Intraocular foreign body injuries (IOFB) can lead to a number of intraocular pathologies; the visual results depend on the mechanism of the injury, the type of foreign body and the subsequent complications. The presence of intraocular cilia (eye lashes) following penetrating injury or surgical intervention is uncommon. In the present paper, we present a case of a 58-year-old woman with a history of eye trauma and a perforated corneal wound in the left eye that occurred 50 years ago. On the ophthalmological exam we noticed in the anterior chamber a straight linear extension, resembling cilia, e

INTRODUCTION: Post-traumatic osteomyelitis (OM) is often caused by Staphylococcus aureus. However, occasionally, it is caused by an infection with a rare bacterium. A case of OM caused by Aeromonas hydrophila was first reported in 1975. Since then, only nine cases have been reported, making it a rare disease. Here, we report a case of rare A. hydrophila OM that developed following open tibial fracture (classified as Gustilo-Anderson 3B) caused by an injury in a river.
CASE REPORT: The patient was a 50-year-old male who got injured in a river and was diagnosed with open tibial fracture. Debrid

Treatment of post-traumatic complex bone infection is very challenging. The two principal bone reconstruction approaches are the single-stage vascularized bone graft technique and the two-stage induced membrane technique (IMT). Here we introduce a modified 2-stage induced membrane technique (MIMT) for complex long bone infection with a major bone defect and a concomitant severe soft tissue lesion. The 2-stage procedure consists of bone debridement, placement of a PMMA spacer and soft tissue reconstruction with a thoracodorsal artery perforator free flap ("Tdap") at stage 1. At stage 2, the tho

INTRODUCTION: Treatment of infected nonunion of the distal juxta-articular tibia is a challenge due to a short distal fragment, deformity, thin soft-tissue envelope, and active infection. There is still no consensus on the approach that is able to maximally salvage the limb and ankle function.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Infected juxta-articular nonunion of the distal tibia was managed with two Ilizarov techniques, monofocal compression (MC) used in 12 patients and bifocal compression-distraction (BCD) in 6 patients. The choice of the technique depended on the size of the postresection defect, ≥3 c

OBJECTIVES: Surgical fusion through posterior instrumentation and pedicle screw placement is a long established method for stabilising traumatic spinal fractures. Post-surgical complications include infection and metal work failure, the most common aetiology of which is pedicle screw fracture. Metal work failure rates vary from 15% to 60%. Research relating to factors which predict metal work failure in post-traumatic thoracolumbar spinal fixation is lacking. This study aimed to identify potential risk factors for metalwork failure in patients who had posterior fixation for traumatic thoracolu

INTRODUCTION: The anterior knee pain is the most common post-operative complaint associated with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) using bone patellar tendon bone graft. It has been attributed to various factors such as loss of terminal extension, infrapatellar branch neuroma, and also due to the bone harvest site defect itself. Bone grafting of the defects in the patella and tibia has been shown to decrease anterior knee pain. At the same time, it also prevents post-operative stress fractures.
SURGICAL TECHNIQUE: Numerous bone pieces were produced in the knee joint as a result

BACKGROUND: Wound bed preparation is an important concept in clinical practice and is related to adequate debridement. The use of proteolytic enzymes is an established method of enzymatic wound debridement, especially in hard-to-heal ulcers that are unresponsive to normal healing procedures and progress. The TIME framework (tissue, inflammation/infection, moisture balance, and edge of wound) offers an appropriate strategy to eliminate resistance to healing, as well as maximizing the healing process. Maintenance debridement, as opposed to sporadic debridement, may be proposed in preserving an a

Isolated post-traumatic cerebral mucormycosis represents an extremely rare and severe disease. A case of isolated cerebral mucormycosis infection caused by Lichtheimia spp. in a 21-year-old multi-trauma patient is presented. The patient was hospitalized in the intensive care unit and underwent craniotomy due to brain injuries. Two weeks following the initial procedure, pus drained from the surgical wound was microscopically examined and cultured, yielding Lichtheimia spp. Imaging showed parietal, temporal and frontal abscesses at the right side. The patient was commenced on amphotericin B and

INTRODUCTION: Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT), also called vacuum-assisted closure, is an adjunctive therapy used to manage open wounds that apply subatmospheric pressure to the wound surface. The therapeutic effects of NPWT are exerted by stabilizing the wound environment, increasing blood flow, and macro-deformation of wounds that initiate granulation tissue formation.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 28-year-old Caucasian male who developed a giant non-resolving hepatic abscess secondary to a gunshot wound (GSW) to the upper right abdomen. The abscess was successfully treat

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Calcific myonecrosis (CM) is a rare, benign post-traumatic sequela which is often challenging to differentiate from soft tissue tumors. Infected CM is recalcitrant and sometimes requires invasive treatment despite its benign nature. We present a case of infected CM in which MRI and 201Tl scintigraphy proved useful for diagnosis and intralesional debridement with prolonged placement of a suction tube allowed for successful treatment.

Mucormycosis is a rare, emerging angioinvasive infection caused by ubiquitous filamentous fungi. In recent decades, an increase in cutaneous or post-traumatic mucormycosis has been reported. We describe two cases of post-traumatic wound infections with Mucor circinelloides, a mucor species only rarely reported as a cause of post-traumatic mucormycosis. Often considered lethal, management required a combination of medical and surgical therapies to achieve a favorable outcome in both cases.

Background and Objectives: Wound healing is commonly associated with critical bacterial colonization or bacterial infection, which induces prolonged inflammation, resulting in delayed re-epithelialization. An appropriate wound dressing requires a humid environment, which also functions as a barrier against bacterial contamination and will accelerate a regenerative response of the wound. Silver sulfadiazine (SSD) is used to prevent wound infection. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is an extracellular matrix component involved in tissue regeneration. This retrospective study was conducted to evaluate the ef

INTRODUCTION: High body mass index (BMI) and wound drainage following total joint arthroplasty (TJA) can lead to wound healing complications and periprosthetic joint infection. Silver-embedded occlusive dressings and negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) have been shown to reduce these complications. The purpose of this prospective trial was to compare the effect of silver-embedded dressings and NPWT on wound complications in patients with BMI ≥ 35 m/kg2 undergoing TJA.
METHODS: We conducted a randomized control trial of patients who had a BMI > 35 m/kg2 and were undergoing primary TJA betwe

OBJECTIVE: Maggot debridement therapy (MDT) is an emerging procedure involving the application of sterile maggots of the Dipteran species (commonly Lucilia sericata) to effect debridement, disinfection and promote healing in wounds not responding to antimicrobial therapy. Data on MDT in sub-Saharan Africa (including Nigeria) are scarce. This study aimed to use medicinal grade maggots as a complementary method to debride hard-to-heal necrotic ulcers and thereby promote wound healing.
METHOD: In this descriptive study, we reported on the first group of patients who had MDT at Aminu Kano Teachin

INTRODUCTION: Injuries around the elbow pose a challenging problem for orthopaedic surgeons. The complex bony architecture of the joint should be restored and the thin soft tissue envelope needs to be handled with meticulous care. Elbow instability is a complication seen after dislocations and fractures of the elbow and remains a treatment challenge. The purpose of this study was to provide subjective and objective results following the surgical treatment of unstable elbow dislocations with an external hinged fixation technique.
METHODS: Forty-six consecutive patients with complex trauma of t
