect of different foot and hand set-up positions on backstroke start performance.

Foot and hand set-up position effects were analysed on backstroke start performance. Ten swimmers randomly completed 27 starts grouped in trials (n = 3) of each variation, changing foot (totally immersed, partially and totally emerged) and hand (lowest, highest horizontal and vertical) positioning. Fifteen cameras recorded kinematics, and four force plates collected hands and feet kinetics. Standardised mean difference and 95% confidence intervals were used. Variations with feet immersed have shown lower vertical centre of mass (CM) set-up position (0.16 m), vertical impulse exerted at the han
