Chronic low-dose cadmium exposure accelerates the onset and metastasis of invasive mammary carcinoma and promotes immunosuppression in the tumor microenvironment in BALB-neuT mice.

Cadmium (Cd), a heavy metal known to act as an endocrine disruptor, has been implicated in breast cancer (BC) via mechanisms that involve both estrogen receptor (ER)-dependent and -independent pathways. We used BALB-neuT transgenic mice, a model of aggressive ErbB2-driven mammary carcinogenesis, to evaluate the effects of chronic exposure to an environmentally relevant, low-dose of Cd on tumor onset, multiplicity, progression, immune microenvironment, and metastasis. Cd exposure significantly accelerated tumor onset and increased tumor multiplicity and weight, reducing both tumor-free and over

Heart rate variability as a dual-use digital biomarker: integrating clinical, AI, and operational perspectives on human performance and resilience.

BACKGROUND: Heart rate variability (HRV) reflects autonomic regulation and has emerged as a dual-use digital biomarker across clinical care and operational performance. We sought to integrate evidence on HRV’s physiological basis, clinical utility, defense applications, and AI-enabled analytics, and to propose a cross-sector framework for predictive, ethical deployment. METHODS: We conducted a structured literature review in MEDLINE (PubMed), Embase, and Scopus between July 1st and August 31st, 2025, without language restriction. Eligible studies reported human HRV parameters measured in clini

Precision cytokine modulation to overcome tumor microenvironment-driven resistance to immune checkpoint blockade.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) can elicit durable remissions, yet most solid tumors show primary non-response or acquired resistance because the tumor microenvironment (TME) limits T-cell priming, trafficking and effector fitness. Cytokines orchestrate these barriers by shaping spatial immune architecture, regulating suppressive myeloid programmes and inducing inhibitory ligands such as PD-L1. In this Review, we synthesize mechanistic and clinical evidence and propose a push-pull framework for cytokine modulation during checkpoint blockade: locally amplifying Th1/CTL-supporting signals (I

The hidden crisis: a multinational analysis of neurosurgical residency training in Latin America.

Neurosurgery residency in Latin America is a rigorous and demanding process, often characterized by prolonged working hours, variable access to academic resources and inconsistent institutional support. While global discussions on resident well-being, workload regulation and burnout prevention are advancing, there remains limited multicenter, region-specific data on these issues in Latin America. This study aimed to evaluate the training conditions, mental health, mentorship availability and access to educational resources among neurosurgery residents across the region. Multinational cross-sec

Objective Biobehavioral Measures Reflect Burnout States and Temporal Changes in a Nursing Population: A Prospective Observational Assessment.

Background/Objectives: Nurses are at high risk for burnout. Identification of biomarkers associated with early manifestations of distress is essential to support effective intervention efforts. Methods: Fifty nurses from a large hospital system participated in a 30-day study of biopsychosocial factors that may contribute to burnout. Nurses wore an Oura ring that collected behavioral data and they completed a self-report burnout questionnaire at baseline and the end of the study period. Machine learning models were developed to evaluate whether objective measures could predict burnout states an

Development and validation of a digital burnout scale in artificial intelligence era.

INTRODUCTION: The rapid adoption of AI-driven digital technologies in higher education has intensified students' exposure to digital demands, increasing the risk of digital burnout. Existing research lacks validated instruments that capture the multidimensional nature of digital burnout in AI-enhanced learning environments. This study aimed to develop and validate a comprehensive Digital Burnout Scale for college students, grounded in the Stressor-Strain-Outcome (SSO) model and Conservation of Resources (COR) theory. METHODS: Using a multi-stage mixed-methods design, the study first conducted

Armillaria mellea polysaccharide improves chronic fatigue through intestinal flora.

Chronic fatigue (CF) is a fatigue-related disorder characterized by persistent exhaustion. Potential associations may exist among the release of pro-inflammatory factors, the activation of oxidative stress, and gut microbiota dysbiosis in patients with CF. Notably, edible fungal polysaccharides, as natural functional foods with no adverse effects, hold potential therapeutic value for CF intervention. Although the potential interventional effects of edible and medicinal fungi on CF have been partially explored, the underlying mechanisms remain incompletely elucidated. This study aimed to invest

The Impact of Adverse News About the Gaza War on the Health of Iranian Elderly People: A Qualitative Study.

INTRODUCTION: Studies on the responses of older people who have experienced disasters are contradictory, suggesting two opposing theoretical approaches: the vulnerability and resilience approaches. Therefore, this qualitative study examines the impact of the media on Iranian elderly people during the Gaza war in 2024. METHODS: This qualitative study employed purposive sampling to select 12 elderly participants aged 65 years and older. Data collection was done from September to December 2024 through semi-structured interviews. The interviews were transcribed, and the data analysis was conducte

T Cell Exhaustion in Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Substantial Barrier in Immunotherapy.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), accounting for over 90% of primary liver cancers, remains a major global challenge for healthcare professionals. While immunotherapy has transformed the landscape of cancer treatment, its success is often limited by immune resistance, particularly through T cell exhaustion which remains a major barrier to effective immune responses in solid tumours, including HCC. As tumours progress, T cells undergo a gradual loss of functionality due to continuous antigen exposure and fail to exert effective anti-tumour responses. During this process, alterations in the epigen

Weathering the Storm Together: Therapists' Experiences Treating War Trauma Survivors While Managing Their Own Concurrent Trauma.

Mental health therapists (MHTs) providing care during shared traumatic reality face distinct emotional and professional challenges, particularly when they are also personally affected. While a central concern is compassion fatigue, emotional exhaustion that arises from prolonged exposure to others' trauma, this concept does not capture the dual nature of the MHT's traumatic experience, both as a citizen of the region and as a helping professional exposed to the traumatic narratives of their clients. This study explores the shared traumatic reality experiences of MHTs working in a war zone, off

Healthcare conflict management in resource-constrained settings: evidence from two hospitals in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Conflict is a recurring feature of healthcare delivery, especially in hospitals that operate with limited staff, inadequate supplies, and heavy workloads. Although conflict among healthcare workers in Ghana has been documented, little research has explored how it emerges within the everyday routines of resource-constrained hospitals or how staff interpret and respond to it. This study examined the causes, effects, and management of institutional conflict in two public hospitals in the Effutu Municipality, using Organizational Information Theory and the Institutional Logics Perspect

The relationship between using communication media in non-working hours and job burnout in Jeddah.

Utilization of communication media for work life is an inevitable aspect of most jobs. It is regarded as a two-edged sword, as it significantly affects employees’ mental well-being and efficiency, particularly outside working hours. Despite growing global concern about digital overconnectivity, limited empirical research has examined how communication media use during non-working hours contributes to job burnout, particularly in Saudi Arabia. This research aimed to determine whether using Communication Media in Non-Working Hours (CMNWH) through the lens of Technology-Assisted Supplemental Work

Development of a multicomponent survey of experiences of tragedy-based and fear-based trauma in COVID-19 healthcare professionals.

BACKGROUND: Life confronts us with many aversive events, including injuries, diseases, losses, decay and death. These life realities often stimulate compassion motives orientated to try to alleviate and prevent suffering. While concepts of 'stress' and 'fear' have dominated the discourse on responses to 'traumatic events', a less common narrative is that of 'tragedy'. Tragedy narratives focus on the empathic sensitivities to the 'suffering and traumas of life' and hence are related to compassion motives. Tragedy has a long history with complex meanings and is focused on sadness and loss, rathe

The hidden threat: Microplastics and cancer biology.

Micro- and nano-plastics (MNPs) are small plastic particles generated from the fragmentation of larger plastic products, which are widely manufactured and often improperly discarded. Because MNPs are not fully degradable, they persist and accumulate across all ecosystems, contributing to global environmental concerns. The detection of MNPs within the food chain and in various human tissues and biological samples has raised pressing questions about their potential health risks. Cellular exposure to MNPs induces molecular, metabolic, and biological changes that may culminate in pathological outc
