BACKGROUND: An increasing incidence of oral cancer in women and younger adults with no habit of using tobacco has been noticed in recent years, with human papilloma virus (HPV) infection considered to be the major causative factor especially about tongue. Though role of HPV in oropharyngeal carcinoma is well established, studies in tongue cancers had yielded conflicting results.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We carried out histopathological evaluation of HPV induced epithelial changes (koilocytes, karyorrhectic cells, and apoptotic bodies) followed by assessment of the presence of HPV deoxyribonucle

BACKGROUND: Angina bullosa hemorrhagica (ABH) is a rare, benign, and underdiagnosed oral mucosal condition characterized by the sudden appearance of blood-filled blisters. It is often misdiagnosed or underreported due to its self-limiting nature and lack of specific markers. This case contributes to the growing recognition of ABH by documenting its recurrent manifestation at an unusual site (tongue). It is reported to highlight the importance of avoiding misdiagnosis and unnecessary investigations. Additionally, it contributes to the limited literature on ABH in Egypt and supports established

BACKGROUND: The cancer which appears in the mobile portion of the tongue is the most common neoplasm of the oral cavity. The objective of this study was to analyse oral tongue cancer epidemiology in a population of 610 patients diagnosed between 1990 and 2008 and detailed in the Tumour Registry of the Madrid region.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis based on the following variables provided in the Tumour Registry was achieved: age, gender, histology, stage, location, treatment. Descriptive and analytic statistics with these variables, using Pearson's Chi-square test to study the

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

BACKGROUND: Periostin is an extracellular matrix protein that participates in tissue remodeling and inflammation and may be related to cardiometabolic abnormalities. However, its association with metabolic and lipid disorders in newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients with dyslipidemia is poorly defined. This study evaluated serum periostin and its associations with glycemic, lipid, and atherogenic measures. We also performed exploratory molecular docking to investigate its predicted interactions with metformin and atorvastatin.
METHODS: This was a case-control study with 45

BACKGROUND: Human brucellosis is one of the most widespread zoonotic diseases that are presented with predominantly hematological manifestations. We aimed to evaluate the hematological findings of childhood brucellosis and to determine the predictive clinical findings and laboratory tests that might be related to hematologic involvement.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of children with brucellosis between 1 January 2005 and 31 December 2018. We compared predictive clinical and physical examination findings and laboratory tests in patients with and without hematologica

Proliferative verrucous leukoplakia (PVL) is a distinct type of oral leukoplakia which has the potential to enlarge or develop into new areas of leukoplakia coupled with areas of a warty surface texture. PVL is usually diagnosed from the fifth decade onwards and is more common in female patients. The most frequent sites involved tend to be gingivae, followed by buccal mucosa and lateral border of tongue. It is one of the oral potentially malignant conditions with a high risk of malignant transformation. It is important for general dental practitioners (GDPs) to identify such lesions to facilit

OBJECTIVES: To update the current evidence on the malignant transformation of oral leukoplakia (OL), including all studies published worldwide on the subject, selected with the maximum rigor regarding eligibility.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science and Scopus were searched for studies published before June-2024, with no lower date limit. The risk of bias was analyzed using the Joanna Briggs Institute tool for meta-analyses of proportions. We carried out meta-analyses, explored heterogeneity across subgroups and identified risk factors with potential prognostic value.

BACKGROUND: Squamous verrucous proliferative lesions of oral cavity can pose a diagnostic challenge for the general pathologist, especially on small biopsies. The superficial nature of incisional biopsies and inconsistent histologic terminologies used for these lesions contribute to often-discrepant clinical diagnosis, resulting in delayed treatment. This study aims to explore the proliferative squamous lesions of oral cavity, correlate biopsy & resection diagnoses, and evaluate possible reasons for discrepant diagnosis (if any).
DESIGN: A retrospective review of oral verrucous squamous lesio

In cases with an unanticipated difficult airway, retrograde intubation can be used as an alternative procedure for airway management when a fiber optic bronchoscope is unavailable. We here report a case of successful management of an unanticipated difficult airway following a failed intubation in a 34-year-old 54 kg male patient with carcinoma lateral border of tongue using retrograde intubation guided technique. Maintaining oxygenation and minimizing airway trauma should be the priority following a failed intubation. Decisions seeking alternative techniques following failed intubation are eas

Proliferative fasciitis (PF) is a rare pseudosarcomatous myofibroblastic benign tumor, a subcutaneous counterpart of proliferative myositis. Usually seen in upper extremities, no case has yet been documented in tongue or any other subsites in oral cavity. The present case becomes the first to be reported at this site as well as the first case of synchronous coexistent PF with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of tongue. The patient was 50 years male, having a polypoidal swelling at right lateral border of tongue with an ulcer adjacent to it. Histopathologically, the swelling was diagnosed as PF an

INTRODUCTION: Oral cancer surgery is complicated by the diverse nature of clinical and histopathological presentations that occur. Current National guidance recognises the significant role that surgical margin status plays in the overall survival of patients. Many other histopathological factors influence patient survival, the importance of which varies between the literature.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this prospective longitudinal study, all patients diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma who had primary surgical treatment under general anaesthesia were included. Surgery was performed by one

Oral hairy leukoplakia (OHL) is an Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) related lesion seen in severely immunocompromised patients especially, those with concomitant human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. It has been rarely reported in immunocompetent patients. OHL most often presents on the lateral border of the tongue as an asymptomatic, white, and corrugated plaque that does not rub off. With Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval, the University of Florida Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology Biopsy Service archives spanning 1994-2020 were queried. All cases of OHL affecting immunocompetent patien

Ectomesenchymal chondromyxoid tumour (ECT) is an extremely rare intraoral mesenchymal tumour. Most of these tumours have been identified on the anterior aspect of the dorsal surface of the tongue. ECT is difficult to diagnose because of its rarity. We report a case of ECT arising on the lateral border of the tongue in a 67-year-old woman. The tumour, measuring 20 × 10 mm in size, was surgically removed. Histopathologically, the tumour was composed of small polygonal cells arranged in sheets, with a myxoid or hyalinized stroma. The tumour boundary was clear; however, the tumour showed a multino

Oral Verruciform Xanthoma (OVX) is an uncommon benign lesion of the oral cavity. Most authors consider it to develop as a response to chronic local irritation. It usually presents as a pink, yellow or greyish flat mass occurring on the gingiva, alveolar ridge or hard palate. This paper reports to you the management of a case of Oral Verruciform Xanthoma occurring on the latero-ventral border of the tongue in a young male patient, which is a rare location for this lesion. It goes on to discuss the etiopathogenesis and clinical features of this rare lesion and emphasizes the importance of having

Tuberculosis is still one of the most prevalent diseases in developing countries like Nepal. However, due to the effectiveness of DOTS therapy, vaccination, and education, the prevalence of tuberculosis has fallen in recent years. Although the pulmonary and extrapulmonary tuberculosis, especially the tubercular lymphadenitis, is still very common in our country, the tuberculosis of oral cavity is an uncommon condition. We present a case of an elderly male who presented with the complaint of nonhealing ulcer of lateral border of tongue for 2-month duration which was masquerading as a traumatic

Cysticercosis is caused by larval stage of Taenia solium called cysticercus cellulosae. Cysticercosis most commonly infects skeletal muscles, subcutaneous tissues, brain and ocular tissue. On extensive search of literature, only around 64 cases of lingual cysticercosis have been reported till date. We report a case of cysticercosis of tongue in a 35-year-old male who presented with a painless, slowly growing swelling over the lateral border of tongue. Fine needle aspiration cytology revealed wavy integument of cysticercus cellulosae alongwith inflammatory cells. The findings were confirmed on

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is the most common malignant tumour of the major and minor salivary glands. Minor salivary glands are scattered in different areas of the oral cavity such as palate, retromolar area, floor of the mouth, buccal mucosa, lips and tongue, but so far, only a few lingual MEC cases have been documented in the literature and most of the studies have shown a predilection for base and dorsum of the tongue. We report a rare case of MEC involving the posterior-lateral border of the tongue.
