The discharge of sweat in Welsh mountain sheep.

1. Experiments were done on Welsh Mountain sheep to determine whether the sheep can be caused to discharge sweat continuously.2. On administration of sequences of four to eighteen I.V. injections of adrenaline or noradrenaline (200 mug), sheep responded to the first 4-5 injections with decreasing amounts of sweat discharge. Thereafter, the responses were fairly constant at about 10% of the first discharge. Occasionally one injection within a series elicited no sweat discharge but on other isolated occasions large discharges of sweat were induced. The blood pressure response to repeated I.V. in

A Study of the Surface Photovoltage of ZnO-Resin Layers.

The surface photovoltage of ZnO resin layer has been used as the basis for an imaging process generally known as chargeless electrophotography. This paper explores effects of the ambient air pressure and the layer temperature on the surface photovoltage of ZnO resin layers. Experiments were made by using ZnO-silicone resin layer, ZnO-alkyd resin layer, and ZnO-acryl resin layer. The surface potential of the dark adapted layers were measured while the ambient air pressure decreased, and the surface photovoltage and its decay curve were measured under various ambient air pressures. ZnO-silicone

The hydrolysis of monolayers of phosphatidyl(Me-14C)choline by phospholipase D.

1. The hydrolysis of monolayers of phosphatidyl[Me-(14)C]choline at the air/water interface by phospholipase D (phosphatidylcholine phosphatidohydrolase) was investigated by a surface-radioactivity technique by using a flow counter. 2. Phosphatidylcholine of high specific radioactivity was prepared biosynthetically in good yield from [Me-(14)C]choline by using Saccharomyces cerevisiae. 3. At initial monolayer pressures between 12 and 25 dynes/cm. the hydrolysis occurred in two stages, an initial slow hydrolysis followed by a rapid hydrolysis. Below 3dynes/cm. and above 28dynes/cm. no enzymic h

Hazards in hyperbaric medicine.

During the period April 1965 to April 1968 observations were made on 285 patients and 357 staff exposed to air and oxygen at pressures of 1 to 3 atmospheres absolute in a hyperbaric unit. Decompression sickness was not noted and an annual radiological skeletal survey failed to show aseptic bone necrosis; the incidence of otitic barotrauma was 4.7%. Oxygen toxicity was not observed in any patient. It is suggested that pressures in this range are relatively safe in a specialized medical hyperbaric environment.

Response to high pressure oxygen of conscious volunteers and patients.

A trial is described in which 19 fit volunteers and 49 patients with malignant tumors have breathed oxygen at a pressure of 3–4 atm abs for periods of from 21 to 67 min in a pressure chamber filled with oxygen. Subjects at complete rest will not safely tolerate 4 atm abs for frac12 hr but are unlikely to show signs of oxygen toxicity in a similar period at 3 atm abs. One patient convulsed during decompression after 46frac14 min at 3 atm pressure. A slow, even rate of pressurization did not prevent the occurrence of otitic barotrauma in nine of the volunteers. The patients had myringotomies per

Monolayers of Linear Saturated Succinate Polyesters at Air-Liquid Interfaces.

The surface pressure-area isotherms at 25 °C are reported for some linear saturated polyesters spread as monolayers at air-aqueous interfaces. Monolayers of poly (ethylene succinate), poly (pentamethylene succinate), and poly (neopentyl succinate) were studied on distilled water and 0.01 N hydrochloric acid subphases. Poly (ethylene succinate) monolayers are in the expanded state and collapse at low surface pressures. Poly (pentamethylene succinate) monolayers are also expanded, but show no definite collapse, even at the highest surface pressures studied. Monolayers of poly (neopentyl succinat

A comparison of the "high-altitude" and "high-pressure" syndromes of decompression sickness.

Decompression sickness is an illness which occurs in divers and caisson workers on return to normal atmospheric pressure after working at very high pressures, and in aiRMEN on reaching very low pressures at great altitude. The disease seen after exposure to high pressure is described and compared with that seen on exposure to great altitude. Mild cases show little difference, but serious ones vary sufficiently to justify division of the disease into two distinct syndromes, high-pressure and high-altitude decompression sickness. Both syndromes are caused by the formation of gas bubbles in the b
