Heat-Related Illnesses.

Heat-related illnesses encompass a spectrum of disorders resulting from exposure to high temperatures and the body's inability to efficiently dissipate heat. These syndromes range from mild illnesses, such as heat edema, heat rash, and heat cramps, to more concerning manifestations such as exercise-associated collapse, heat exhaustion, and exertional rhabdomyolysis. The most severe and potentially life-threatening heat-related illnesses include exercise collapse associated with sickle cell trait, severe exercise-associated hyponatremia, and heat stroke. Common risk factors of heat-related illn

Temporal Metabolomics Profiling Reveals Liver Metabolic Control in Single and Repeated Exhaustive Exercise in Murine Models.

Excessive exercise can induce metabolic disturbances that precede overt clinical disease. As the central metabolic organ, the liver plays a pivotal role in systemic metabolic adaptations to exercise, although its dynamic metabolic response remains poorly characterized. Characterizing hepatic metabolic shifts could advance early diagnostic and preventive strategies. Single exhaustive exercise (SEE) is an acute, short-duration, high exercise load, often used to model a single bout of supra-physiological exertion, whereas repeated exhaustive exercise (REE) models the cumulative physiological stre

Immediate effect of ice and dry massage during rest breaks on recovery in MMA fighters : a randomized crossover clinical trial study.

The MMA fight consists of 5 rounds of 5 min with minimal breaks between the rounds. The exertion load is excessive for the fighters, and the 1-minute breaks give little time for any intervention. This study aimed to examine the acute effects of two methods of regenerative strategies, ice massage and dry massage, and analyze their impact on Reactive Strength Index (RSI - m s- 1), muscles' biomechanical properties: muscle tone (T-Hz), elasticity (E - arb- relative arbitrary unit), stiffness (S - N/m), pressure pain threshold, (PPT - N/cm²), and compare their influence with passive rest. Protective Effects of Ganoderma Triterpenoids Supplementation Against Myocardial Injury in Exhaustion Exercise Mice via Regulation of the Keap1/Nrf2/HO-1 Pathway.

Exhaustive physical exercise, while promoting cardiovascular fitness, can paradoxically lead to excessive oxidative stress, systemic fatigue, and myocardial injury. Despite increasing awareness of exhaustion exercise myocardial damage, effective preventive strategies remain limited. Natural bioactive compounds with antioxidant and antiapoptotic properties have gained attention as potential interventions. Among them, triterpenoids derived from Ganoderma lucidum triterpenoids (GLTs) are notable for their potent free radical scavenging and cytoprotective effects. However, their cardioprotective p

Feasibility of continuous bronchoscopy during exercise in the assessment of large airway movement in healthy subjects.

Excessive dynamic airway collapse (EDAC) is a recognized cause of exertional dyspnea arising due to invagination of the trachea and/or main bronchi. EDAC is typically assessed by evaluating large airway movement with forced expiratory maneuvers. This differs from the respiratory response to exercise hyperpnea. We aimed to evaluate large airway movement during physical activity, with continuous bronchoscopy during exercise (CBE), in healthy subjects and compare findings with resting bronchoscopic maneuvers and imaging techniques. Twenty-eight individuals were recruited to complete two visits in

Effects of cryo-facial mask on running performance in amateur middle-distance runners.

The excess heat accumulated during exercise can lead to stress-induced fatigue, possibly impairing athletic performance. Various precooling techniques have been applied to enhance thermal comfort, reduce perception of effort, and improve endurance. In this randomized crossover study, twelve male amateur middle-distance runners (age: 33.69 ± 5.9 years; body mass: 71.9 ± 4.4 kg; height: 178.4 ± 5.6 cm; V˙O2 peak: 63.3 ± 5.6 mL min-1·kg-1) wore a facial cooling mask before a time-to-exhaustion (TTE) test on a treadmill, under cryostimulation or control conditions. Heatwaves and human sleep: Stress response versus adaptation.

The World Meteorological Organization considers a heatwave as "a period of statistically unusual hot weather persisting for a number of days and nights". Accompanying the ongoing global climate change, sharp heatwave bouts occur worldwide, growing in frequency and intensity, and beginning earlier in the season. Heatwaves exacerbate the risk of heat-related illnesses, hence human morbidity and mortality, particularly in vulnerable elderly and children. Heat-related illnesses present a continuum from normothermic (prickly heat, heat edema, heat cramps, heat tetany) to hyperthermic syndromes (fro

Wearable Sensor Technology to Predict Core Body Temperature: A Systematic Review.

Heat-related illnesses, which range from heat exhaustion to heatstroke, affect thousands of individuals worldwide every year and are characterized by extreme hyperthermia with the core body temperature (CBT) usually > 40 °C, decline in physical and athletic performance, CNS dysfunction, and, eventually, multiorgan failure. The measurement of CBT has been shown to predict heat-related illness and its severity, but the current measurement methods are not practical for use in high acuity and high motion settings due to their invasive and obstructive nature or excessive costs. Noninvasive predicti

Prolonged cortisol elevation alters whole body and tissue metabolism in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss).

Chronic elevation of circulating cortisol is known to have deleterious effects on fish, but information about the consequences of prolonged cortisol elevation on the metabolism of fish is scarce. To test the effects of chronic cortisol elevation on the aerobic performance of rainbow trout, we examined how two severities of chronically elevated plasma cortisol levels affected the oxygen uptake during rest and after exhaustive exercise using a high (HC) and a medium cortisol (MC) treatment. High cortisol doses significantly affected standard (SMR) and maximum metabolic rates (MMR) compared to co

Parkin Mediates Mitophagy to Participate in Cardioprotection Induced by Late Exercise Preconditioning but Bnip3 Does Not.

BACKGROUND: Late exercise preconditioning (LEP) is confirmed to have a protective effect on acute cardiovascular stress. However, the mechanisms by which mitophagy participates in exercise preconditioning (EP)-induced cardioprotection remain unclear. LEP may involve mitophagy mediated by the receptors PARK2 gene-encoded E3 ubiquitin ligase (Parkin) and BCL2/adenovirus E1B 19 kDa protein-interacting protein 3 (Bnip3) to scavenge damaged mitochondria. METHODS: Our EP protocol involved four 10-minute periods of running, separated by 10-minute recovery intervals, plus a period of exhaustive runni

Exercise-stimulated FGF23 promotes exercise performance via controlling the excess reactive oxygen species production and enhancing mitochondrial function in skeletal muscle.

OBJECTIVE: Physical exercise induces many adaptive changes in skeletal muscle and the whole body and improves metabolic characteristics. Fibroblast growth-factor 23 (FGF23) is a unique member of the FGF family that acts as a hormone regulating phosphate metabolism, calcitriol concentration, and kidney functions. The role of FGF23 in exercise and skeletal muscle is largely unknown yet. MATERIALS AND METHODS: C57BL/6J mice were exercised on a motor treadmill. Mice serum FGF23 levels; FGF23 mRNA expression in various organs including the liver, heart, skeletal muscle tissue, and thyroid; and FGF

High-CHO diet increases post-exercise oxygen consumption after a supramaximal exercise bout.

We investigated if carbohydrate (CHO) availability could affect the excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) after a single supramaximal exercise bout. Five physically active men cycled at 115% of peak oxygen uptake (V̇O2 peak) until exhaustion with low or high pre-exercise CHO availability. The endogenous CHO stores were manipulated by performing a glycogen-depletion exercise protocol 48 h before the trial, followed by 48 h consuming either a low- (10% CHO) or a high-CHO (80% CHO) diet regime. Compared to the low-CHO diet, the high-CHO diet increased time to exhaustion (3.0±0.6 min vs 4

Activation of γ-aminobutyric Acid (A) Receptor Protects Hippocampus from Intense Exercise-induced Synapses Damage and Apoptosis in Rats.

BACKGROUND: Our previous study has confirmed that one bout of exhaustion (Ex) can cause hippocampus neurocyte damage, excessive apoptosis, and dysfunction. Its initial reason is intracellular calcium overload in hippocampus triggered by N-methyl-D-aspartic acid receptor (NMDAR) over-activation. NMDAR activation can be suppressed by γ-aminobutyric acid (A) receptor (GABAAR). Whether GABAAR can prevent intense exercise-induced hippocampus apoptosis, damage, or dysfunction will be studied in this study. METHODS: According to dose test, rats were randomly divided into control (Con), Ex, muscimol
