Domain-specific effects of hunger on attention and choice.

Hunger leads to less healthy food choices, but its effect on decision-making in non-food domains is less clear. To close this gap, we investigated to what extent hunger state affected choice across domains by examining attentional patterns and cognitive mechanisms underlying decision-making across different domains. We implemented a within-subject design in which participants completed a food choice, an intertemporal discounting, and a social preferences task in hungry and sated states while their eye-movements were recorded. Hungry participants were more likely to look at and subsequently sel

Effects of feeding on dogs' frustration-related behaviours during a laboratory-based scent detection task.

Dogs often use their keen olfactory abilities in laboratory settings to support scent detection research. In cognitively demanding tasks, pre-feeding appears to influence engagement and performance, but the effects of hunger state on dogs' frustration-related behaviour during scent-detection work has not previously been examined. We analysed overall behaviour patterns observed during a laboratory-based scent detection task and evaluated whether dogs exhibited frustration-related behaviour changes as a function of having had breakfast before the task. We expected to see an increase in frustrati

Perceptual differences in olfactory fat discrimination are not detected in neural activation.

Olfaction is involved in detecting, identifying, and discriminating dietary fat within foods, yet the underlying neural mechanisms remain uncharted. Our functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study investigated the neural correlates of olfactory fat perception and their association with discrimination ability in a complex food matrix. We measured brain activation resulting from orthonasal exposure to an ecologically relevant fat-related odor source-dairy milk, manipulated to contain 0%, 3.5%, or 14% fat. Twenty-six healthy, normosmic adults underwent olfactory fat content discrimination

The hazards of skipping meals and losing sleep for ride-hailing drivers-evidence based on quasi-experimental and experience sampling methodology.

The rapid growth of ride-hailing services, driven by big data and platform algorithms, has intensified physiological stressors among drivers, particularly during peak mealtime periods, where hunger and sleep deprivation ("skipping meals and losing sleep") have become prevalent occupational hazards. While prior research has separately documented the adverse effects of hunger and sleep loss on self-control, their synergistic impact on driving safety remains underexplored, especially in ecologically valid settings. Guided by the self-control strength model, this study investigated how hunger and

Development of an assessment method for freely moving nonhuman primates' eating behavior using manual and deep learning analysis.

PURPOSE: Although eating is imperative for survival, few comprehensive methods have been developed to assess freely moving nonhuman primates' eating behavior. In the current study, we distinguished eating behavior into appetitive and consummatory phases and developed nine indices to study them using manual and deep learning-based (DeepLabCut) techniques. METHOD: The indices were utilized to three rhesus macaques by different palatability and hunger levels to validate their utility. To execute the experiment, we designed the eating behavior cage and manufactured the artificial food. The total

Effects of hunger and calorie content on visual awareness of food stimuli.

Calorie content and hunger are two fundamental cues acting upon the processing of visually presented food items. However, whether and to which extent they affect visual awareness is still an open question. Here, high- and low-calorie food images administered to hungry or satiated participants were confronted in a breaking-Continuous Flash Suppression paradigm (Experiment 1), measuring the time required to access to visual awareness, and in a Binocular Rivalry paradigm (Experiment 2), quantifying the dominance time in visual awareness. Experiment 1 showed that high-calorie food accessed faster

Chronic water restriction reduces sensitivity to brain stimulation reward in male and female rats.

States of physiological need motivate individuals to seek and consume stimuli that restore homeostatic balance. This goal-directed behavior is driven, in part, by pathways that process reward and are sensitive to changes in physiological state, including the mesolimbic dopamine system. The effects of hunger and its physiological markers have been more widely studied for their role in modulating reward signaling pathways. However, fluid need produces robust goal-directed behavior and has also been shown to affect neural substrates of reward processing. To test how acute and chronic states of th

Gambling on an empty stomach: Hunger modulates preferences for learned but not described risks.

INTRODUCTION: We assess risks differently when they are explicitly described, compared to when we learn directly from experience, suggesting dissociable decision-making systems. Our needs, such as hunger, could globally affect our risk preferences, but do they affect described and learned risks equally? On one hand, decision-making from descriptions is often considered flexible and context sensitive, and might therefore be modulated by metabolic needs. On the other hand, preferences learned through reinforcement might be more strongly coupled to biological drives. METHOD: Thirty-two healthy p

Effects of hunger on neuronal histone modifications slow aging in Drosophila.

Hunger is an ancient drive, yet the molecular nature of pressures of this sort and how they modulate physiology are unknown. We find that hunger modulates aging in Drosophila. Limitation of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) or activation of hunger-promoting neurons induced a hunger state that extended life span despite increased feeding. Alteration of the neuronal histone acetylome was associated with BCAA limitation, and preventing these alterations abrogated the effect of BCAA limitation to increase feeding and extend life span. Hunger acutely increased feeding through usage of the histone

Anti-inflammatory effects of hunger are transmitted to the periphery via projection-specific AgRP circuits.

Caloric restriction has anti-inflammatory effects. However, the coordinated physiological actions that lead to reduced inflammation in a state of caloric deficit (hunger) are largely unknown. Using a mouse model of injury-induced peripheral inflammation, we find that food deprivation reduces edema, temperature, and cytokine responses that occur after injury. The magnitude of the anti-inflammatory effect that occurs during hunger is more robust than that of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. The effects of hunger are recapitulated centrally by activity in nutrient-sensing hypothalamic agout

Factors affecting yawning frequencies in preterm neonates.

Yawning is a long neglected behavioral pattern, but it has recently gained an increasing interdisciplinary attention for its theoretical implications as well as for its potential use as a clinical marker, with particular regard to perinatal neurobehavioral assessment. The present study investigated the factors affecting yawning frequencies in hospitalized preterm neonates (N = 58), in order to distinguish the effects of hunger and sleep-related modulations and to examine the possible impact of demographic and clinical variables on yawning frequencies. Results showed that preterm neonates yawne

Food insecurity, hunger, stress, and homelessness among young adults.

BACKGROUND: Compared to the effects of stress on hunger, the temporal effect of hunger on stress levels is less understood, especially in the context of everyday lives of vulnerable populations with unstable access to food. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to examine the effects of food insecurity and momentary hunger on momentary stress and stress variability in a sample of currently and formerly homeless young adults. METHOD: We used a 7-day ecological momentary assessment study querying affect, hunger, and risky behaviors. A mixed-effects location scale model was used to examine the effects o

Ophthalmology research in the Warsaw Jewish ghetto-hunger disease and the story of Szymon Fajgenblat, MD.

PURPOSE: During World War II, scientific studies were conducted in the Jewish ghetto of Warsaw (Poland). This research, focusing on hunger-induced disease, was embedded in circumstances of omnipresent hunger and starvation. Ophthalmologist Szymon Fajgenblat (1900-1944) was one of the involved physicians and wrote a manuscript about ophthalmological changes during starvation. The background and the findings of his research are discussed in this article. METHODS: Literature and archival research. RESULTS: The Warsaw ghetto existed from 1941 to 1943 until it was destroyed, just like most of its

Differential effects of hunger on cerebral blood flow in healthy adolescents.

Adolescence represents a key developmental period in terms of both mood and overweight and is linked to disturbed eating behavior. Therefore, it is essential to investigate the basis of food intake in healthy adolescents by considering mood impacts which remain largely unexplored. Hence this study aims to investigate the impact of hunger and mood on cerebral blood flow (CBF) changes in healthy adolescents. Fifteen participants underwent two MRI sessions including a 3D pseudo-continuous arterial spin labeling sequence: pre-lunch (hunger) and post-lunch (satiety). Mood was assessed using the Mul

Neural Insensitivity to the Effects of Hunger in Women Remitted From Anorexia Nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Anorexia nervosa has the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric condition, yet the pathophysiology of this disorder and its primary symptom, extreme dietary restriction, remains poorly understood. In states of hunger relative to satiety, the rewarding value of food stimuli normally increases to promote eating, yet individuals with anorexia nervosa avoid food despite emaciation. This study's aim was to examine potential neural insensitivity to these effects of hunger in anorexia nervosa. METHODS: At two scanning sessions scheduled 24 hours apart, one after a 16-hour fast and one

Randomized trial evaluating the effectiveness of within versus across-category front-of-package lower-calorie labelling on food demand.

BACKGROUND: Several front-of-pack (FOP) labels identify healthier options by comparing foods within product categories. Alternative approaches label healthier options by comparing across categories. Which approach is superior remains unknown. The objective of this study was to test the effect of a within-category versus across-category FOP lower calorie label on 1) the percentage of labeled products purchased, 2) several measures of calories purchased (total, per dollar and per serving), and 3) total spending. We also tested the moderating effects of hunger and mood on purchasing patterns. ME

Effects of hunger, satiety and oral glucose on effective connectivity between hypothalamus and insular cortex.

The hypothalamus and insular cortex play an essential role in the integration of endocrine and homeostatic signals and their impact on food intake. Resting-state functional connectivity alterations of the hypothalamus, posterior insula (PINS) and anterior insula (AINS) are modulated by metabolic states and caloric intake. Nevertheless, a deeper understanding of how these factors affect the strength of connectivity between hypothalamus, PINS and AINS is missing. This study investigated whether effective (directed) connectivity within this network varies as a function of prandial states (hunger
