Child sexual abuse in Canada: Prevalence, perpetrators, and characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Detailed information about the epidemiology of child sexual abuse (CSA) in Canada is lacking. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of CSA; determine if CSA prevalence differs by gender and age group; and describe CSA characteristics, including perpetrators, age of onset, age of cessation, duration, and chronicity. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Adults aged 18-49 years provided retrospective accounts of CSA in a cross-sectional survey (Childhood Adversity and Resilience-Youth and Early Adulthood Research Study [CARe-YEARS]; N = 3767; May 2024). METHODS: CSA included non-contact CSA (

A Scoping Review of Artificial Intelligence-Generated Image-Based Sexual Abuse: Terminology, Nature, Prevalence, Attitudes, and Harms.

Artificial intelligence-generated image-based sexual abuse (AI-IBSA), colloquially known as "sexual deepfakes," includes the non-consensual creation and/or sharing of intimate images generated by and/or modified using artificial intelligence ("AI-IBSA content"). While literature on AI-IBSA is growing, a scoping review of empirical (scholarly and gray) literature on the terminology, nature, prevalence (victimization and perpetration), community attitudes toward, and harms and impacts of AI-IBSA by and/or against adults is yet to be undertaken through a gender-inclusive lens. Thus, we searched s

Multiple and Recurrent Vaginal Foreign Bodies in an 8-Year-Old Child: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Vaginal foreign bodies (VFBs) are an uncommon but under-recognized cause of recurrent vaginal discharge in children. Evidence on the management of multiple and recurrent VFBs is limited. CASE: An 8-year-old girl with mild intellectual disability presented with foul-smelling vaginal discharge. Vaginoscopy under general anesthesia revealed multiple toy screws, magnetic pieces, and plastic beads, all of which were removed. She was evaluated for child sexual abuse (CSA). Four months later, she re-presented with recurrent VFBs that were successfully removed using warm saline flushing,

Fracture Prevalence Among Those With Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder/Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.

Previous series have questioned bone fragility in those with hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD) or hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS). These conclusions have been extrapolated to infants and children often in the setting of suspected child abuse. Few studies address this in non-ambulatory children, leaving medical professionals and the courts alike to debate the reported observations. One hundred patients with HSD/hEDS were recruited from a large hypermobility clinic. Each was required to have a guardian/parent present to attest to the fracture history for the entire age of the indi

Plasma proteomic signatures in bipolar disorder and their implications for data-driven patient stratification.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a heterogeneous mood disorder that lacks robust biomarkers for biological stratification. We used high-throughput plasma proteomics to characterize case-control differences, identify proteomic subgroups within BD, and examine their associations with blood-based markers and clinical features. Plasma samples from the French I-GIVE (Immuno-Genetics, Inflammation, retroVirus, Environment) cohort, including 248 participants with BD and 76 healthy controls, were assessed using the Olink Reveal panel (1,034 proteins). Age-, sex-, and BMI-adjusted case-control analyses identif

From silence to sharing: A six-month prospective study on adult disclosure of childhood sexual abuse.

BACKGROUND: Disclosure of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is often assumed to be beneficial. However, prospective research examining outcomes associated with disclosure remains scarce, limiting evidence-based guidance for adults considering disclosure. OBJECTIVE: The primary aim was to examine changes in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms following first-time disclosure of CSA to personal contacts and to test whether perceived supportiveness of confidants' responses moderated these changes. The secondary aim was to explore characteristics of CSA disclosure. METHODS: Forty adults with

Prevalence and associated factors of interpersonal violence in organized sport in a population-based sample of Quebec (Canada) adolescents: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies usually examine interpersonal violence (IV) in sport using convenience samples, potentially biasing exposure estimates. This study aimed to estimate IV prevalence and identify associated factors in a population-based sample of Quebec adolescents. METHODS: A cross-sectional population-based sample (Study on the Experiences of Adolescents in Sport Contexts in Quebec - ÉVAQ) nested within the representative Quebec Health Survey of High School Students (QHSHSS) was employed. Between November 2022 and June 2023, students from 485 high schools were recruited for the ÉVA

A mixed-methods study of mental health and trauma among women in the sex work industry in Spain.

BACKGROUND: The sexual commerce industry significantly impacts the psychological health of prostituted women. This study examines mental health damages and complex trauma in 12 women exposed to this commerce. The goal of this work was to evaluate the mental health damage and trauma-related symptoms of these women at the beginning of an intervention. METHODS: A mixed methodology was used. Quantitatively, four measures were administered to assess subjective distress, the depression-anxiety-stress triad, post-traumatic stress disorder, and cumulative trauma in everyday life. For qualitative anal

Screening for suspected child physical abuse in a Colombian pediatric emergency department: Clinical characteristics and performance of SPUTOVAMO-R.

BACKGROUND: Physical abuse causes morbidity and mortality in young children, yet Latin American emergency data are scarce. OBJECTIVE: To describe characteristics associated with a multidisciplinary child-protection panel's classification and estimate SPUTOVAMO-R sensitivity relative to ICD-10 coding and panel classification. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Children aged 1 month-18 years with emergency department records at a pediatric referral hospital in Bogotá, Colombia (2015-2017), coded with physical-abuse ICD-10 diagnoses. METHODS: Retrospective cross-sectional study. High- and low-probabili

Research on Sexual Victimization Across the Lifespan: Highlighting the Work of Emerging Early Career Investigators.

Sexual victimization is a pervasive public health concern with profound and enduring consequences across the lifespan. Although research has substantially advanced scientific understanding of childhood sexual abuse, scholarship has often focused on abuse within specific developmental stages (e.g. childhood sexual abuse [CSA], adolescent/adulthood sexual assault), limiting comprehensive insight into how sexual violence unfolds over time and across contexts. This special issue advances the Journal of Child Sexual Abuse's expanded focus on studying sexual victimization across the lifespan by feat

Adverse Childhood Experiences, Allostatic Load, and Adult Health: The Mediating and Moderating Role of Personality in a Nationally Representative US Study.

OBJECTIVE: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are strong risk factors for biological dysregulation, morbidity, and mortality over the lifespan. Although research has begun investigating potential risk and resilience processes that mediate and moderate these associations, little research has examined the unique role that personality plays in linking ACEs with biological and clinical health in adulthood. METHOD: To investigate, we used cross-sectional data from the 2006 and 2008 assessments of the nationally representative US Health and Retirement Study (n=9708). Exposures included any ACEs (

Uniformed families, unequal outcomes?: A multicenter retrospective study of non-accidental trauma in military and civilian children.

BACKGROUND: Non-accidental trauma (NAT) or child physical abuse (CPA) is associated with many social factors, including low socioeconomic status, mental health difficulties, and substance use. Military families are uniquely vulnerable to abuse, particularly during periods of increased stress. NAT outcome data in military-dependent children are limited to a single-center study showing longer length of stay (LOS), higher mortality, and more complications. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of patients (≤18 years) with NAT at eight US children's hospitals from 2018 to 2023, diagnosed

Suicidal Behaviour and Non-Suicidal Self-Injury in Adolescents With Childhood Sexual Abuse: Associated Clinical Factors and Psychological Correlates.

BACKGROUND: Childhood sexual abuse is a major developmental trauma associated with elevated risk for non-suicidal self-injury and suicidal behaviour in adolescence. Yet, it remains unclear whether abused adolescents show distinct motivational profiles for self-injury and how depression and emotion dysregulation jointly relate to suicide risk. AIMS: To compare suicide risk, depressive severity, and emotion dysregulation across adolescents with childhood sexual abuse and self-injury, adolescents with self-injury without sexual abuse, and controls; to identify unique predictors of suicide risk;

Gradient Identification and Institutional Responses to the Risk of Sexual Abuse of Left-Behind Minors: An Empirical Analysis Based on 187 Judicial Cases in Eastern Sichuan.

Based on 187 judicial cases involving sexual abuse of left-behind minors in eastern Sichuan (2021-2025), this study employs binary logistic regression, interrupted time series (ITS) analysis, and event history analysis to examine the effects of absent guardianship, acquaintance networks, and the mandatory reporting system on the risk of abuse. The study found that for every one-level increase in the degree of guardianship absence, the risk of repeated abuse increased by 67.3% (odds ratio [OR] = 1.673, p = .001); the recurrence rate of abuse by acquaintances who are not immediate family members

Intergenerational childhood trauma: associations by subtype across two generations in a longitudinal Barbados birth cohort.

Background: Intergenerational continuity of childhood trauma is a major public health concern. Better understanding of patterns can inform prevention, particularly for subtypes beyond physical abuse and in underserved populations. Objective: This study examined associations between parent and offspring histories of childhood maltreatment in a longitudinal Barbados birth cohort, with a focus on subtype-specific patterns of continuity. Method: Using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form (CTQ-SF), we assessed childhood maltreatment in Generation 1 (G1; N = 68) and their emerging adult off

Re-examining the Concordance Between Child Abuse Reported by Youth and Casefile Records.

OBJECTIVE: Studying child abuse dimensions (type, severity, and frequency) provides fine-grained information for understanding abuse sequelae. However, different abuse measurement methods often exhibit low agreement with one another. Retrospective self-reports and official records show questionable concordance in measuring abuse types. To date, no research has explored concordance of abuse severity and frequency. The current study examined concordance of official case records and self-reports of child abuse type, severity, and frequency. We also explored how concordance may depend on confirmed

Across the Life Course and Into Custody: Understanding Incarceration Pathways of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Individuals.

Incarceration is rarely an isolated event but reflects cumulative institutional and interpersonal disadvantage across the life course. Although life-course criminology explains these trajectories for the general population, it has rarely been applied to d/Deaf and hard-of-hearing (D/HH) individuals, a population that is both understudied and difficult to access. This study addresses that gap using Life History Calendars to reconstruct the pathways of 16 incarcerated D/HH individuals in the southeastern United States. Findings identify early communication deprivation and family isolation as dis
