Complications of Genital Enlargement Surgery.

INTRODUCTION: The objective of genital enlargement surgery is to increase length and/or girth for cosmetic reasons; however, newer techniques have been recently reported to be associated with only minor complications in a small percentage of patients. AIM: We aim to report the severe complications of penile augmentation surgery seen at a referral center and describe their subsequent management. METHODS: Institutional review board approval was obtained. We reviewed our prospectively collected database for all patients who presented with complications of genital enlargement surgery from 2002-2

Advanced Techniques for Treating Juxtarenal and Pararenal Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms: Chimneys, Periscopes, Sandwiches and Other Methods.

The complex aortic anatomy of patients who present with juxtarenal and pararenal abdominal aortic aneurysms requires advanced techniques to ensure adequate coverage and complete exclusion of the aneurysm. Parallel stent grafting is one option for endovascular repair of complex aneurysms. Using chimneys, periscopes, or snorkels, it is possible to extend the length of the proximal seal zone and maintain perfusion to branch vessels. Because readily available stent grafts and covered stents are used, this technique is highly adaptable to each patient's unique anatomical challenges. However, the co

Penile Erosion in a Paraplegic Man With Indwelling Urinary Catheter and Scrotal Edema.

The chronic use of urinary indwelling catheters is a common practice in the setting of long-term patient care and is associated with numerous complications. More awareness about urogenital trauma from urinary catheterization is needed, as it is as common as symptomatic urinary tract infections. There are a number of preventable measures that can be taken to decrease the risk of mechanical trauma to the urethra and glans penis caused by chronic catheterization. We present a case of a 27-year old paraplegic male needing a chronic indwelling catheter that acquired ventral penile erosion while bei

Umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells on scaffolds facilitate collagen degradation via upregulation of MMP-9 in rat uterine scars.

BACKGROUND: Severe injuries of the uterus may trigger uterine scar formation, ultimately leading to infertility or obstetrical complications. To date, few methods have adequately solved the problem of collagen deposition in uterine scars. Umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) have shown great promise in clinical applications. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of a scaffold/UC-MSCs construct on collagen degradation and functional regeneration in rat uterine scars following full-thickness excision of uterine walls. METHODS: In order to establish a rat m

Ureteral Reconstruction in Goats Using Tissue-Engineered Templates and Subcutaneous Preimplantation.

Repair of long ureteral defects often requires long graft tissues and extensive surgery. This is associated with complications, including a lack of suitable tissue and graft site morbidity. Tissue engineering may provide an attractive alternative to the autologous graft tissues. In this study, ureteral repair using (preimplanted) tubular collagen-Vicryl templates was evaluated in a new goat model. Tubular templates were prepared from tubularized Vicryl meshes and 0.7% type-I collagen (length = 6 cm, inner diameter = 6 mm, wall thickness = 3 mm). In total, twelve goats were used and evaluated a

Intradialytic creatine supplementation: A scientific rationale for improving the health and quality of life of dialysis patients.

The CK/PCr-system, with creatine (Cr) as an energy precursor, plays a crucial role in cellular physiology. In the kidney, as in other organs and cells with high and fluctuating energy requirements, energy-charged phospho-creatine (PCr) acts as an immediate high-energy source and energy buffer, and as an intracellular energy transport vehicle. A maximally filled total Cr (Cr plus PCr) pool is a prerequisite for optimal functioning of the body and its organs, and health. Skeletal- and cardiac muscles of dialysis patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are depleted of Cr in parallel with the d
