The relationships of different histologic types of cutaneous malignant melanoma to occupational and recreational sunlight exposure, habits of clothing, sunburn histories, and use of sunscreening agents were examined in a case-control study of 507 patients and 507 matched controls in Western Australia. Psoriasis of the hands may be triggered by work, especially in occupations involving physical trauma or contact with irritants. When limited to the hands and in absence of other typical lesions, diagnosis can be difficult particularly when coexisting with contact eczema. It is necessary to establish diagnostic criteria which help to establish a relationship between clinical manifestations and noxious stimuli at work. Prevention should be directed to early identification of cases and adequate preemployment physical examinations in order to avoid permanent disability.

This retrospective study was done to review the epidemiology, etiology, method of treatment, and results of repairs of biliary tract injuries following routine cholecystectomy. Fourteen patients have been treated at our hospital for biliary tract injuries during a 10-year period (January 1974-December 1983). One injury occurred at our institution. The logistics of early management have been studied in a series of 1161 patients with head and/or spinal injuries, who were admitted to hospital in NSW in 1977-78. Outpatient treatment of burns and scalds has been evaluated at the Paediatric Emergency Unit of the Children's Hospital in Trieste. 183 children aged 0-15 years were treated by occlusive topical medication; in all cases control after three and twelve months was performed. Twenty-three pediatric patients with blunt esophageal foreign bodies underwent flexible endoscopic removal without general anesthesia. No object was in place longer than 14 days. In 18 patients the foreign body was successfully removed, while in five patients the object was dislodged into the stomach. All of the latter patients were encountered early in the series. No complications were encountered in any patients. This technique appears to be a safe alternative to other proposed methods of blunt esophageal foreign-body removal.

We have reviewed 113 cases of electrical burns treated at the Cook County Hospital Burn Center during the past 10 years. There were 3265 acute burn admissions during this period. the incidence of electrical burns being 3.5 per cent. Low-voltage electrical burns occurred in 82 of the 113 patients (73 per cent). These were caused mostly by household electricity supplies, occurred in children, and were preventable. Arc burns of the perioral region were allowed to heal spontaneously. The epidural compression secondary to genitourinary malignancies is relatively uncommon. Many different approaches are advocated for management of iatrogenic (operative) ureteric injury. We herein report our experience with 28 ureteral injuries in 26 patients. In six patients, seven injuries were recognized at the time of the initial operation; four end-to-end anastomoses and three ureteroneocystostomies were successfully performed. Over the past 47 years (1937 to 1984), a total of 127 patients with esophageal perforation or rupture were evaluated at Duke Medical Center or the Durham Veterans Administration Medical Center. The entity of postoperative acute cholecystitis has striking features that demand special attention. Osteonecrosis of the femoral and humeral heads is a serious complication of therapy for Hodgkin's disease and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Peripheral arterial emboli that result from bacterial endocarditis may be silent or catastrophic. Cardiac surgical intervention may prevent embolism, but the guidelines for timing of intervention are unclear. An accepted approach is to intervene only if two episodes of peripheral embolism occur.
