Toward a Field That Prevents Harm Before It Begins: A Reflection and Research Agenda for Interpersonal Violence Prevention.

Interpersonal violence research has established the profound developmental, relational, and societal consequences of violence; the next challenge is preventing harm before it occurs. This commentary honors Jon Conte's contributions to the field by advancing a 5-year research and practice agenda that positions corporal punishment and No Hit Zones within a broader, integrated framework for interpersonal violence prevention. Drawing on ecological, public health, social norms, and implementation science perspectives, it identifies priorities for investigating mechanisms of norm change, bystander i

Neuropsychological functioning and coping styles in adolescents in residential care with experiences of physical neglect.

OBJECTIVE: Physical neglect constitutes an experience of deprivation characterised by the absence of care, supervision, and stimulation, which may affect cognitive development during adolescence and hinder the learning of strategies to cope with demands. This study aimed to analyse coping styles and cognitive performance in adolescents in residential care with physical neglect as the predominant form of maltreatment, as well as to examine the association between both dimensions. METHODS: This observational, cross-sectional study included 45 adolescents in residential care, aged between 12 and

From childhood trauma to functional impairment in borderline personality disorder: the mediating role of emotion dysregulation and impulsivity.

BACKGROUND: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is characterized by severe psychosocial dysfunction and high rates of adverse childhood experiences. Emotion dysregulation and impulsivity are core BPD features that may mediate the impact of childhood trauma on functioning. METHODS: A total of 203 outpatients with BPD (mean age = 24.4 years; 84.7% women) completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS), Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11), and Functioning Assessment Short Test (FAST). Associations between childhood trauma (CTQ total and subs

Case report: Bilateral infantile acromion fractures in the setting of congenital glenoid dysplasia.

We report a rare case of a 5-week-old male who presented with isolated acromion fractures occurring bilaterally 10 days apart. As scapular fractures are a high-specificity fracture for abusive injury, these findings were concerning for child abuse. The patient was later diagnosed with congenital glenoid dysplasia. Given this diagnosis with an otherwise normal medical evaluation for physical abuse, this case was deemed indeterminate for abusive injury. The multidisciplinary team consensus was that the injuries were likely fractures resulting from restriction of normal range of glenohumeral moti

Fracture Prevalence Among Those With Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder/Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.

Previous series have questioned bone fragility in those with hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD) or hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS). These conclusions have been extrapolated to infants and children often in the setting of suspected child abuse. Few studies address this in non-ambulatory children, leaving medical professionals and the courts alike to debate the reported observations. One hundred patients with HSD/hEDS were recruited from a large hypermobility clinic. Each was required to have a guardian/parent present to attest to the fracture history for the entire age of the indi

Plasma proteomic signatures in bipolar disorder and their implications for data-driven patient stratification.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a heterogeneous mood disorder that lacks robust biomarkers for biological stratification. We used high-throughput plasma proteomics to characterize case-control differences, identify proteomic subgroups within BD, and examine their associations with blood-based markers and clinical features. Plasma samples from the French I-GIVE (Immuno-Genetics, Inflammation, retroVirus, Environment) cohort, including 248 participants with BD and 76 healthy controls, were assessed using the Olink Reveal panel (1,034 proteins). Age-, sex-, and BMI-adjusted case-control analyses identif

Screening for suspected child physical abuse in a Colombian pediatric emergency department: Clinical characteristics and performance of SPUTOVAMO-R.

BACKGROUND: Physical abuse causes morbidity and mortality in young children, yet Latin American emergency data are scarce. OBJECTIVE: To describe characteristics associated with a multidisciplinary child-protection panel's classification and estimate SPUTOVAMO-R sensitivity relative to ICD-10 coding and panel classification. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Children aged 1 month-18 years with emergency department records at a pediatric referral hospital in Bogotá, Colombia (2015-2017), coded with physical-abuse ICD-10 diagnoses. METHODS: Retrospective cross-sectional study. High- and low-probabili

Adverse Childhood Experiences, Allostatic Load, and Adult Health: The Mediating and Moderating Role of Personality in a Nationally Representative US Study.

OBJECTIVE: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are strong risk factors for biological dysregulation, morbidity, and mortality over the lifespan. Although research has begun investigating potential risk and resilience processes that mediate and moderate these associations, little research has examined the unique role that personality plays in linking ACEs with biological and clinical health in adulthood. METHOD: To investigate, we used cross-sectional data from the 2006 and 2008 assessments of the nationally representative US Health and Retirement Study (n=9708). Exposures included any ACEs (

Uniformed families, unequal outcomes?: A multicenter retrospective study of non-accidental trauma in military and civilian children.

BACKGROUND: Non-accidental trauma (NAT) or child physical abuse (CPA) is associated with many social factors, including low socioeconomic status, mental health difficulties, and substance use. Military families are uniquely vulnerable to abuse, particularly during periods of increased stress. NAT outcome data in military-dependent children are limited to a single-center study showing longer length of stay (LOS), higher mortality, and more complications. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of patients (≤18 years) with NAT at eight US children's hospitals from 2018 to 2023, diagnosed

Intergenerational childhood trauma: associations by subtype across two generations in a longitudinal Barbados birth cohort.

Background: Intergenerational continuity of childhood trauma is a major public health concern. Better understanding of patterns can inform prevention, particularly for subtypes beyond physical abuse and in underserved populations. Objective: This study examined associations between parent and offspring histories of childhood maltreatment in a longitudinal Barbados birth cohort, with a focus on subtype-specific patterns of continuity. Method: Using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form (CTQ-SF), we assessed childhood maltreatment in Generation 1 (G1; N = 68) and their emerging adult off

Network Analysis of Symptom-Level Interrelationships Between Adverse Childhood Experiences and Insomnia Symptoms in Adolescents: A Large-Sample Study.

BACKGROUND: Sleep is essential for the physical and mental health of adolescents. Previous international studies have indicated a strong association between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and insomnia, although relevant reports focusing on Chinese adolescents remain limited. METHODS: This online cross-sectional study ultimately included 6670 adolescents aged 12-18 years. Childhood adversity and insomnia symptoms were assessed using the Adverse Childhood Experiences Questionnaire and the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), respectively. Statistical analyses included chi-square tests to compar

Childhood emotional abuse and adult psychopathology: A multilevel meta-analytic review.

Childhood abuse is a known risk factor for adult psychopathology. The associations between childhood physical abuse (PA) and sexual abuse (SA) and adult psychopathology are more widely documented than those involving childhood emotional abuse (EA). We conducted a multilevel meta-analysis to examine how adult psychopathology relates to childhood EA in comparison to childhood PA and SA. Six electronic databases were searched to identify studies reporting associations between childhood EA, PA, and SA and adult psychopathology symptoms, and 414 effect sizes from 104 studies were analyzed. Adverse Childhood Experiences and HIV Prevalence Among Adolescent Girls and Young Women in Rural South Africa: The Role of Household and Community Violence.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are common among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in Sub-Saharan Africa, who also face a high burden of HIV. While prior research has focused on behavioural pathways linking ACEs and HIV, less attention has been given to the broader spectrum of adversities themselves, particularly household and community violence. This study examined the association between cumulative and individual ACEs and HIV prevalence among AGYW in rural South Africa. This cross-sectional study analysed data from the 2017 follow-up visit of the HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPT

The Relationship Between Trauma Exposure and Nonclinical Psychosis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Trauma exposure is linked to increased psychosis risk; however, critical questions remain about how trauma exposure relates to psychotic-like experiences (PLEs), including the overall effect and whether trauma type, number of exposures, and methodological/sample characteristics influence the relationship. METHOD: A meta-analysis (following PRISMA guidelines) on the relationship between childhood trauma and PLEs was conducted.
