OBJECTIVE: Enlargement of the lingual tonsils is being increasingly recognized as a not uncommon and treatable cause of obstructive sleep apnea, particularly in patients with Down syndrome who have undergone palatine tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy. We have recognized an increasing number of patients who are obese and have obstructive sleep apnea with enlarged lingual tonsils. OBJECTIVE: To determine if degree of lingual tonsil hypertrophy (LTH) correlates with pharyngeal reflux.
DESIGN: Prospective.
METHODS: Patients with flexible laryngoscopic evidence of LTH were included. Degree of LTH was graded mild, moderate, or severe by two otolaryngologists blinded to pH study results. Three-sensor pH study results were correlated to LTH grade.

BACKGROUND: : Cystic lymph node metastases have been associated with tonsil cancer. A subset of oropharyngeal cancers contain human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA. The clinical and virologic associations of cystic nodal metastasis in head and neck cancer (HNSCC) were investigated.
METHODS: : A retrospective review of patients undergoing neck dissection between 2002 and 2004 identified patients with cystic lymph node metastases. Clinical and pathologic information was recorded. The presence of HPV DNA was analyzed using in situ hybridization in a subset of patients.

The LMA-CTrach combines the features of the Intubating Laryngeal Mask Airway with a fiberoptic system and a screen for visualization of the airway. Local pathology, such as lingual tonsillar hyperplasia, may obstruct the view of the airway leading to unanticipated difficult intubation. We present two cases of failed intubation with the LMA-CTrach in patients with lingual tonsillar hyperplasia. In both cases, the LMA-CTrach maintained adequate ventilation, giving time to prepare alternative strategies.

Tonsils form a first line of defence against foreign antigens and therefore play a key role in immunity. Since documented information about ovine tonsils is limited, a study was performed in which the morphological characteristics and the volume of lymphoid tissue present in each ovine tonsil were determined. The tonsils of five adult healthy sheep were examined histologically and the volumes were estimated using the Cavalieri method. The association between recurrent thyroglossal duct cyst (TGDC) and obstructive lingual tonsil hypertrophy has not previously been discussed. We present the case of a 7-year-old child whose medical and surgical course was complicated by these synchronous factors. The aim of this report is to present the risk factors for recurrence of TGDC and the unique challenge that concurrent lingual tonsil hypertrophy and airway obstruction present to management of patients.

The microstructural and ultrastructural features of the equine lingual tonsil were studied in five young horses.
