Photobiomodulation, Transmucosal Laser Irradiation of Blood, or B complex as alternatives to treat Covid-19 Related Long-Term Taste Impairment: double-blind randomized clinical trial.

COVID-19 Related Long-Term Taste Impairment (CRLTTI) is a condition that can be expressed after COVID-19 contagion, lasting for months or even years, affecting the routine and quality of life of individuals. Participants expressing CRLTTI, with a minimum of 2 months, attested by PCR-RT test were assessed for taste and smell, and underwent experimental treatments in 6 distinct groups: Photobiomodulation (PBM) in tongue dorsum and lateral (660 nm, 808 nm, association of 660 and 808 nm), Transmucosal Laser Irradiation of Blood (TLIB)-ventral surface of tongue (660 nm), B complex supplementation,

Drug induced erythema multiforme of the oral cavity.

Drug induced erythema multiforme (EM) is a rare clinical entity which majorly involves the oral cavity. It commonly occurs due to intake of drugs such as NSAID'S, certain antibiotics, and anticonvulsants. It is characterized by rapidly rupturing vesicles leading to ill-defined erosions in the oral cavity and encrusted lip lesions. These lesions are usually difficult to differentiate from other vesiculo bullous and ulcerative lesions which would have a similar presentation and the absence of skin lesions can sometimes lead to misdiagnosis. Drug induced EM has an acute onset and is a self-limiti

Riga-Fede disease: A systematic review and report of two cases.

AIM: The term Riga-Fede disease has been used historically to describe traumatic ulceration that occurs on the ventral surface of tongue, buccal mucosa, gum or floor of the tongue in newborns and infants. It is most often associated with natal and neonatal teeth in newborns. The painful symptoms may be absent or acute, up to the point of preventing the baby from feeding. The aim of this work is to offer a description of the therapeutic solutions for the treatment of this pathological condition, with a review of the literature and the report of two cases. MATERIALS: A systematic review of the

Minimal Invasive Approach for Management of Lingual Swelling on Ventral Surface of Tongue.

Pediatric dentistry is a speciality of dentistry focusing mainly on oral health care of children. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment is key of a good treatment plan and effective results. Sometimes in infants, it is not possible to make a confirmatory diagnosis due to lack of cooperation, which is the biggest challenge of kids dentistry. In such cases, we need to take into consideration the psychological and physiologic aspect of child to find an alternative treatment plan, which is time saving and painless. Here, we present a unique case management of lingual swelling on the ventral surface

Lingual Linear Lesions: A Clinical Sign Strongly Suggestive of Severe Vitamin B12 Deficiency.

BACKGROUND: Lingual linear lesions (LLLs) are the oral linear lesions located on the dorsum, lateral borders, and/or ventral surface of tongue. It has been suggested that LLLs might be an early clinical sign of vitamin B12 deficiency. Here, a retrospective study was conducted to further investigate and validate the association between LLL and vitamin B12 deficiency. METHODS: Based on the clinical examination, patients with LLLs were enrolled and analyzed retrospectively. Data regarding clinical and laboratory features were obtained. Follow-up was done at least 6 months following appropriate s

Co-existence of oral intra-muscular lipoma and lobular capillary hemangioma: A rare case report.

INTRODUCTION: Intramuscular lipoma are benign mesenchymal soft tissue neoplasm of mature adipocytes that arises within the muscle. Oral intramuscular lipoma are more commonly seen on tongue. Lobular capillary hemangioma (LCH) on the other hand are common benign vascular neoplasms which are often confused with pyogenic granuloma. PRESENTATION OF CASE: In this paper we present a rare case of co-existence of oral intramuscular lipoma with LCH. A 65 year old male complains of swelling on the left chin region from past 4-5 years. On complete intraoral examination another mass was noted on ventral

Riga-Fede Disease Associated with Syndactyly and Oligodactyly: A rare Occurrence.

Background: Eruption of first primary tooth starts on an average at around six to seven months of age. Presence of teeth at birth or within a month after birth is considered rare. Natal teeth are those present in the oral cavity at the time of birth. These teeth can cause ulcers on the ventral surface of the tongue, lip, and the mother's breast characterizing the Riga Fede Disease. Exact aetiology of natal and neonatal teeth is still unclear. The treatment depends on its mobility of teeth as it is associated with the risk of aspiration or swallowing, whether the natal tooth is supernumerary or

Polymorphous Low-Grade Adenocarcinoma of the Palate: A Rare Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma (PLGA) has been known as a comparatively less aggressive malignant tumor that predominantly occurs in the minor salivary glands. It has presented as a painless, slow growing tumor in the oral cavity. It has been reported to occur rarely in the palate and the prognosis of this lesion is far better than adenocarcinoma as the regional metastasis would be very minimal. A clear difference between the biologic behaviors of adenocarcinoma and PLGA has been reported in literature. CASE PRESENTATION: A 63-year-old female reported at our institute wit

Solitary nodular lesion of tongue- a rare entity.

The solitary, nodular lesions of the oral mucosa present a diagnostic dilemma to the dentist with their analogous presentation. The lesions that appear on the tongue, a soft muscular organ are distinct and even rarer with varied manifestations. Oral mucosa presents lesions of the tongue in all age groups that may range from a small nodular swelling and ulcer formation in an infant of a few days old to an ulcer or a lesion in a 70-year-old. The reason for the appearance of an ulcer may be trauma to the soft tissues in an infant may be due to the presence of natal teeth to the presence of a shar

Successful treatment of a symptomatic L5/S1 discal cyst by percutaneous CT-guided aspiration.

PURPOSE: High levels of metabolism and oxygen consumption in most adult murine ocular compartments, combined with exposure to light and ultraviolet (UV) radiation, are major sources of oxidative stress, causing DNA damage in ocular cells. Of all mammalian body cells, photoreceptor cells consume the largest amount of oxygen and generate the highest levels of oxidative damage. The accumulation of such damage throughout life is a major factor of aging tissues. Several multiprotein complexes have recently been identified as the major sensors and mediators involved in the maintenance of DNA integri

Native fluorescence of oral cavity structures: an experimental study in dogs.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare the fluorescence of different areas of the buccal mucosa of dogs. BACKGROUND DATA: Native fluorescence occurs in many animal and plant tissues following excitation by ultraviolet (UV) light. The fluorescence spectrum characteristic of a given tissue may vary with changes in tissue composition and organization. Hence, this optical phenomenon provides a reliable and minimally invasive diagnostic tool for examining tissues in normal and pathological conditions. The oral cavity contains a variety of structures, including the lips, tongue, palate, an

Distribution of MUC1 in the normal human oral cavity is localized to the ducts of minor salivary glands.

The change in expression of MUC1 from health to disease forms the basis of its use as a potential disease marker. Previous attempts at isolating MUC1 from normal, healthy human oral mucosa have, however, drawn conflicting conclusions as to its presence. Furthermore, when MUC1 was detected in the oral glycocalyx, it was not clear which cells were synthesising it. We examined human oral glycocalyx using pooled buccal smears from 50 normal individuals. Following isopycnic density centrifugation and membrane extraction with octyl glucoside and saponin, MUC1 was detected with the polyclonal antibod

Perfusion cells for studying regional variation in oral-mucosal permeability in humans. I: Kinetic aspects in oral-mucosal absorption of alkylparabens.

PURPOSE: To evaluate regional differences in permeability of human oral mucosa. METHODS: Newly designed perfusion cells were used for the investigation. The cells were applied to 5 different sites, i.e., dorsum of tongue, ventral surface of tongue, labial mucosa, floor of mouth and buccal mucosa of human volunteers. Model drugs used were methyl-, ethyl-, propyl- and butylparaben, which are passively absorbed from oral mucosa and have different lipophilicities. Biexponential disappearance profiles of the alkylparabens were analyzed kinetically using a two-compartment linear open model. RESULT

Regional variation in oral mucosal drug absorption: permeability and degree of keratinization in hamster oral cavity.

The regional permeability of oral mucosa to salicylic acid was investigated in vivo in hamsters along with histological variations, especially the degree of keratinization. Histological sections from six regions, i.e., sublingual mucosa, buccal mucosa, dorsum of tongue, ventral surface of tongue, labial mucosa, and cheek pouch mucosa, were prepared to assess the degree of keratinization. The area under the plasma concentration-time curve of salicylic acid following the administration of salicylic acid to the oral mucosa with a film dosage form and the thickness of stratum corneum of each site
