Baseline Adjustment and Normalisation in Neurite Outgrowth Assays: A Simulation-Based Comparison of Analytical Methods.

BACKGROUND: When baseline neurite lengths differ between experimental groups, analytical methods may detect, miss or overstate treatment effects. We assessed how commonly used methods recover a baseline-adjusted treatment effect. NEW METHOD: We developed a simulation framework comparing endpoint comparison, change score, percentage change, percent-of-control normalisation and ANCOVA. A known 8 μm treatment effect was simulated under varying baseline imbalances and baseline-growth relationships, with additional analyses of sample size and baseline measurement error. RESULTS: In the worked exa

Acute Limb Ischemia: Medicare and Medicaid Reimbursement Gaps Threaten Sustainability of Care.

OBJECTIVE: Acute limb ischemia (ALI) is a vascular emergency associated with high morbidity and mortality, prolonged hospitalization, and substantial resource utilization. However, contemporary data evaluating the financial sustainability of ALI care across insurance types remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate hospitalization costs, reimbursement, profitability, and contribution margin for operative ALI care stratified by insurance status and revascularization strategy. METHODS: A retrospective review of patients admitted with ALI at a quaternary medical center (2016-2024) was performe

Group Differences in Reported Jitter and Shimmer Are Partly Associated with the Harmonics-to-Noise Ratio.

OBJECTIVES: Jitter and shimmer are often compared between groups that also differ in the harmonics-to-noise ratio (HNR). This study examined how much of a reported group difference in these measures is associated with the HNR difference rather than with a difference in cycle-to-cycle perturbation. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of an existing database against a simultaneously recorded electroglottographic (EGG) reference. METHODS: Sustained /a/, /i/, and /u/ at normal pitch and /a/ at low and high pitch were analyzed from the Saarbrücken Voice Database (1554-1734 speakers per condition

Association Between Edentulism and Postural Stability Among Middle-Aged and Older Adults: A Nationwide Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Maintaining postural stability is crucial for healthy aging, and impaired balance increases the risk of falls and functional decline. Edentulism is common among older adults and may influence neuromuscular coordination and systemic health, yet its association with balance ability remains underexplored. METHODS: This study was based on cross-sectional data from the 2015 of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). A total of 13 047 participants aged ≥ 45 years were included in the analysis. Basic standing balance ability was assessed using standardized physical p

Reducing participant burden of ESM-based monitoring of mood disorder onset through variable sample size EWMA.

The exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) procedure is a promising statistical process control technique for monitoring experience sampling method (ESM) data to detect imminent depressive episodes in real time, allowing for timely interventions. However, asking participants to complete multiple ESM questionnaires per day - relevant studies used a daily sample size of five or ten questionnaires - over extended periods is burdensome. We propose a variable sample size (VSS) EWMA approach in which the daily sample size depends on the extremity of participants' ESM scores on the previous day

Representation learning from similarity networks improves the prediction of disease-associated microRNAs.

BACKGROUND: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play critical roles in disease mechanisms and represent promising biomarkers and therapeutic targets, yet experimentally identifying disease-miRNA associations remains costly and incomplete. Existing computational methods often rely on known disease-miRNA associations during similarity construction or representation learning, potentially leading to information reuse between training and evaluation and limiting generalization to unseen diseases or miRNAs. To address these limitations, we propose SimNetRLMDA, an association-independent representation learning frame

Designing acceptable, feasible and engaging social prescribing pathways: the case of connecting from general practice to 'Golf for Health'.

BACKGROUND: Globally social prescribing (SP) is receiving increasing attention for its role in health and social care. There is little evidence and a call for consideration on a seldom considered and hugely important aspect of SP schemes - the connection process (identification, enhancing likelihood of behaviour change, and connection). This was a novel study aiming to design an acceptable, feasible and engaging process for connecting individuals from general practice to a free golf programme in Scotland. METHODS: A two-phase participatory approach drawing on the double diamond process of des
