Pediatric patients with persistent obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) after adenotonsillectomy often have additional sites of upper airway obstruction such as the tongue base or larynx. Sleep endoscopy and cross-sectional, dynamic imaging can be used to direct the surgical management of persistent OSA. The tongue base is one of the most common sites of obstruction in children with persistent OSA, especially for patients with Trisomy 21. Lingual tonsillectomy, tongue suspension, and/or posterior midline glossectomy may be used to address lingual tonsil hypertrophy and tongue base obstruction. Epiglo

UNLABELLED: The purpose of this investigation is to demonstrate a multimodality approach to the surgical management of obstructive sleep apnea. Hypoglossal nerve stimulator (HGNS) implantation has been a life-changing procedure for many patients with obstructive sleep apnea. When activated it produces tongue protrusion via electrical stimulation of the hypoglossal nerve. This advances the lingual tonsil, making the pharynx diameter greater. Unfortunately, for some patients the electrical stimulation required is too high and awakens the patient. In such cases the patient's fragmented sleep is n

OBJECTIVE: Little is known about age-related variations in sites and grade of sleep-dependent airway obstruction in children with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) or obstructive sleep-disordered breathing (oSDB). The objective was to compare sites and grade of obstruction on drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE) across different age groups of surgically naïve children with OSA or oSDB.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed for surgically naïve children aged 0-18 years with OSA/oSDB who underwent DISE from July 2021 to August 2023. Participants were categorized into: infants (aged 0-1

BACKGROUND: The tongue exhibits significant individual variability in terms of shape, colour, and surface texture. Due to its location, it is easily accessible for medical examination, although often overlooked. This is due to the inadequate number of studies assessing the morphology of the tongue in the healthy population. Determining the range of normalcy allows for the definition of tongue pathology requiring further diagnostics. The aim of this study is to assess differences in the morphological structure of the tongue in healthy individuals based on existing literature. Morphological stru

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the preferred imaging modality for oropharyngeal cancers (OPCs), but it has difficulties distinguishing between small OPCs and unilateral tonsil hypertrophy. We hypothesized that surgeon-performed transoral ultrasound (US) could be used to accurately detect T-stage OPCs. We performed a single-center prospective diagnostic accuracy study including patients with suspected or biopsy-verified OPCs during outpatient appointments. All patients were offered transoral US and MRI. If transoral US could not be tolerated by the patient, transcervical US was performed.

The oral mucosa contains distinct tissue sites with immune niches capable of either immunogenic or tolerogenic responses. However, immune cell compositions within oral mucosal tissues at homeostasis have not been well-characterized in human relevant tissues. Non-human primates (NHP) are a major model for the human immune system and oral anatomy, and therefore improved understanding of NHP oral immune cell populations can provide important insights for studying disease pathologies and developing therapies. Herein, we characterize immune cell types of three sites within the oral cavity (buccal,

Background and Objectives: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a sleep-related respiratory disorder that affects between 5% and 20% of the population. In obstructive sleep apnea, lingual tonsillar hypertrophy (LTH) has been suggested as a contributing factor to airway blockage. Objectives: The aim of this work is to demonstrate the polysomnographic indices and their values in OSA patients with LTH before and after the surgical intervention. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted on eighteen patients endoscopically diagnosed as having LTH, with the main complaints being snoring, sleep apne

BACKGROUND: BACKGROUND: The frequency of ectopia of thyroid gland among all types of dysgenesis varies from 30 to 70%, its most common localization is the root of the tongue. Otorhinolaryngologists, oncologists, pediatricians can take lingual ectopia for hypertrophy of the lingual tonsil or fibroma of the tongue root, which leads to unreasonable surgical treatment. Thyroid scintigraphy plays a key role in the diagnosis of ectopia.
AIM: AIM: To assess the etiological structure of congenital hypothyroidism (CH) and demonstrate the clinical course in patients with ectopic thyroid tissue in the r

This study aimed to evaluate the influence of lingual tonsil (LT) volume measured using a three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction volume rendering program on clinical parameters and polysomnography (PSG) results. A total of 100 patients who underwent PSG, computed tomography (CT), and allergy test from April 2016 to April 2020 were randomly selected. LT volume was measured using an imaging software program that enables 3D reconstruction of CT images. PSG parameters were analyzed by dividing the subjects into two groups according to LT volume (each 50 people). Based on the medial volume of 0.863

OBJECTIVES: The histological origin of base of the tongue (BOT) carcinomas is still elusive, and most studies have been focusing on the lingual tonsil. In this study, we sought to identify the existence of the squamous-columnar junction (SCJ) in the human Von Ebner's glandular duct and explored the potential of that in forming squamous cell carcinomas in BOT.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The specific genomes of BOT carcinoma were acquired and screened out by The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database analysis. The 4-nitroquinoline-1-oxide (4-NQO)-treated mouse model was used to explore the transformat

OBJECTIVE: The hyperplasia of the lingual tonsil is a rare and at the same time potentially dangerous change in the area of the upper respiratory tract. The pathogenesis of the lingual tonsillar hyperplasia is still largely unknown. In this study, we investigated if there is a compensatory lingual tonsil hyperplasia after tonsillectomy.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 300 patients were examined consecutively in the ENT clinic of the Hannover Medical School. In the context of indirect laryngoscopy, the lingual tonsil, the visibility of the larynx and its subregions were assessed according to a scheme. T
