Infections following medical leech therapy for rhizarthrosis: a case series.

Medical leech therapy is used as an alternative treatment for chronic pain conditions, including rhizarthrosis. During leech therapy, the leech releases a variety of bioactive substances that are intended to alleviate symptoms and relieve pain. The procedure is often described as a 'natural' and risk-free form of naturopathic treatment. However, medical leech therapy is associated with risks and potential complications, among which infection is one of the most common. According to the literature, these infections may be caused by Aeromonas spp. as well as other pathogens. Treatment typically c

Preoperative Antibiotic Administration Before Distal Radius Fracture ORIF and Postoperative Outcomes: A Propensity-Matched Cohort Study.

PURPOSE: Surgical site infections following certain hand surgery procedures are inherently low; however, the utility of prophylactic antibiotics in such scenarios remains a point of controversy. This study aimed to evaluate postoperative infection rates among patients who were prescribed antibiotics before surgery compared with those who were not following distal radius fracture (DRFx) repair surgery, using a large multi-institutional database. The study hypothesis was that the administration of preoperative antibiotics would not impact the rate of postoperative infection. METHODS: A retrospe

Full-Endoscopic Spine Surgery Enables High Rates of Pathogen Identification after Short-Term Antibiotic Therapy in Pyogenic Spondylitis.

INTRODUCTION: Prompt and accurate identification of pathogens is essential for effective treatment of pyogenic spondylitis. However, conventional non-surgical methods, such as blood culture and percutaneous needle biopsy, have limited sensitivity and reliability. This multicenter study investigated whether specimen collection during full-endoscopic spine surgery (FESS) is more useful than the conventional diagnostic modalities. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed data for 53 patients diagnosed with pyogenic spondylitis across three participating institutions between January 2021 and April 20

Extending prophylactic antimicrobial use beyond 48 h postoperatively fails to reduce surgical site infections and other healthcare-associated infections in patients undergoing colorectal resection: a Propensity Score Matching study.

BACKGROUND: It is controversial whether antibiotic should be used prophylactically 48 h after colorectal resection. Hence, the association of prophylactic antimicrobial (PA) use beyond 48 h postoperatively with the incidence of surgical site infections (SSI) and other healthcare-associated infections (HAI) in patients receiving colorectal resection surgery was evaluated. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on 2691 patients who underwent colorectal resection between March 1, 2023, and December 31, 2025. Patients were categorized into the non-PA beyond 48 h postoperatively group (n

Evaluation of Antimicrobial Effectiveness of a Chlorhexidine Gluconate-Impregnated Intravenous Catheter Dressing.

INTRODUCTION: Standard intravenous catheter securement dressings permit microbial regrowth at the insertion site, which can contribute to hospital-onset bloodstream infections. We evaluated the antimicrobial activity of a chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG)-impregnated intravenous dressing. METHODS: Antimicrobial performance was assessed using an in vitro assay against eight microorganisms after 168-hour exposure to CHG dressings and two randomised, controlled studies in healthy adults comparing CHG and placebo dressings. Skin flora were measured at baseline and after 24, 72, and 168 hours on skin

Direct vision reservoir placement in the space of Retzius via a secondary lateral suprapubic incision in patients with a scarred pelvis: a single-center experience.

Ectopic or high submuscular insertion of the inflatable penile prosthesis reservoir minimizes complications associated with placing a reservoir in a retroperitoneal pelvic space scarred from previous surgery. A separate secondary lateral suprapubic incision allows direct visualization during reservoir placement and provides controlled access to the intended anatomical plane. This single-center retrospective study evaluated the safety and feasibility of 3-piece inflatable penile prosthesis reservoir placement in the Space of Retzius (SOR) via a secondary lateral suprapubic incision in 90 patien

Clinical and Treatment-Related Factors Associated with Neutrophil Recovery After Bloodstream Infection in Acute Leukemia: A Competing-Risk Analysis.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Neutrophil recovery after bloodstream infection (BSI) in acute leukemia is clinically important, but evaluation is complicated by early death and recurrent infectious episodes. We assessed clinical, treatment-related, and microbiological factors associated with recovery while accounting for death as a competing event. METHODS: This retrospective single-center cohort included 205 microbiologically documented BSI episodes in 101 adults with acute leukemia treated between 2020 and 2025. Neutrophil recovery was defined as an absolute neutrophil count >500/µL after BSI onset

Multiple sclerosis relapse following gamma knife radiosurgery for meningioma in a patient treated with natalizumab: case report.

OBJECTIVES: We describe a case of a patient with multiple sclerosis (MS) stable on natalizumab who developed widespread gadolinium-enhancing lesions and clinical relapse seven and eight months after gamma knife radiosurgery (GKRS) for left cerebellar convexity meningioma. We explore how increased blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability post-GKRS could potentially interfere with the lymphocyte anti-trafficking effect of natalizumab and result in new central nervous system (CNS) inflammation distant from the radiation site. METHODS: Comprehensive analysis of the patient's chart, brain and spine
