Riga-Fede disease: A systematic review and report of two cases.

AIM: The term Riga-Fede disease has been used historically to describe traumatic ulceration that occurs on the ventral surface of tongue, buccal mucosa, gum or floor of the tongue in newborns and infants. It is most often associated with natal and neonatal teeth in newborns. The painful symptoms may be absent or acute, up to the point of preventing the baby from feeding. The aim of this work is to offer a description of the therapeutic solutions for the treatment of this pathological condition, with a review of the literature and the report of two cases. MATERIALS: A systematic review of the

Tongue ulcer in a patient with COVID-19: a case presentation.

BACKGROUND: The emergence of COVID-19 has devastated many parts of the world. From asymptomatic to symptomatic, the virus causes a wide spectrum of presentations. COVID-19 patients may present with oral manifestations. In Afghanistan, where COVID-19 has severely strained the health care system, much of the population lacks proper oral hygiene. This makes the oral cavity a perfect site for SARS-CoV-2 to manifest clinical signs. CASE PRESENTATION: A 62-year-old male was evaluated in the Dentistry Teaching Clinic of Kabul University of Medical Sciences for a painful erosive lesion on dorsal surf

Head and Neck Mesenchymal Neoplasms With GLI1 Gene Alterations: A Pathologic Entity With Distinct Histologic Features and Potential for Distant Metastasis.

Soft tissue tumors with GLI1 gene fusions or amplifications have been recently described as a unique pathologic entity with an established risk of malignancy. We herein expand these findings by investigating a cohort of 11 head and neck lesions with GLI1 alterations, including 8 from the tongue, for their clinicopathologic and molecular features. The tumors commonly affected males in their 30s (male:female ratio 2.7:1; range: 1 to 65). Tumors showed a multinodular growth pattern, nested architecture separated by a delicate, arborizing vascular network, monotonous round to ovoid nuclei, and cle

The effect of designing a rotational planning target volume on sparing pharyngeal constrictor muscles in patients with oropharyngeal cancer.

BACKGROUND: Planning target volume (PTV) has been used to account for variations in tissue, patient and beam position. In oropharyngeal cancers, an isotropic expanded PTV has been used. AIM: The aim of this study was to design a new margin formula that would cover the space occupied by an oropharyngeal clinical target volume (CTV) with ±5-degree rotation around the spine in order to reduce the pharyngeal constrictors overlap with PTV compared to an isotropic expanded PTV. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 20 volumetric-modulated arc therapy (VMAT) plans. In order to perform an off-axis r

Genomic landscape and clonal architecture of mouse oral squamous cell carcinomas dictate tumour ecology.

To establish whether 4-nitroquinoline N-oxide-induced carcinogenesis mirrors the heterogeneity of human oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), we have performed genomic analysis of mouse tongue lesions. The mutational signatures of human and mouse OSCC overlap extensively. Mutational burden is higher in moderate dysplasias and invasive SCCs than in hyperplasias and mild dysplasias, although mutations in p53, Notch1 and Fat1 occur in early lesions. Laminin-α3 mutations are associated with tumour invasiveness and Notch1 mutant tumours have an increased immune infiltrate. Computational modelling of

An ectomesenchymal chondromyxoid tumour on the lateral border of the tongue.

Ectomesenchymal chondromyxoid tumour (ECT) is an extremely rare intraoral mesenchymal tumour. Most of these tumours have been identified on the anterior aspect of the dorsal surface of the tongue. ECT is difficult to diagnose because of its rarity. We report a case of ECT arising on the lateral border of the tongue in a 67-year-old woman. The tumour, measuring 20 × 10 mm in size, was surgically removed. Histopathologically, the tumour was composed of small polygonal cells arranged in sheets, with a myxoid or hyalinized stroma. The tumour boundary was clear; however, the tumour showed a multino

Use of the transoral robotic surgery to treat patients with recurrent lingual tonsillitis.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluates the efficacy of lingual tonsil resection by transoral robotic surgery (TORS) in a large group of patients with recurrent lingual tonsillitis (RLT). METHODS: Eighty-four patients with RLT treated with a lingual tonsil surgical resection using TORS were analyzed in terms of their postoperative results, disease recurrence, postoperative dysphagia, and quality of life. RESULTS: A reduction of the mean number/year of acute lingual tonsillitis (LT) episodes emerged after surgery (5.17 vs 0.54 events), comparing the mean number of preoperative and postoperative LT e

Sleep disordered breathing in children with trisomy 13 and trisomy 18.

PURPOSE: While the prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is well documented in trisomy 21, there has been little published about the incidence in trisomy 13 (T13) and trisomy 18 (T18). Trisomies 13, 18, and 21 have overlapping clinical features that make patients prone to OSA. Because the literature regarding OSA in T13 and T18 children is limited, we performed a retrospective chart review to investigate the characteristics of these patients. METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of children with T13 or T18 seen at seen at a single urban tertiary children's hospital for sleep disorde

Unilateral enlargement of the lateral lingual tonsil: An immunohistochemical study and literature review.

Besides the Waldeyer's ring, other lymphoid aggregates can also be detected in the soft palate, floor of the mouth and ventral tongue. The lingual tonsil is located at the base of the tongue and related to circumvallate papillae, whereas subepithelial lymphoid tissue at the posterior lateral portion of the tongue and related to foliate papillae constitutes the lateral lingual tonsil. Unilateral tonsillar enlargement is critical, because it can suggest malignancy, notably non-Hodgkin lymphoma or squamous cell carcinoma. Herein, we report an unusual presentation of unilateral enlargement of the

An Uncommon Case of Partial Airway Obstruction due to Lingual Tonsillar Hypertrophy.

Obstruction of the airway is a medical emergency. If it is not treated immediately, rapid and potentially life-threatening hypoxia develops. A 70-year-old woman with a history of hypertension and palatine tonsillectomy presented to our tertiary care hospital with dysphagia, odynophagia, muffled voice, and neck swelling of a one-week duration. She also complained of associated shortness of breath that began two days prior to hospital admittance. Bedside laryngoscopy revealed an enlarged base of the tongue and laryngeal edema, resulting in partial airway obstruction. A CT scan of the soft tissue

Improved cancer detection in Waldeyer's tonsillar ring by 68Ga-FAPI PET/CT imaging.

PURPOSE: In cancer of unknown primary (CUP), positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) with the glucose analog [18F]FDG represents the standard imaging approach for localization of the malignant primary. Frequently, however, [18F]FDG PET/CT cannot precisely distinguish between small occult tumors and chronic inflammation, especially in Waldeyer's tonsillar ring. To improve the accuracy for detecting primary tumors in the Waldeyer's tonsillar ring, the novel PET tracer [68Ga]Ga-FAPI-4 for specific imaging of fibroblast activation protein (FAP) expression was used as a more speci

Oropharyngeal carcinoma: A single institution study of 338 primaries with special reference to high-risk human papillomavirus-mediated carcinoma with aggressive behavior.

In a retrospective review, we identified 332 patients with 338 pathologically diagnosed primary oropharyngeal carcinomas (OPC) between January 2013 and March 2020 with known p16/HPV status from a tumor registry at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The tumors predominantly involved the palatine tonsil (51 %) and the base of the tongue/lingual tonsil (38 %). The most common type of cancer was non-keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma (60 %), and the majority of primaries were p16 positive/HPV-mediated (86 %). A cohort of p16 positive/HPV mediated OPC (27/283, 9.5 %) presented with aggressive clinic

Oral Verruciform Xanthoma: A Series of 212 Cases and Review of the Literature.

Verruciform xanthoma (VX) of the oral cavity is an uncommon, reactive lesion of unknown etiology. In this study, we present a large series of VX with analysis of demographics, clinical appearance, histologic presentation and extensive review of literature. To the best of our knowledge, this is the largest series of oral VX reported to date. Following IRB approval, all cases diagnosed as VX found in the archives of the University of Florida Oral Pathology Biopsy Service (1994-2018) were included. Patient age, gender, location, clinical appearance, clinical impression, and duration of each lesio

Minimal Invasive Approach for Management of Lingual Swelling on Ventral Surface of Tongue.

Pediatric dentistry is a speciality of dentistry focusing mainly on oral health care of children. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment is key of a good treatment plan and effective results. Sometimes in infants, it is not possible to make a confirmatory diagnosis due to lack of cooperation, which is the biggest challenge of kids dentistry. In such cases, we need to take into consideration the psychological and physiologic aspect of child to find an alternative treatment plan, which is time saving and painless. Here, we present a unique case management of lingual swelling on the ventral surface

Lingual Linear Lesions: A Clinical Sign Strongly Suggestive of Severe Vitamin B12 Deficiency.

BACKGROUND: Lingual linear lesions (LLLs) are the oral linear lesions located on the dorsum, lateral borders, and/or ventral surface of tongue. It has been suggested that LLLs might be an early clinical sign of vitamin B12 deficiency. Here, a retrospective study was conducted to further investigate and validate the association between LLL and vitamin B12 deficiency. METHODS: Based on the clinical examination, patients with LLLs were enrolled and analyzed retrospectively. Data regarding clinical and laboratory features were obtained. Follow-up was done at least 6 months following appropriate s
