A recently developed algorithm for the diagnosis of adverse drug reaction (ADR) was used to investigate the quality of evidence in reported cases of ADRs to 1% gamma benzene hexachloride (GBH), a popular scabicide and pediculicide currently under suspicion as a cause of central nervous system (CNS) toxicity, especially in children. Of the 53 reported cases of alleged toxicity, 37 were associated with lindane insecticide (greater than 1% GBH), which is not a pharmaceutical preparation. In view of the excellent results we had obtained using KETOTIFEN in the treatment of respiratory allergies, we decided to carry out a study of its protective action in cases of allergies of purely alimentary etiology; that is, in patients symptoms only appeared after the ingestion of certain foodstuffs. It is shown that apple allergens are probably proteins and that they can be extracted in an active form only if reactions with phenolic compounds present in apple are inhibited. This is accomplished by incorporating chelators and solid polyvinylpolypyrrolidone in the extraction medium. Phenol, commonly used as a preservative, should not be added. During 1976-78, 33 S. aureus strains were isolated from chickens suffering from dermatitis and septicemia, omphalitis, pneumonia, arthritis and tenosynovitis; and from a commercial balanced chicken food. All the strains were classified into the biotype B of Hájek and Marsálek. Twenty-nine (87.8%) strains could be classified into Sato et al biological type 4 although they differed from it in its ability to grow at 45 degrees C. The remaining 4 strains differed from the others because they failed in producing hemolysis in bovine and ovine blood agar, egg yolk reaction and splitting of Tween 80.

By tests on six patients with recurrent urticaria it could be demonstrated that it was caused by an allergy against Peru balsam. Different reaction types seem to have been responsible for the occurrence of the urticaria. Cross reactions with different other substances, mainly luxury food and stimulants, play a particular part.

A pilot study of the effect of D-penicillamine in multiple sclerosis (MS) was undertaken because of D-penicillamine's activity against RNA neurotropic viruses, because it is effective against the auto-immune disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and because both viruses and autoimmunity have been implicated in multiple sclerosis. Depending on their physiochemical properties, foreign substances appear to a more or less substantial degree in mother's milk. The decision as to whether a drug may be administered during nursing is particularly difficult in the case of antibiotics. Due to the development of resistance and sensitization only a few of these drugs are allowed. A nursing stop should only be ordered when a dangerous drug is used with genuine indication and without a possible alternative. As a rule, those drugs which are believed to involve a certain danger for newborn, can be replaced by other nonhazardous drugs.

In order to extend previous investigations of adverse reactions to foods performed at this institution, 68 children, aged 5 mo to 15 yr, were studied.
