Thirty-nine patients with pertrochanteric fractures were treated with the Küntscher trochanter nail. Six were males and 33 females. Their mean age was 76 years. Excellent or good results of treatment were recorded in 25 cases, and good union of the fracture was noted in 19 patients within 4 months and in 15 cases as early as 2 months after the operation. The primary mortality rate was of the same order as with other methods of nailing, 15% in this series. The operation is easy and short, and is suitable at least for stable pertrochanteric fractures of elderly patients.

Spontaneous pneumopericardium is a relatively rare event, although cases have been recorded over the past 130 years. Many were associated with malignancy, trauma, infection or as a complication of recent surgery. Attempts at surgical resolution have been infrequent and survival extremely rare. Between September 10, 1973 and May 20, 1975, 94 selected patients were treated with fast neutron beams generated by bombarding an "intermediate" beryllium target with 21 MeV deuterons. The clinical material included: 58 patients with head and neck cancers; 27 patients with cerebral glioblastoma multiforme; and 9 patients with a variety of other neoplasms. Of the 67 patients treated only with neutron beams, 31 received two increments per week and 36 received three increments per week. The calculated doses in most patients were 1800 rad n gamma (neutrons + gamma components) delivered in 6 weeks.

Denervation injuries in baboons were used to define the time course of the hyperkalemic response to succinylcholine. Half-peak increase in serum potassium (2.78 mEq/l) occurred 8.4 days following injury. Peak increase (5.5 mEq/l) appeared 14 days after injury. However, changes in potassium levels begin as early as four days after injury. Succinylcholine or other depolarizing muscle relaxants should not be used after the fourth day following an injury or denervation that involves two or more limbs.

Of 161 traumatic renal injuries analyzed for the period 1962-1975, 154 were due to blunt trauma and seven to penetrating wounds (5 gunshot wounds and 2 stab wounds). All the latter were treated by surgical exploration. Fifty-five patients had moderate injuries and 20 had severe injuries from nonpenetrating wounds and were managed without operation except for 10 cases that required surgical intervention. Twenty-six women were admitted to National Women's Hospital with complications following therapeutic abortion at the Auckland Medical Aid Centre, during its first year of operation. A new synthetic absorbable suture, a copolymer of two simple hydroxy acids, glycolic acid and lactic acid, was evaluated in a laboratory and clinical study for its usefulness in ophthalmic surgery. Five patients with pelvic fractures were studied arteriographically and all were found to have injury to one or both superior gluteal arteries, in addition to other injuries. In three of the five patients no adjacent bony damage was seen on plain pelvic roentgenograms. A possible explanation for this finding is given in terms of anatomic relationships within the pelvis. The importance of early arteriography in the diagnosis management of blunt pelvic trauma is emphasized.

Serum cholesterol, triglycerides, phospholipids, and lipoprotein levels were studied by electrophoresis in 43 trauma patients with multiple fractures of the lower extremities and pelvis. This study deals with 524 cases of uterine cervix (except stade IV cases) completely treated at the Foundation Curie with esclusive radiotherapy from from 1962 to 1968.
