The co-occurrence of tuberculosis (TB) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) represents a growing global syndemic that disproportionately affects populations with limited access to healthcare and preventive resources. T2DM is an established independent risk factor for TB, while social determinants of health (SDoH) further contribute to disease susceptibility, delayed diagnosis, and poor clinical outcomes. This narrative literature review examines the impact of SDoH and modifiable lifestyle factors on the TB-T2DM syndemic and highlights opportunities for intervention. A literature review was cond

INTRODUCTION: With over 120 million people forcibly displaced globally, asylum reception systems represent critical epidemiological interfaces. This synthesis is not confined to a single geographic region: evidence was drawn from reception systems across high-income host countries in Europe and, where available, comparable settings elsewhere, reflecting the substantial heterogeneity of reception models worldwide. Within a One Health framework, these socio-spatial environments shape communicable disease dynamics through accommodation density, sanitation capacity, and governance continuity.

African buffalo (Syncerus caffer) are the primary wildlife reservoir for bovine tuberculosis (BTB) in Africa. Infected buffalo populations spread BTB to numerous species in conservation areas as well as to cattle at park boundaries. Quarantine requirements for BTB complicate wild animal metapopulation management. Considerable interest has arisen in the vaccination of cattle and indigenous wildlife species against BTB as an additional control strategy. This pilot trial aimed to evaluate cell-mediated and humoral immune responses in African buffalo immunised against BTB. Twenty-one sub-adult Afr

Drug-resistant tuberculosis(TB) presents a significant challenge to global efforts to control the disease. Addressing this issue requires a comprehensive understanding of drug resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb). The clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat (CRISPR) and CRISPR-associated protein (Cas) system are efficient genome-editing tools for various organisms and have facilitated new research directions regarding drug resistance in M.tb. This review summarizes recent progress in applying CRISPR/Cas technology to investigate drug resistance mechanisms in M.tuber

Melioidosis is an under-recognized tropical infectious disease caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei, an environmental pathogen that persists mainly in soil and surface water across tropical and subtropical regions. In Asia, the burden of melioidosis remains poorly defined because many cases are underdiagnosed, underreported, or clinically misclassified as tuberculosis, pneumonia, sepsis, or other bacterial infections. This narrative review examines the epidemiological distribution, transmission pathways, risk factors, vaccine and therapeutic developments, public health challenges, and future co

Aptamers and the CRISPR/Cas system have become the cornerstones of target detections due to their numerous advantages. Aptamers enable direct recognition of non-nucleic acid targets, such as pathogens and antigens, while CRISPR/Cas system drives signal amplification and rapid detection. The combined aptamer-CRISPR/Cas system can overcome the limitations of traditional target detection by realizing field-deployable, highly sensitive, specific, versatile, and rapid assays. Given the increasing number of different aptamer-CRISPR/Cas systems developed recently, particularly for infectious diseases

OBJECTIVES: Individuals with asthma remain inadequately controlled despite treatment with inhaled corticosteroid and long-acting β2-agonist (ICS/LABA) therapy. Single-inhaler triple therapy (SITT) combining ICS, LABA, and long-acting muscarinic antagonist (LAMA) offers a practical treatment escalation option. This study aims to assess the real-world effectiveness, safety, and adherence of SITT with budesonide/glycopyrrolate/formoterol fumarate in adults with uncontrolled asthma.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This multicentric, prospective, observational study was conducted across five centers in Ind

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis E virus (HEV) remains a major public health concern in China, with a significant increase in notified incidence over the last two decades. We aimed to examine trends and potential contributing factors associated with hepatitis E incidence and infection in Shanghai, a highly developed metropolis.
METHODS: Hepatitis E notified incidence data were retrieved from the National Notifiable Infectious Disease Reporting System (2004-2024). Six cross-sectional community-based serological surveys were conducted between 2001 and 2024, involving a total of 6,305 participants. Pathoge

BACKGROUND: Despite men having a higher burden of TB, they are frequently missed by TB services due to social, behavioural, and health system factors that limit healthcare access. In Uganda, where there are no gender-specific guidelines for TB, we implemented and evaluated a gender-specific intervention to find and treat men with TB.
METHODS: We conducted a quasi-experimental study comparing TB notifications before (January-June 2023) and after (July-December 2023) the intervention at both intervention (Gombe and Mityana hospitals) and control (Luwero and Kiboga hospitals) sites. The interven

Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are important pathogens of fish, causing chronic infections that are difficult to control in aquaculture. In this study, we evaluated the in vitro antimicrobial activity of twelve plant-derived compounds against six fish-associated NTM strains using a broth microdilution assay. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) ranged from 0.25 to >32 µg/mL. Our results demonstrated that cinnamaldehyde exhibited the strongest antimycobacterial effect, followed by sesamol and farnesol, while several other phytochemicals showed moderate activity and salicylic acid was ina

Tuberculosis (TB) is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.TB) infection. Although there have been significant advances in the treatment of M.TB infection, it still faces significant challenges. The gut microbiota is a highly complex ecosystem that plays an important role in regulating metabolism, immune regulation, and maintaining healthy balance in the human body. More and more studies have found that while gut microbiota regulates the immune regulation process of pulmonary TB through the "gut-lung axis," infection with M.TB can also affect the microbial stabil

Among 777,512 Indian adults with extrapulmonary tuberculosis, in-treatment mortality varied over tenfold by site, highest for tuberculous meningitis (adjusted odds ratio 12.48 vs. lymph node TB), miliary (5.17), and pericardial TB (3.86). Associations of HIV, diabetes, alcohol, and tobacco use with mortality varied across sites. Risk-stratified, comorbidity-aware care is warranted.

Disseminated osteoarticular TB is uncommon, and the occurrence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains impacting many skeletal locations in an immuno-competent individual is very rare. A 25-year-old male from a TB-endemic rural region is presented, having a three-month progression of worsening low back pain, subsequently accompanied by lower limb weakness. GeneXpert from both sites detected Mycobacterium tuberculosis that was resistant to rifampicin. The line probe assay detected resistance to rifampicin, high-level resistance to isoniazid, and resistance to ethambutol. After surgical procedures

BACKGROUND: Psychological violence (PCV), which includes verbal abuse, bullying, intimidation, sexual harassment and ethnic discrimination, is the most frequently reported form of workplace violence in health care and a well-documented correlate of burnout. Healthcare workers (HCWs) in infectious disease services face this psychosocial hazard alongside two further, structurally persistent conditions: impaired recovery through disturbed sleep, and the appraised risk of acquiring infection at work. How these demands combine with workers' personal psychological resources is not well understood.

BACKGROUND: The growing threat to health systems posed by extreme weather events (EWEs) disproportionately affects people living with HIV and tuberculosis disease in high-burden, low-resource settings. In Zimbabwe, for example, the 2023-24 El Niño-induced drought intensified food insecurity and reduced access to clinics and medication for such vulnerable populations. We aimed to conduct a formative evaluation to assess the perceived impact of climate change and EWEs on HIV and tuberculosis determinants and service delivery and identify potential climate-adaptive health-service strategies.

The biofilms of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis (Mtb) use extracellular DNA (eDNA) as a protective structural scaffold that shields resident bacteria from host immunity and antibiotics, promoting persistent infection. An FDA-approved DNase can partially hydrolyze eDNA but has limited affinity and nucleolytic activity against Z-form DNA (Z-DNA). After confirming the abundance of Z-DNA in Mtb biofilms, we develop Nano-NucleOTAC, a nano-nucleolysis targeting chimera that combines an eDNA-binding ligand (lactoferrin), a DNA intercalator (chloroquine) and DNase. Nano-NucleOTAC anchors to Z-DNA in Mtb H3
