Short-term complications following distal humerus open reduction and internal fixation.

BACKGROUND: Distal humerus fractures (DHFs) account for around 2% of all adult fractures. Since nonoperative strategies often lead to loss of motion and disability from prolonged immobilization, open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) is a commonly employed first-line treatment for reconstructable DHFs and can yield satisfactory outcomes. Surgical recovery, however, is not without complications, with reported rates up to 30%. Prior studies often report ORIF in pooled or comparative settings, leaving a gap in isolated ORIF outcomes. Therefore, this study aims to analyze short-term postopera

Superficial Tumor Location and Adiposity as Independent Predictors of Postoperative Wound Complications in Sarcoma Resections of the Thigh.

INTRODUCTION: Soft tissue sarcoma (STS) resections of the thigh have high rates of wound complications, but the effect of tumor depth and surrounding tissue composition on wound risk is not fully understood. We aimed to determine whether skin-to-tumor distance and regional thigh adiposity independently predict postoperative wound complications. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 125 patients who underwent thigh STS resection from 2013 to 2025. Preoperative MRI or CT was used to measure (1) the shortest skin-to-tumor distance in the quadrant with the greatest tumor burden and (2) average thi

Successful Management of Infected Widely Dehisced Wound Using Progressive Tension Sutures: Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Surgical wound dehiscence is a life-threatening postoperative complication mainly related to a failure of wound healing that leads to psychosocial stress in patients and their caregivers. Here, we report a successful management of widely dehisced wound using progressive tension sutures in low-resources setting. CASE REPORT: A 35-year-old grand multipara woman underwent caesarean section for fetal distress. On postoperative day five, she developed a surgical site infection and the wound dehisced. After two failed attempts of dehisced wound closure she was referred to our hospital.

Personalized Strategies for Head and Neck Reconstruction Using Pedicled Flaps.

Background/Objectives: In recent decades, free flaps have emerged as the gold standard for head and neck reconstruction. However, their use is contraindicated in some cases due to advanced age and/or comorbidities. In such patients, a pedicled flap may be considered. The aim of this observational study was to evaluate strategies for head and neck reconstruction using pedicled flaps in the era of free flaps. Furthermore, the complication rate was analyzed. Methods: Patients who underwent head and neck reconstruction with pedicled flaps were included. The following flaps were considered: the pec

Interrupted versus continuous fascial closure after emergency midline laparotomy: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Wound dehiscence after emergency midline laparotomy is a severe complication linked to high morbidity and mortality. While continuous closure is standard in elective surgery, its superiority is not established in high-risk emergency settings, where patient factors like infection and malnutrition can compromise healing. This systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of interrupted versus continuous fascial closure techniques after emergency midline laparotomy. METHODS: A comprehensive search of PubMed, Scopus

Electrospun PVA-PCL/HA nanofiber scaffolds containing mupirocin for surgical wound healing in Sprague Dawley rats.

Surgical site infections (SSIs) and wound dehiscence are significant postoperative complications that prolong hospital stays and increase treatment costs thus highlighting the need for effective wound dressing options to support healing and minimize scar formation. This study seeks to produce biodegradable electrospun scaffolds for initial burst release and subsequent prolonged release of bioactive substances to enhance wound closure after surgical procedures. Five nanofibrous scaffolds were fabricated using keratin, PCL-PVA blend with CoQ10, mupirocin, and hyaluronic acid at a voltage of 25 -

Free Flap Reconstruction of Xylazine-Associated Wounds: A Retrospective Review.

BACKGROUND: Xylazine is a veterinary sedative that is added to illicit fentanyl to enhance its effects. Xylazine-associated wounds differ from those found in patients who inject other drugs. They are larger and frequently involve deeper structures, such as bone. The outcomes of reconstruction using free tissue transfer are not well understood. METHODS: All consecutive free flap reconstructions of xylazine-associated wounds at a tertiary care center in the northeast US between January 2021 and December 2024 were retrospectively reviewed. Data were stored in a HIPAA-compliant REDCap database.

Review on the impact of smoking on wound healing following facial procedures.

Optimal aesthetic and functional outcomes in facial surgery depend on effective wound healing. Although the impact of cigarette smoking on postoperative healing has been widely studied, its specific influence in the context of facial procedures remains debated. This review evaluates how smoking compromises wound healing and increases the risk of postoperative complications by synthesizing current evidence on its influence in facial surgical procedures. This scoping review included original observational studies (cross-sectional, case-control, and cohort) published in English that examined asso

Difficult to treat purulent pericarditis - where does full sternotomy stand? A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Purulent pericarditis is a subtype of acute pericarditis with a high mortality even when adequately treated. Standard therapy is a combination of antibiotics and drainage, which can be more or less invasive. This is a case report of a patient with purulent pericarditis where cardiac surgery via sternotomy for thorough debridement and lavage was required for complete infection control. CASE PRESENTATION: A 41-year-old man with a history of injected and inhaled drug use was admitted with a large pericardial effusion, and 700 mL of pus was percutaneously drained. After being starte

Management and Outcomes of Complications Related to BioZorb Use in Breast-Conserving Surgery: A Retrospective Single-Center Case Series Analysis.

BACKGROUND: BioZorb (Hologic, Inc) is an implantable fiducial marker used in breast-conserving surgery. Since the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved BioZorb in 2012, numerous adverse effects have been reported, prompting the FDA to issue a warning about potential risks on February 27, 2024. BioZorb was subsequently recalled, and on October 25, 2024, the FDA classified the recall as a Class 1, the most serious category, because of the risk of severe injury or death associated with the device. Limited research is available on the management of BioZorb-related complications. METHODS:
