The moderating role of impulsivity in the association between sexual abuse and substance use frequency across countries, gender identities, and sexual orientations.

This study examined how impulsivity moderates the relationship between sexual abuse and substance use frequency in a large international sample. Participants (N = 64,472) completed the Alcohol, Smoking, and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST-11), the UPPS-P Impulsive Behavior Scale, and sexual abuse measures through the International Sex Survey. Structural equation models tested associations between childhood sexual abuse (CSA), adolescent/adult sexual abuse (AASA), and combined exposure with substance use frequency, and explored moderation by impulsivity across gender identity, sexu

Partnering With Lived Experience Experts to Co-Design and Co-Facilitate Trauma-Informed Practice Training for Health Professionals: Evaluation Findings.

BACKGROUND: There is growing demand for health professionals to be upskilled in trauma-informed practice to provide dignity-based healthcare responses to clients with lived experience of child sexual abuse and other adverse childhood experiences. Traditionally, such training has been developed and delivered by clinical experts or academics with specialised training, excluding those with lived experience expertise. Limited research has explored the involvement of lived experience experts in professional learning. METHODS: This study evaluated the quality and impact of a trauma-informed practic

What Is the Impact of Coercive Control on Children Exposed to Domestic Violence?

Moving beyond traditional frameworks focused on physical violence, the article adopts a comprehensive definition of coercive control as encompassing psychological abuse, isolation, stalking, and the systematic denial of autonomy, and argues that its effects on children are distinct and deeply harmful, often persisting long after direct exposure ends. Three key mechanisms of harm are identified: (1) credible threats, which compel children and mothers to constantly modify their behavior to avoid punishment, creating a chronically stressful environment akin to "walking on eggshells"; (2) hypervig

Submerged Spark Plasma Discharges for the Removal of Antibiotics, Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria, and Resistance Genes.

The widespread use of antibiotics in aquaculture and livestock production has contributed to the dissemination of antibiotics, antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB), and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in aquatic environments. In this study, submerged spark plasma systems were evaluated for the removal of rifampicin, rifampicin-resistant Escherichia coli O157:H7, and ARG-associated DNA in different water matrices using a 40 mL single-spark reactor and a 1000 mL multiple-spark reactor. The single-spark system achieved 99.43% removal of rifampicin within 8 min and >5-log reduction of E. coli O1

A soft magnetoelastic ball for self-powered Parkinson's disease diagnosis.

While the epidemiological literature recognizes associations between chronic non-cancer pain (CNCP), opioid use disorder (OUD), and interpersonal trauma stemming from physical, emotional, sexual abuse or neglect, the complex etiologies and interplay between interpersonal and structural traumas in CNCP populations are underexamined. Research has documented the relationship between experiencing multiple adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and the likelihood of developing an OUD as an adult. However, the ACEs framework is criticized for failing to name the social and structural contexts that sha

Risk factors for suicide attempt among adolescents reporting suicidal ideation by sexual and gender minority status: Evidence from the 2022 Minnesota Student Survey.

BACKGROUND: Suicide is a leading cause of death among adolescents, yet most adolescents who report suicidal ideation do not attempt nor die by suicide. To prevent injury and death, it is thus vital to explore factors potentiating the transition from suicidal ideation to suicidal attempt, especially in high-risk groups like sexual and gender minority (SGM) adolescents. Guided by an "ideation-to-action" framework, we explored risk factors for suicide attempt (ie, "painful and provocative experiences") among adolescents reporting suicidal ideation by SGM status. METHODS: Data were drawn from the

A comprehensive approach to child sexual abuse: Insights for dermatologists.

Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a serious public health issue in India, with long-lasting physical, emotional and psychological consequences. Dermatologists play a crucial, though often underappreciated, role in the identification and management of CSA due to expertise in recognising and interpreting cutaneous signs, which are the most common and visible indicators of abuse. The authors explore the pivotal role of dermatologists in the multidisciplinary approach to CSA, emphasising their involvement in history-taking, physical examination, injury interpretation, and forensic evidence collection. Sexual Violence Among Varsity Athletes: A Literature Review of Risk Factors and Prevention Efforts.

Sexual violence (SV) is a significant concern in higher education. Regarding varsity athletes, between 29% and 45% have experienced SV, while nearly half report consequences that negatively impact their functioning, yet less than 10% formally report these incidents. This literature review aimed to identify risk factors and prevention recommendations for SV among varsity athletes. A literature review was conducted between May 2023 and July 2024 using keyword searches in academic databases (Ebsco, ProQuest, Érudit) and Google. Inclusion criteria included publications from 2012 onwards (reflectin

Recanting Children's Descriptions of Influences and Pressures to Recant Intrafamilial Child Sexual Abuse.

This study examined interviews with 53 4 to 15-year-old children recanting sexual abuse to determine whether they were forthcoming about potential influences and pressures that could have led them to recant. The great majority (87%) of children mentioned one or more influences or pressures. With respect to influences, about half of children mentioned their positive feelings for the suspect, and about a third mentioned negative consequences for the suspect. About 30% disclosed that their immediate family missed the suspect. About half mentioned concerns about separation from their family, and a

The mediating role of expectational trust in the relationship between emotional intelligence and awareness about child sexual abuse perpetrators.

BACKGROUND: Child sexual abuse perpetrators (CSAPs) differ from the usual criminal stereotype in terms of their modus operandi. This study examines the relationship between emotional intelligence, their expectational trust (i.e., expectational benevolence/malevolence), and awareness of the CSAPs’ characteristics and grooming methods. METHOD: This study employed a correlational, cross-sectional research design within a quantitative framework. In this correlational study, 1137 senior pre-service teachers enrolled in the faculty of education. RESULTS: According to the findings, emotional intellig

A digital intervention to improve mental health and interpersonal resilience in young people who have experienced technology-assisted sexual abuse: a feasibility clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the present study was to conduct a feasibility trial of i-Minds, a digital mental health intervention (DMHI) designed to improve mentalisation in young people (YP) who have experienced technology-assisted sexual abuse (TASA). Enhancing mentalisation may reduce the risk of re-victimisation, strengthen resilience, and support management of TASA-related distress. However, evidence-based interventions for TASA are nascent. METHODS: We determined the feasibility, acceptability, and safety of a 6-week mentalisation-based DMHI for YP with TASA in a pre-registered multicent

Treatment Responsivity in Service Members With PTSD and a History of Childhood Trauma and Combat.

INTRODUCTION: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and combat exposure are risk factors for developing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in adulthood. Higher proportions of military service members (SMs) self-report ACEs than do civilians. Combat exposure subsequent to ACEs has been found to predict PTSD severity beyond the expected effect of combat exposure alone. Adverse childhood experiences appear to impede responsivity to treatment of mood disorders; less is known about their impact on responsivity to treatment of PTSD, including following combat exposure. The current study examined wh

The Role of Coping Strategies, Impulsivity and Hypersexuality on the Fear of Offending Among Minor Attracted Persons (MAPs).

Despite generally low rates of sexual offenses among Minor attracted persons (MAPs) and their high desire not to engage in such acts, concerns about the possibility of offending remain significant for some individuals within this population. Consequently, how MAPs deal with this fear is an important question that needs to be addressed. In this study, 299 male MAPs were recruited online to examine how the reliance on different coping strategies impacts their fear of engaging in sexual behaviors with minors. In study 1, binary logistic regression analyses revealed that waiting for the fear to pa

Youth-Produced Images Are the Majority of Child Sexual Abuse Materials: Categories of Youth and Adult Perpetrators From a Victim Based Study.

This study examined dynamics of childhood sexual image abuse episodes prior to age 18, based on victim self-reports. An online sample of individuals aged 18-28 filled out a survey, yielding 3,254 episodes of image abuse that occurred prior to age 18. The majority (86%) of abusive episodes involved images that were produced by youth, either as victims or perpetrators. Less than 8% of episodes involved adult-produced images. Youth were identified as perpetrators in 30% of the episodes, and adults were perpetrators in 29%, with the remainder unidentified. Notably, even among adult-perpetrated epi

Hidden in Plain Sight: Lessons From International Case Studies of Child Sexual Abuse in Early Childhood Education and Care Settings.

Child sexual abuse (CSA) in early childhood education and care (ECEC) settings is sometimes perceived as rare or the subject of a "moral panic". Recent high-profile cases challenge this characterisation, exposing systemic failures within contemporary childcare environments that enable the sexual abuse of very young children. This article examines six prosecuted CSA cases from high-income countries involving serial offending against children under the age of five to explore how such severe abuse can persist despite regulation and apparent safeguards, and contrary to persistent scholarly claims
