For certain metal arc-welding and other metal processing operations, compounds of barium are used as flux components. Airborne fumes generated by welding with electrodes using barium fluoride or carbonate fluxes may contain 15-30% of barium in readily water-soluble form (Dare et al. 1984). Urine of welders inhaling such fumes was shown to contain elevated levels of barium ions (up to 234 micrograms/l). To assess the possible hazards of such exposure, the toxic potencies of fume samples, expressed in terms of their water-soluble barium ion contents, were compared with effects of solutions of ba

Lipid bilayers and monolayers composed of dimyristoylphosphatidic acid (DMPA) and cholesterol were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry and film balance measurements. Increasing cholesterol content decreases the bilayer phase transition temperature and enthalpy in a manner similar to that observed before for other lipid/cholesterol systems. In monomolecular films at the air-water interface cholesterol exhibits the well known condensing effect in the liquid-expanded phase, while the liquid-condensed phase is less affected. As with the bilayer phase transition, the transition tempe

In an observer-blind, randomised cross-over trial, in 12 patients, the effects on the peripheral circulation of antihypertensive doses of atenolol, labetalol and propranolol and placebo were compared. After a placebo period of at least 4 weeks, patients were allocated at random to one of the three active drug treatments. After active treatment for at least 6 weeks and a fall in diastolic pressure (DP) to less than 90 mmHg subjects were switched to the next medication. At the end of each period, photo-electric plethysmography (PHELP) was done on all fingers of one hand cooled over 4 min in wate

If cold temperature combines with ambient water pressure to stimulate the Henry-Gauer reflex in humans, then free water clearance (CH2O) should be greater during immersion in cold water (29.8 degrees C) than during exposure to cold air (14.8 degrees C) or immersion in thermoneutral water (35 degrees C). Urinary responses to these environments were compared with control measurements made during 6 h of sitting in thermoneutral air (27.6 degrees C). CH2O was not significantly greater in cold water than in the other environments. Rather, the diuretic response was characterized by an increased osmo

Exposure of divers to intense noise in water is increasing, yet no general hearing-conservation standard for such exposures exists. This paper summarizes three theories of underwater hearing, the tympanic, bone-conduction, and dual path theories, and reviews empirical data in order to identify some requirements such a standard must meet. Among problems considered are hearing sensitivity in water, the frequency and dynamic ranges of the water-immersed ear, and non-auditory effects of underwater sound. It was concluded that no well-developed theoretical basis exists for extrapolating current hea

Intracellular pressure responses were recorded from squid giant axons after the axoplasm was removed by the intracellular perfusion technique. A glass tube was inserted into the axon and the movement of the air-water interface formed on the end of the tube was observed with a Y-shaped fibrescope. The intracellular pressure increased and decreased rapidly when an action potential was induced by electrical stimulation. The amplitude of the response was about 10 mPa (or 1 X 10(-3) mmH2O), which was very large in comparison with that observed in unperfused axons. It was sensitive to extracellular

Surface pressure studies of phospholipid monomolecular films of dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) and dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) formed at an air/water interface have been made and the effects on the films studied when various carbohydrates are present in the subphase. The results obtained show that at a given temperature, the area per molecule of DPPC increases with increasing concentration of the carbohydrate in the subphase. The carbohydrate which has the greatest expanding effect on the phospholipid monolayer is glycerol, followed in turn by trehalose, sucrose, glucose, raff

Gangliosides are neuraminic acid-containing glycolipids preferently localized in nervous membranes and showing physicochemical peculiarities, e.g., drastically changing amphiphilic properties by Ca2+ binding. On account of this they are favorite compounds to act as modulators of membraneous organization and functions during synaptic transmission. Lipid monolayers are suitable experimental systems for the study of the surface behavior of amphipatic molecules and therefore are useful to interpret membraneous organization. The surface pressure/area isotherms of monolayers of different individual

The diurnal course of water potential, stomatal conductance and transpiration was measured on mature umbels (the major evaporating surface) of papyrus (Cyperus papyrus L.) growing in a fringing swamp on Lake Naivasha, Kenya.Umbel water potential declined only slightly during the morning but fell rapidly after midday to a minimum value of-1.5 M Pa in early afternoon. The two main structures forming the umbels, the bracteoles and rays, showed similar patterns of change of stomatal conductance throughout the day. The values of conductance indicate major stomatal opening during the morning, partia

Ingestion of sodium bicarbonate has been implicated as one of the proximate causes of spontaneous gastric rupture. However, the volume and rate of gas released from the reaction of ingested sodium bicarbonate and gastric acid has not been previously studied in detail. We, therefore, developed an in vitro method for measuring gas release after addition of sodium bicarbonate to a solution containing hydrochloric acid. From the results of our studies, we conclude that even though hydrochloric acid and sodium bicarbonate react instantaneously, the resulting gas production is slow, mainly because C

Daily resting and exercise electrocardiograms from 81 healthy subjects taking part in eight different air saturation chamber experiments at depths of 2-132 ft sea water gauge (fswg) were recorded and interpreted. Scalar and planar characteristics were measured and analyzed in addition to noting changes in rhythm. Of the measured variables, only the heart rate and QT-interval changed significantly in the majority of exposures. Heart rate decrements of 14%-23% were observed, generally with normalization after several days at depth, and in some cases a rebound immediately postexposure. The observ

A term of 'disproportionately large, communicating fourth ventricle' (DLCFV) was first proposed by in Harwood-Nash in 1980. It is somewhat different from the well known clinical entity of 'isolated or trapped fourth ventricle', because of apparent patency of aqueductal canal. Two cases of typical DLCFV encountered in our clinic were described. First patient was a 24 year old man in whom this condition developed following operations for lumber disc and second patient was 22 year old woman in whom the disease developed after subarachnoid hemorrhage. In both cases, main symptoms were attributable

The Fleisch pneumotachometer (PTM) gives the instantaneous respiratory gas flow, and when integrated provides the volume of gas displaced. Its output signal is proportional to the product of the flow and the viscosity of the gas. The calibration factor is thus different for inspiration and expiration. Since the exact value of the viscosity is unknown, accurate figures for flow cannot be obtained. This study examines the use of a precisely sinusoidal pump with adjustable speed and capacity, displacing air in a thermostatically controlled chamber containing water at 37 degrees C stirred by a pro

A method is described that eliminates surface flow in monolayers at the air-water interface and makes possible diffusion measurements by fluorescence microphotolysis ("photobleaching"). In contrast to previous studies that did not account for surface flow, lipid probe diffusion has been found to be similar in densely packed monolayers and in related bilayers. Furthermore, it seems that lipid diffusion is based on the same molecular mechanism in monolayers, bilayers, and potentially also cell membranes. In monolayers of L-alpha-dilauroylphosphatidylcholine (Lau2-PtdCho) the translational diffus

Diffusion of a particular gas in a mixture of three or more gases depends on diffusion characteristics and concentrations of the other gases and also on environmental pressure. 1) Estimates of gas-phase diffusivities in hyperbaric environments can be calculated from binary coefficients by the Wilke equation. Sample calculations show that addition of carbon dioxide and water to inspired gas has very little effect on diffusivity of oxygen but that neglect of lesser components of a mixture, such as the nitrogen in "trimix" or the helium in crude neon, would lead to errors of 10% to 20%. 2) It is

The effects of lateral tension on the properties of membranes are often explained in comparison with analogous experiments on monolayers, which yield more detailed data. To calculate the effects of changes in tension on the composition of, or incorporation of amphiphiles into membranes we examine (i) the fidelity of the monolayer analogy, (ii) the range of possible tensions in a membrane, and the way in which tensions arise and (iii) the equilibrium partitioning of amphiphiles between aqueous solution and a bilayer under tension. We argue that, at the same areas per molecule, a monolayer at an

Infusion of Escherichia coli endotoxin (0.12-1.5 micrograms/kg) into unanesthetized sheep causes transient pulmonary hypertension and several hours of increased lung vascular permeability, after which sheep recover. To produce enough lung injury to result in pulmonary edema with respiratory failure, we infused larger doses of E. coli endotoxin (2.0-5.0 micrograms/kg) into 11 chronically instrumented unanesthetized sheep and continuously measured pulmonary arterial, left atrial and aortic pressures, dynamic lung compliance, lung resistance, and lung lymph flow. We intermittently measured arteri

In 1978 a series of deep trimix (He-N2-O2) dives was initiated to establish the relationship between a given nitrogen percentage and the rate of compression required to prevent the high pressure nervous syndrome (HPNS) at 460 m (1509 ft) and to determine the effects of inspired gas density, hydrostatic pressure, and narcosis o various circulatory and respiratory parameter, including the presence of dyspnea. In 1979, three human subjects were compressed to 460 m in 12 h 20 min with 5% N2 in He-O2. This resulted in nausea, vomiting, fatigue, tremors, and other signs and symptoms of HPNS that wer

Conductance for water vapor, assimilation of CO(2), and intercellular CO(2) concentration of leaves of five species were determined at various irradiances and ambient CO(2) concentrations. Conductance and assimilation were then plotted as functions of irradiance and intercellular CO(2) concentration. The slopes of these curves allowed us to estimate infinitesimal changes in conductance (and assimilation) that occurred when irradiance changed and intercellular CO(2) concentration was constant, and when CO(2) concentration changed and irradiance was constant. On leaves of Xanthium strumarium L.,
