Untangling the effects of hunger, anxiety, and nausea on energy intake during intravenous cholecystokinin octapeptide (CCK-8) infusion.

Infusions of cholecystokinin (CCK) may exert their effects on appetite by inducing feelings of nausea or anxiety. In this double blind, placebo controlled crossover study, the impact of these effects on appetite were examined. Fifteen male subjects received a 20 min i.v. infusion of cholecystokinin octapeptide (CCK-8) (4 ng/kg/min) or saline. The infusion commenced 20 min after a soup preload and 10 min before an ad libitum test meal. Visual analogue scales of appetite and mood were measured over 3 h, and subjects were instructed to report any other sensations they experienced over this time.

Attractiveness to mexican fruit flies of combinations of acetic acid with ammonium/amino attractants with emphasis on effects of hunger.

Ammonium acetate was more attractive than other ammonium salts to Mexican fruit flies (Anastrepha ludens) in an orchard test. We hypothesized that acetic acid enhanced the attractiveness of ammonia in the orchard test and that acetic acid may similarly enhance attractiveness of AMPu, an attractant consisting of a mixture of ammonium bicarbonate or ammonium carbonate, methylamine HCl, and putrescine. In laboratory experiments, acetic acid was attractive to flies deprived of either yeast hydrolysate or both sugar and yeast hydrolysate but not to flies fed both sugar and yeast hydrolysate. AMPu/a

The effects of fear and hunger on food neophobia in humans.

We examined the effects of hunger and fear on food neophobia in humans. Subjects came to the experiment five or more hours food-deprived (high hunger) or two or less hours food-deprived (low hunger) and were assigned either to give a speech (high fear) or to listen to a speech (low fear). All subjects were then given the task of selecting for tasting one member of each of ten pairs of foods, each pair consisting of one novel and one familiar food. The number of novel foods chosen was the measure of food neophobia (with fewer choices indicative of greater neophobia). The results indicated that

Changes in self-stimulation at stimulation-bound eating and drinking sites in the lateral hypothalamus during food or water deprivation, glucoprivation, and intracellular or extracellular dehydration.

These studies were designed to examine the effects of "hunger" induced by food deprivation, 2-deoxy-D-glucose (200 mg/kg), or insulin (2 U/kg) and "thirst" induced by water deprivation, sodium chloride (4 M), or polyethylene glycol (5 ml of 30% w/w) on lateral hypothalamic self-stimulation in 40 male Long-Evans rats. Changes in self-stimulation were evaluated at electrodes that produced stimulation-bound eating and/or drinking or neither behavior. Daily 30-min test sessions consisted of three 5-min periods of self-stimulation alternated with three 5-min periods when bar presses resulted in a 5

The anorectic effect of FG 7142, a partial inverse agonist at benzodiazepine recognition sites, is reversed by CGS 8216 and clonazepam but not food deprivation.

The benzodiazepine partial inverse agonist N'-methyl-beta-carboline-3-carboxamide (FG 7142; 5.0 and 10.0 mg/kg, i.p.) produced a dose-dependent reduction in the consumption of a familiar, highly palatable diet by non-food-deprived male rats. At dose levels which exhibited no significant intrinsic effects, the benzodiazepine receptor antagonist 2-phenylpyrazolo-[4,3-c]-quinoline-3(5H)-one (CGS 8216; 1.25-5.0 mg/kg, i.p.) reversed the anorectic effect of FG 7142. When clonazepam and FG 7142 were given in combination, mutual cancelling of their opposite effects occurred. These results are consist

Effects of hunger on aggression, approach, and avoidance by juncos (Junco hyemalis).

The aggressive tendencies of male dark-eyed juncos Junco hyemalis did not differ significantly following deprivation from food for 20 and 60 min. Tendencies to approach opponents at food, in contrast, increased with longer deprivation. Acute hunger and aggression are thus not competing behavioral systems. Nor do differences in rates of approach by subordinates affect aggressive tendencies of dominant birds.

Educational benefits of the United States school feeding program: a critical review of the literature.

In the Child Nutrition Act of 1966 it was stated that educational progress was an objective of the United States School Feeding programs. In spite of this fact no serious attempt has ever been made to evaluate whether this objective has been met; the few evaluations that have been conducted lack scientific rigor. As a whole the studies fail to provide a strong basis from which to make valid inferences regarding the long-term effects of the feeding program on school achievement and adaptation. Studies that have focused on the short-term effects of hunger or morning feeding suggest that the prov

Predation, aggression, and activity levels in food-deprived sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus and L. gibbosus): motivational interactions.

Three experiments investigated the effects of food deprivation on several behavioral categories in two species of sunfish. In Experiment 1, predatory behavior and general activity were observed under five levels of deprivation. For both species, predation measures increased in a similar negatively accelerating manner with increasing deprivation, while activity changed in a more complex fashion. Experiment 2 examined the effects of deprivation on activity in a novel environment and showed that the deprivation effects of Experiment 1 were masked by the response to the new setting. In Experiment

Motivational effects of hunger on time estimation and delay of gratification in obese and nonobese boys.

Time estimates and ability to delay gratification of obese and nonobese boys were compared by a 2x2x2 factorial experiment in which hunger and edibility of incentives were manipulated. Hunger did not affect estimates of the obese boys, while it significantly shortened estimates made by the nonobese boys when the hunger drive was made either specific or nonspecific by varying incentive conditions. Although estimates of the nonobese boys were significantly shorter in the edible than nonedible incentive condition, edibility of incentives did not affect the estiamtes of the obese, suggesting a gen

Runway performance of rats for brain-stimulation or food reward: effects of hunger and priming.

In a runway paradigm, pretrial electric stimulation of the brain (ESB), food deprivation, and to a lesser extent water deprivation increased the running speed of rats to an ESB reward. The trial-by-trail course of the change in running speed after the manipulation of food deprivation resembled the steplike performance effect seen when pretrial priming ESB is changed rather than the incremental learning effect seen when the response contingent ESB is changed. In a second experiment, pretrial ESB enhance rats' performance for an ESB reward, but act in opposing directions rats' performance for a

Effects of hunger and VI value on VI pacing.

In two experiments, each involving four rats, responses preceded by an inter-response time between 8 and 10 sec in duration were intermittently reinforced. In Experiment I, final performance was compared under two hunger levels, while the frequency of reinforcement was held constant by a VI 5 schedule. In Experiment II, hunger was held constant and VI 3 was compared with VI 8. Both hunger and frequency of reinforcement increased the over-all rate of response, but the exact effects of these operations on temporal discrimination were different for different rats. Usually, a peak "response probab
