This study explores the relationship between deprivation and patient and professional delays in presentation and treatment of oral and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma. The cohort comprised 559 consecutive previously untreated patients presenting to the Regional Maxillofacial Unit, Liverpool from 1 January 1992 to 31 December 2002. All had primary surgery. A new external radiotherapy system has been developed for head and neck cancer and a case with T2 oral floor carcinoma treated with this system is presented in this report. The seeds of the main Italian carob varieties, Latinissima and Tantillo, and those of two selected accessions of Latinissima were evaluated in terms of yield, rheological properties, and sugar composition of the endosperm (LBG). The separation of the seed components in Latinissima and its seedlings yielded meanly 52.2% gum, 17.4% germ, and 30.5% tegument, whereas Tantillo furnished a lower gum yield (38.5%) and a higher yield of tegument (45.8%). The viscosity of 1% LBG aqueous solutions was measured at different shear rates (3-60 rpm), pH values (3.0-6.0), and temperatures (10-60 degrees C).

OBJECTIVE: Sublabial approach has been widely used as the standard technique for transsphenoidal pituitary surgery. But it has several possible drawbacks, such as; postoperative flat nose deformity, hypesthesia of upper gum, and feeding difficulty until 2 to 3 weeks after surgery. As an alternative, an endonasal approach was adopted for patients who had large nostrils, such as white or acromegalic patients. In patients with small nostrils, especially oriental people, it requires an additional tension release incision that leaves a definitely visible scar at the base of nose.

We assessed oral cancer mortality data in São Paulo to study trends of the disease and its distribution by areas of the city. We standardized death rates by gender and age group, and also supplied complementary information regarding oral cancer incidence. We herein report a case of a pulmonary metastatic tumor with an endobronchial growth pattern. A 75-year-old female was operated on for pulmonary metastasis which originated from a malignant melanoma of the upper gum. A 3D-simulation model made with a milling system was applied to HDR-brachytherapy. The 3D-simulation model is used to simulate the 3D-structure of the lesion and the surrounding organs before the actual catheterization for brachytherapy. The first case was recurrent prostatic cancer in a 61-year-old man. The other case was lymph node recurrence of a 71-year-old woman's upper gum cancer. In both cases, the 3D-simulation model was very useful to simulate the 3D-conformation, to plan the treatment process and to avoid the risk accompanying treatment.

We present whole-head magnetoencephalographic recordings from a patient suffering from trigeminally triggered left-sided hemifacial convulsions. The authors report a case of congenital epulis in the lower gum of a new born female. This rare benign tumor of the newborn is histologically characterized by the granular aspect of its cells. It occurs more frequently in females than in males. Differential diagnosis mainly concerns Abrikossoff tumor whose histogenesis and evolution are different. The distinctive features of epulis are the presence of a fusiform cell component and the negativity of the granular cells for PS100.

A case of oat-cell carcinoma arising in the pericardium of a 51-year-old woman is described. The patient had multiple nodes; the largest was 2 x 1 cm. Two years later the patient presented with a tumor on her lower gum; this measured 2 mm and had similar characteristics to the previous one. The immunohistochemical study showed strong positivity for neuron-specific enolase. From review of the literature, it may be concluded that this is the first report of oat-cell carcinoma occurring in the pericardium.

The goal in treating intraoral cancer is to obtain tumor control with preservation of shape and function of oral cavity.
