Gender-based violence in dating relationships: educational gaps and perceptions among undergraduate nursing students in Southern Spain.

BACKGROUND: Gender-based violence (GBV) in dating relationships is an escalating public health concern, particularly among adolescents and young adults. University settings, and specifically nursing programmes, are key environments for early detection and prevention. As future frontline health professionals, nursing students must be equipped with the knowledge and skills to identify and respond effectively to intimate partner violence. METHODS: This qualitative exploratory study involved a purposive sample of 24 undergraduate nursing students aged 18 to 24 years; all enrolled in universities

Gun and Other Weapon-Involved Intimate Partner Violence and Psychiatric Symptoms.

IMPORTANCE: Gun, knife, or other weapon involvement in intimate partner violence (IPV) may indicate heightened actual and perceived lethality and coercive control, but its mental health impacts on survivors are poorly understood after accounting for other IPV and prior mental health symptoms. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the adjusted association between gun and other weapon-involved IPV and symptoms of major depressive disorder (MDD), panic disorder (PD), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and adult separation anxiety disorder (ASAD), accounting for concurrent and past nonweapon physical IPV, ps

What Is the Impact of Coercive Control on Children Exposed to Domestic Violence?

Moving beyond traditional frameworks focused on physical violence, the article adopts a comprehensive definition of coercive control as encompassing psychological abuse, isolation, stalking, and the systematic denial of autonomy, and argues that its effects on children are distinct and deeply harmful, often persisting long after direct exposure ends. Three key mechanisms of harm are identified: (1) credible threats, which compel children and mothers to constantly modify their behavior to avoid punishment, creating a chronically stressful environment akin to "walking on eggshells"; (2) hypervig

Multimodal frailty detection in primary care using a portable sensor-based platform: exploratory results.

INTRODUCTION: Frailty reflects age-related decline across multiple physiological systems, reducing resilience and increasing risks of falls, hospitalization, disability, and mortality. Scalable approaches are needed to identify pre-frailty earlier in community-dwelling older adults and enable timely prevention in primary care. OBJECTIVE: To develop and evaluate a multivariable sensor-based framework for early frailty detection using standardized gait and balance assessments in general practice. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study (2021-2024) in southern Réunion Island among reti

Associations between adverse childhood experiences and oral health in Norwegian adults, and the impact of social support and adulthood revictimization. The HUNT4 Survey.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) increase the risk of various health issues, including oral problems. ACEs also heighten the risk of revictimization, though the impact of adulthood revictimization on oral health is less understood. Conversely, positive influences, such as a trusted adult in childhood, may buffer these effects. This study examines how different dimensions of adversity relate to oral health. This cross-sectional study included 37 559 adults from the HUNT4 Survey, a general population study in Norway. We examined distinct ACE exposures: (i) specific ACEs (i.e. sexual, physica

Timing Matters: Maternal Intimate Partner Violence, Parent-Child Relationships, and Adolescent Internalizing in Latine Families.

While exposure to intimate partner violence (IPV) is a known risk factor for adolescent mental health difficulties, the impact of IPV chronicity in Latine families and the role of protective factors, such as strong parent-child bonds, remain understudied. Using longitudinal data from the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study (N = 1,304 Latine mother-child dyads), we examined associations between maternal IPV exposure patterns (none, early: age 0-3, late: age 3-9, or chronic), parent-child relationships at age 9, and adolescent internalizing symptoms at age 15. Maternal IPV exposure was

Differential Exposure to Severe Intimate Partner Violence: Prevalence and Correlates in a Racially and Ethnically Diverse Sample of Immigrant Women.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) remains a critical public health issue, with immigrant women identified as being at heightened risk for severe and near-lethal IPV. This cross-sectional study examined the prevalence of physical, sexual, and psychological IPV among immigrant women in the United States. Further, using the socio-ecological model, it explored the correlates of frequent and severe physical and sexual IPV, near-lethal IPV, and IPV-related injuries at the individual, relationship, and societal/cultural levels. Data were collected from 1,265 immigrant women survivors of IPV from divers

Suicidal Behaviour, Self-Harm and Related Factors: A Retrospective Study from the Adolescent Psychiatric Unit.

Background and objectives: Suicide attempts and self-harm are critical issues in adolescence, often leading to serious and irreversible consequences. These behaviours frequently co-occur and share common biopsychosocial risk factors. Identifying these factors enables a more comprehensive assessment of suicide and self-harm risk, helping specialists recognize high-risk individuals and implement effective preventive measures. This study aimed to examine the association between suicide attempts, self-harm and psychosocial factors among hospitalized adolescents. Materials and methods: A retrospect

Use of clinical vignettes to assess health care professionals' identification and response to elder abuse in dementia care: a cross-sectional study.

Elder abuse affects nearly 15% of older Australians, with those living with dementia at increased risk. This study explored how Australian health care providers identify and respond to different types of elder abuse using six hypothetical vignettes. An online cross-sectional survey (N = 130) evaluated identification and response to instances of elder abuse among geriatricians, general practitioners, and nurse practitioners. Rates of accurate identification were highest for physical (94.3%) and psychological abuse (91.5%), followed by sexual abuse (76.1%), neglect (72.3%), and financial abuse (

The Depths of Elder Abuse: A Narrative Review with Medico-Legal Perspectives.

Elder abuse is an increasingly common problem in modern society, in the context of rapid population aging. Despite increasing awareness, this phenomenon remains heavily underreported, and effective interventions are yet to be made, thus leading to significant medical, social, and legal implications. The purpose of this review is to present an updated situation of the depths of elder abuse, presenting its prevalence both at the global and European level, the two main environments in which it is the most common (community and institutional settings), different forms of abuse, risk factors, and c

Elder abuse from the victim's perspective in the Western Mediterranean Region of Türkiye: an exploratory study.

This exploratory study investigates elder abuse from the perspective of self‑identified victims in Türkiye's Western Mediterranean Region, examining abuse types, perpetrator profiles, and help‑seeking. Using an embedded - convergent mixed‑methods design, we recruited 43 community‑dwelling adults aged 65+ who reported abuse. Analyses integrated quantitative frequencies with qualitative accounts to contextualize patterns and lived experiences. Abuse most often involved financial exploitation (n = 37) and psychological abuse (n = 21). Perpetrators were commonly strangers (n = 16) and immediate fa

From childhood abuse and lack of social support to intimate partner violence: The mediating role of impulsivity and attentional functioning.

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment and limited social support are established risk factors for intimate partner violence against women (IPVAW), yet the self-regulatory mechanisms linking them to perpetration remain unclear. We tested whether impulsivity and sustained attention mediate the associations between childhood abuse, perceived social support, and IPVAW perpetration and recidivism. METHODS: 211 convicted male perpetrators (M = 40.7 years) completed validated self-report and performance measures: Revised Conflict Tactics Scales-Parent-Child (childhood physical/psychological abuse), Fun

Exploring the inter-factor network of psychological abuse, life-event stress, and suicidal behavior: evidence from Chinese college students.

BACKGROUND: Suicide remains a leading cause of death among young adults, yet traditional mediation models often oversimplify the complex and interactive processes linking childhood psychological abuse, stress, and suicidal behavior. OBJECTIVE: This study applied a network analytical framework to examine the inter-factor associations among dimensions of childhood psychological abuse, life-event stress responses, and suicidal behavior in Chinese college students. METHODS: A total of 693 first-year college students completed validated self-report measures of childhood psychological abuse, stres

Meeting Prevention Beyond Awareness: A Qualitative Study Exploring Attitudes and Beliefs Towards Dating Violence and Prevention Among Emerging Adults.

Dating violence (DV) is an increasingly prevalent phenomenon among emerging adults (aged 18-25 years), and the relationship between awareness and behavior remains poorly understood. This study explores emerging adults' attitudes and beliefs toward DV and summarizes recommendations for designing prevention programs. A qualitative study using three focus groups (n = 16 emerging adults aged 18-25; 56% female) was conducted. Data were collected via semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. Three main themes emerged: (1) gender roles, (2) healthy intimate relationships, and (
