Observing passenger behavior and motion sickness development in autonomous vehicles - A driving study on public roads.

Highly automated vehicles (HAV) enable passengers to engage in non-driving related activities (NDRA), which are a known factor for increasing motion sickness (MS). Surveys show that NDRAs will not significantly change compared to manual driving, but they lack experiential insight. The study investigated NDRAs in automated versus manual driving, the influence of MS susceptibility, and the effect of self-chosen NDRAs on MS. In the online survey (N = 611), 52% of participants reported avoiding NDRAs to prevent MS. NDRA frequency showed a small but significant effect of MS susceptibility on certai

Exploring the Association between Postural Instability and Motion Sickness in Children and Adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: Motion sickness (MS) is a common condition that may impair daily functioning in children. While Sensory Conflict Theory (SCT) explains symptom provocation, it does not fully account for individual susceptibility. The Postural Instability Theory (PIT) proposes that persistent inability to maintain postural stability precedes and predicts MS. We aim to investigate the association between MS and postural stability in children and adolescents with MS. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective case-control study. SETTING: A quaternary referral university hospital. METHODS: 40 participants (aged 5-18

Anterior cingulate cortex glutamatergic projection neurons modulate motion sickness susceptibility via a cortico-vestibular circuit.

Motion sickness (MS) is a prevalent and debilitating vestibular disorder with limited therapeutic options, yet the cortical mechanisms governing individual susceptibility remain elusive. Using a biaxial rotation mouse model, we investigated the role of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) in MS by integrating morphology, calcium imaging, electrophysiology, cell ablation, chemogenetics, and optogenetics. Biaxial rotation induced hypothermia, anorexia, taste avoidance, locomotor hypoactivity, and gait incoordination. ACC pyramidal neurons exhibited enhanced activation and increased intrinsic exci

Model-based visual cue design for mitigating motion sickness: development, theoretical analysis, and experimental validation.

Autonomous vehicles are expected to exacerbate motion sickness (MS), since occupants may engage more in non-driving-related activities. Due to their availability and user experience, presenting visual cues of vehicle motion has become an effective MS mitigation approach. However, approaches to designing visual cues rely on empirical methodology and subjective feedback, while overlooking the mechanism link between cue design and MS mitigation effects. Considering both user-friendliness and systematic optimisation, a model-based visual cue design framework is proposed, adopting a computational m

Seasickness or Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting? A Retrospective Review of Patients Receiving Anesthesia at Sea Onboard the USNS Comfort.

INTRODUCTION: The USNS Comfort is a 1,000-bed hospital ship that provides full perioperative and surgical capabilities in a maritime environment. Patients may undergo surgery while the ship is pierside, anchored, or underway at sea. Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is a common anesthetic complication, but ship motion and sea state introduce an additional vestibular stimulus that is not captured by traditional PONV risk models. This study evaluated whether operating environment was associated with PONV after elective surgery aboard the USNS Comfort during a humanitarian mission. MATERI

Vestibular symptom burden in hyperemesis gravidarum: A scale-based comparison with migraine and motion sickness.

PurposeMotion sickness (MS), visually induced motion sickness (VIMS), hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), and migraine share a spectrum of symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and heightened motion sensitivity. These commonalities suggest a potential shared neurophysiological basis involving vestibular and central nervous system mechanisms. This study aimed to evaluate the association between HG severity, MS susceptibility, VIMS susceptibility, and migraine-related symptom burden from a specialized vestibular perspective.MethodsThis cross-sectional study included 1010 women with a history

Post-exposure effects of simulator sickness in motion-based flight simulators: a review of symptom duration and implications for flight fitness.

INTRODUCTION: The increasing use of modern motion-based flight simulators in military and civil aviation, despite their high relevance for training, is accompanied by the occurrence of simulator sickness. While acute symptoms during simulation are well described, the duration of post-exposure complaints and their significance for subsequent real flight capability have not yet been sufficiently investigated. The aim of this exploratory review was to summarise the available studies on the (persistence of) symptoms after flight-related simulator training. METHODS: A systematic literature search

Evaluating fluid-filled glasses for motion sickness symptom mitigation in a computer-assisted rehabilitation environment (CAREN).

BACKGROUND: Motion sickness arises from sensory conflict between visual, vestibular, and somatosensory inputs, causing nausea, dizziness, and vomiting. Non-pharmacological interventions are underexplored despite their potential for accessibility and safety. This study evaluated (1) Computer-Assisted Rehabilitation Environment (CAREN) as a novel tool to induce motion sickness and (2) the efficacy of fluid-filled motion sickness glasses which create an artificial horizon to counteract peripheral visual-vestibular mismatch and reduce symptoms. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial was conducted

Acetazolamide alleviates motion sickness by inhibiting inner ear carbonic anhydrase 2 and reducing endolymph volume.

Motion sickness is common in aerospace, aviation and maritime operations, and travel by vehicles or ships. Existing preventive and therapeutic drugs for motion sickness induce central nervous system (CNS)-related side effects; therefore, there is an urgent need to find new anti-motion sickness targets and to develop novel drugs with reduced adverse effects. In this study, we found that rotational stimulation significantly upregulated carbonic anhydrase 2 (CA2) expression in the inner ears of guinea pigs and mice. Pretreatment with acetazolamide (AZ), an inhibitor of carbonic anhydrase, effecti

On-road evaluation of sickness-less motion planning in automated vehicles: 'Head motion first' helps!

With the rapid advancement of automated driving, motion sickness (MS) has gathered significant attention from both academia and industry. Advanced sensing, decision-making, and control systems in autonomous vehicles offer promising opportunities to mitigate MS in next-generation transportation. Traditionally, objective metrics such as Motion Sickness Dose Value (MSDV) and Motion Sickness Incidence (MSI) are derived directly from vehicle motion states to quantify MS severity. However, these metrics often overlook the filtering or amplification effects of human body dynamics on the motion stimul
