Femicides and Victim's age-Associated Factors in Peru.

Background. Femicides are an increasing social problem worldwide. In this study, we aim to describe the trend of femicides in the prepandemic decade and characterize the femicide victims and their perpetrators. Methods. We assessed the trend of femicides in Peru during 2010-2019 and performed a cross-sectional study to analyze the femicides reported in 2019 using open data. Results. We analyzed 166 femicides reported in 24/25 regions of Peru in 2019 and calculated a yearly incidence of 1.01 femicides per 100,000 women. This incidence level represents an increase of 38% compared to the mean ann

Anti-Strychnine Immunoconjugate Reduces the Effects of Strychnine-Induced Toxicity in Mice.

Strychnine poisoning induces seizures that result in loss of control of airway muscles, leading to asphyxiation and subsequent death. Current treatment options are limited, requiring hands-on medical care and isolation to low-stimulus environments. Anticonvulsants and muscle relaxants have shown limited success in cases of severe toxicity. Furthermore, nonfatal strychnine poisoning is likely to result in long-term muscular and cognitive damage. Due to its potency, accessibility, and lack of effective antidotes, strychnine poses a unique threat for mass casualty incidents. As a first step towar

Physiological Effects of a Spit Restraint Device Saturated With Artificial Saliva.

BACKGROUND: Spit restraint devices, also referred to as spit hoods, spit masks, or spit socks, are used by law enforcement and medical personnel to minimize transmission of communicable disease from bodily fluids from agitated individuals. Several lawsuits have implicated spit restraint devices as contributing to the death of individuals who are physically restrained by means of asphyxiation due to saturation of the mesh restraint device with saliva. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to evaluate whether a saturated spit restraint device has any clinically significant effects on the ventilatory or c

Cord management in non-vigorous newborns.

Cord management in non-vigorous newborns remains up for debate, as limited studies have validated strategies in this high-risk population. While multiple national and international governing bodies now recommend the routine practice of delayed cord clamping (DCC) in vigorous neonates, these organizations have not reached a consensus on the appropriate approach in non-vigorous neonates. Benefits of placental transfusion are greatly needed amongst non-vigorous neonates who are at risk of asphyxiation-associated mortality and morbidities, but the need for immediate resuscitation complicates matte

Analysis of Anxiety or Depression and Long-term Mortality Among Survivors of Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest.

IMPORTANCE: The recent American Heart Association guidelines added a sixth link in the chain of survival highlighting recovery and emphasized the importance of psychiatric outcome and recovery for survivors of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). The prevalence of psychiatric disorders among this population was higher than that in the general population. OBJECTIVE: To examine the prevalence of depression or anxiety and the association of these conditions with long-term mortality among individuals who survive OHCA. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A longitudinal population-based cohort st

Heads or tails first? Evolution of fetal orientation in ichthyosaurs, with a scrutiny of the prevailing hypothesis.

According to a longstanding paradigm, aquatic amniotes, including the Mesozoic marine reptile group Ichthyopterygia, give birth tail-first because head-first birth leads to increased asphyxiation risk of the fetus in the aquatic environment. Here, we draw upon published and original evidence to test two hypotheses: (1) Ichthyosaurs inherited viviparity from a terrestrial ancestor. (2) Asphyxiation risk is the main reason aquatic amniotes give birth tail-first. From the fossil evidence, we conclude that head-first birth is more prevalent in Ichthyopterygia than previously recognized and that a

Medical line entanglement: The unspoken patient safety hazard of medical devices.

BACKGROUND: In February 2022, the US Food and Drug Administration published a safety communication regarding the risk of strangulation from enteral feeding delivery sets. When it comes to the causes of accidental strangulation or asphyxiation, it is common knowledge that household items, such as window blind cords, are potential hazards. However, many people may not expect that medical devices may pose similar risks because of medical line entanglement (MLE). METHODS: A survey of clinicians from pediatric acute care and outpatient facilities and caregivers of patients with medical lines was c

[Clinical application of flexible bronchoscopy in the treatment of airway foreign body].

Airway foreign body is the unintentional entry of objects into the larynx, trachea, or bronchi, causing airway obstruction, severe coughing, wheezing, breathing difficulties, or even asphyxiation. It is a common emergency condition in respiratory, critical care, emergency, otolaryngology, and pediatric departments, etc. With the popularization of flexible bronchoscopic techniques, endoscopic foreign body removal has been widely used in adults and children. The combined application of various instruments, such as alligator forceps, mesh baskets, balloons, and cryoprobes could safely and effecti

Comparative Effectiveness of an Artificial Air Pocket Device to Delay Asphyxiation in Supine Individuals Critically Buried in Avalanche Debris.

IMPORTANCE: Approximately 70% of individuals critically buried in avalanche debris die within 35 minutes as a result of asphyxial cardiac arrest. An artificial air-pocket device (AAPD) that separates inhaled air from exhaled air may delay the onset of severe hypoxemia and eventual asphyxia during snow burial. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the efficacy of a new AAPD during snow burial in a supine position. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This comparative effectiveness trial was performed in winter 2016 with data analysis in November 2016 and November 2022. Each trial used a simulated critical

Comparison of standardized ileal digestibility of amino acids in faba beans and field peas in broiler chickens and pigs.

An experiment, using the same set of five diets was conducted to determine and compare the standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of amino acids (AA) in faba beans and three cultivars of field peas in broiler chickens and pigs. Four test diets were prepared to contain faba beans, DS-Admiral field peas, Hampton field peas, or 4010 field peas as the sole source of nitrogen. A nitrogen-free diet (NFD), as the fifth diet, was prepared to estimate the basal endogenous losses of AA to determine the SID of AA in the test ingredients. A total of 416 male broiler chickens with an initial body weight (B

Delayed respiratory distress after thyroidectomy-another challenge for us: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Delayed airway obstruction and the resulting severe dyspnea with acute distress are rare but life-threatening postoperative thyroidectomy complications. Unfortunately, if not adequately attended to on time, they could cost a patient's life. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 47-year-old female patient who underwent thyroidectomy was left at the end of surgery with a tracheostomy, because of tracheomalacia and recurrent laryngeal nerve injury. Within the next ten days, her health condition gradually worsened. She complained of unexpected symptoms of shortness of breath, airway compromize and neck

EXTRACORPOREAL CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION WITH THERAPEUTIC HYPOTHERMIA MITIGATES KIDNEY INJURY AFTER CARDIAC ARREST IN RATS.

Many patients with cardiac arrest (CA) experience severe kidney injury after the return of spontaneous circulation. This study aimed to compare the renal protective effect of conventional cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CCPR), extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR), and ECPR with therapeutic hypothermia (ECPR+T) in a CA rat model. Twenty-four adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly and equally allocated into the sham, CCPR, ECPR, and ECPR+T groups. The sham group underwent basic surgical procedures without asphyxia-induced CA. The other three groups were treated with asphyxiat

Effects on oral tissues of asphyxiation caused by cervical compression: The pink teeth phenomenon in Kato's studies (1941).

The effects on oral tissues of asphyxiation caused by cervical compression were investigated in 203 rabbits by Kiyotoshi Kato, who published four papers in classical Japanese in Kokubyo Gakkai Zasshi (now The Journal of the Stomatological Society, Japan) in 1941. The aim of this review is to summarize and disseminate the enormous amount of experimental data (reprint permission in English has been obtained from the journal). Based on the experimental models of hanging, strangulation with an external force equal to body weight, and strangulation with an external force equal to 1/10th body weight

Stunning methods before slaughter induce oxidation changes of large yellow croaker during cold storage: the role of mitochondria and underlying mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: Improper stunning methods before slaughter could cause fish to deteriorate more quickly during cold storage. However, it is unclear how stunning methods affect the mitochondrial structure and the role of mitochondria in oxidation in muscle-based food. RESULTS: This study explored the potential mechanism of oxidation induced by different stunning methods (hit on the head, T1 ; gill cut, T2 ; immersion in ice/water slurry, T3 ; CO2 asphyxiated, T4 ; 40% CO2  + 30% N2  + 30% O2 , T5 ) in large yellow croaker during cold storage. The results showed that T4 samples had the minimum stre

Structural brain morphology in young adult women who have been choked/strangled during sex: A whole-brain surface morphometry study.

INTRODUCTION: Being choked/strangled during partnered sex is an emerging sexual behavior, particularly prevalent among young adult women. Using a multiparameter morphometric imaging approach, we aimed to characterize neuroanatomical differences between young adult women (18-30 years old) who were exposed to frequent sexual choking and their choking naïve controls. METHODS: This cross-sectional study consisted of two groups (choking [≥4 times in the past 30 days] vs. choking-naïve group). Participants who reported being choked four or more times during sex in the past 30 days were enrolled in

Asphyxiation of Metarhizium robertsii during mycelial growth produces conidia with increased stress tolerance via increased expression of stress-related genes.

Little is known about the impact of hypoxia and anoxia during mycelial growth on tolerance to different stress conditions of developing fungal conidia. Conidia of the insect-pathogenic fungus Metarhizium robertsii were produced on potato dextrose agar (PDA) medium under normoxia (control = normal oxygen concentrations), continuous hypoxia, and transient anoxia, as well as minimal medium under normoxia. The tolerance of the conidia produced under these different conditions was evaluated in relation to wet heat (heat stress), menadione (oxidative stress), potassium chloride (osmotic stress), UV

Manual and instrument asphyxiation/strangulation: Examining perpetrator and victim characteristics.

Asphyxiation and strangulation are predominant murder methods, with ligature and hands being common weapons in such attacks. This study examines a broad sample with the goal of establishing statistical significance between manual and instrument asphyxiation/strangulation and both victim and offender characteristics. Two hundred cases of perpetrators who strangled or asphyxiated at least one victim on or after 1970 were randomly selected from the Radford-FGCU Serial Killer Database. Descriptive analysis and association tests were performed for characteristics of the perpetrators, victims and cr
