[Clinical study of soaked treatment of chronic osteomyelitis with herbal medicine].

This paper represented 500 patients with chronic osteomyelitis who were treated with Chinese medicinal herbs, Gan-ling Immersion Formula, in which focuses were soaked in combination with other therapies from 1986-1989. Healing rate was 83.2%. Effective rate was 98.0%. This therapeutic method was more effective for treating chronic osteomyelitis of the hand and the foot with shorter course. It was also good for treating refractory skin ulcer and scar, ilium osteomyelitis and sclerosing osteomyelitis. This method was immediately effective for acute attack of chronic osteomyelitis. Fistula in hal

Warts in general practice.

Eight hundred and ninety seven patients referred by their general practitioner to Health Centre Wart Clinics were interviewed. Seventy one patients (7.9%) were found to have lesions other than cutaneous warts. Females were significantly more likely to have plantar warts on their toes (p less than 0.002) and non-plantar warts on their fingers (p less than 0.03) and less likely to have non-plantar warts on the palms of their hands (p less than 0.03) than males. Patients living in large households (5+ persons) were more likely than patients living in smaller households (2-4 persons) to report an

Effect of pressure on thermal insulation in humans wearing wet suits.

The present work was undertaken to determine the critical water temperature (Tcw), defined as the lowest water temperature a subject can tolerate at rest for 3 h without shivering, of wet-suited subjects during water immersion at different ambient pressures. Nine healthy males wearing neoprene wet suits (5 mm thick) were subjected to immersion to the neck in water at 1, 2, and 2.5 ATA while resting for 3 h. Continuous measurements of esophageal (T(es)) and skin (Tsk) temperatures and heat loss from the skin (Htissue) and wet suits (Hsuit) were recorded. Insulation of the tissue (Itissue), wet

Critical water temperature during water immersion at various atmospheric pressures.

The present work was undertaken to determine the effect of atmospheric pressure [ranging from a high altitude of 4,300 m above sea level or 0.6 atmospheres absolute (ATA) to depths of 10 m deep or 2 ATA] on the critical water temperature (Tcw), defined as the lowest water temperature a subject can tolerate at rest for 2 h without shivering, of the unprotected subject during water immersion. Nine healthy males wearing only shorts were subjected to immersion to the neck in water at 0.6, 1, and 2 ATA while resting for 2 h. Continuous measurements included esophageal (Tes) and skin (Tsk) temperatu

Peripheral blood flow during rewarming from mild hypothermia in humans.

During the initial stages of rewarming from hypothermia, there is a continued cooling of the core, or after-drop in temperature, that has been attributed to the return of cold blood due to peripheral vasodilatation, thus causing a further decrease of deep body temperature. To examine this possibility more carefully, subjects were immersed in cold water (17 degrees C), and then rewarmed from a mildly hypothermic state in a warm bath (40 degrees C). Measurements of hand blood flow were made by calorimetry and of forearm, calf, and foot blood flows by straingauge venous occlusion plethysmography

The role of the catecholaminergic mechanism in foot shock (FS) stress- and immobilized-water immersion (IW) stress-induced analgesia in mice.

Involvement of the catecholaminergic mechanism in foot shock (FS)- and immobilized-water immersion (IW)-stress-induced analgesia (SIA) and in the development of tolerance to the effect were investigated in mice. With daily treatment with clonidine or daily exposure to stresses, tolerance developed rapidly to the analgesic effect. Clonidine-induced analgesia, which could not be antagonized by naloxone, was potentiated in the animals rendered tolerant to FS-stress, and it was attenuated in the animals tolerant to IW-SIA. On the other hand, animals tolerant to clonidine failed to show the attenua

Restoration of thermoregulatory response to body cooling by cooling hands and feet.

Deep body temperature fell progressively by 0.5-1.4 degrees C during 3-h immersions in 29 degrees C water. Both in unacclimatized volunteers and, to a lesser degree, in divers in cold-water training, cooling the hands and feet for 1 h in 12 degrees C water during such immersion caused sensation of cold, shivering, and rise in metabolic rate; it caused body temperature to rise in unacclimatized subjects and halted its fall in divers. Tissue conductances generally fell a little in divers but rose in unacclimatized subjects, probably because of muscle blood flow associated with the greater shiver

Regional heat loss in resting man during immersion in 25.2 degrees C water.

Five male subjects having a wide range of relative body fat, 9.2-20.2%, were studied during total body immersion in water at 25.2 degrees C. The regional surface area of each subject was calculated from anthropometric data utilizing a segmental geometric model. Skin temperatures (Tsk) and regional skin heat loss were measured prior to and during 30 min immersion at 13 sites. During immersion, mean Tsk was 25.9 degrees C and remained significantly higher than the water temperature. A measurable temperature gradient for heat flow was observed from all body segments. Segimental temperature in wat

Effect of a local cold stress on peripheral temperatures of Inuit, Oriental, and Caucasian subjects.

Male subjects comprised of six Inuit from Igloolik, N.W.T., and five Orientals and six Caucasians from Toronto, Ont., volunteered for tests to determine the effect of localized cold stress on peripheral temperatures. In each subject, skin temperatures of the right index finger, the arm, and the cheek, as well as blood pressure and heart rate, were measured before, during, and after foot immersion in water of 10 degrees C temperature for 10 min. There was an immediate decrease in finger temperature on foot immersion in all three subject groups; however, the Inuit finger temperatures recovered v
