[Tenckhoff catheter placed in bladder. Case and review].

BACKGROUND: Stage 5 kidney disease requires renal function replacement therapy, either through hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. Among the complications related to the placement of a peritoneal dialysis catheter are the mechanical ones, that include flow obstruction, peritoneal fluid leak, hernias, inadequate catheter position or injury to an intra-abdominal organ. A rare complication is the accidental catheter placement in the urinary bladder. Bladder perforation is favored when there is incomplete emptying of the bladder, a surgical history, and alterations in the lower urinary tract. A c

Urinary Retention in Orthopaedic Surgery: An Evidence-based Algorithm.

Postoperative urinary retention (POUR), the inability to urinate spontaneously after surgery, affects up to 43% of orthopaedic patients and can lead to pain, bladder injury, urinary tract infections, increased healthcare costs, and delayed rehabilitation. POUR arises from decreased neurologic signaling, reduced bladder sensation and contractility, or mechanical obstruction. Risk factors include advanced age, prior urinary retention, comorbidities (eg, benign prostatic hyperplasia, diabetes, renal dysfunction), anesthesia type, perioperative opioid use, and catheterization. Despite its prevalen

Can preoperative transurethral catherization reduce the risk of urethral stricture after endoscopic treatment of the prostate?

Urethral strictures are a well-known complication following endoscopic treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Although the exact cause remains unclear, repetitive instrument movement and pressure-induced ischemia are likely contributing factors. While the incidence seems lower after enucleation compared to transurethral resection of the prostate, it remains important to prevent this iatrogenic complication. A small randomized trial suggested a benefit from preoperative urethral dilatation, though findings were constrained by limited sample size and follow-up. Similarly, studies compa

Non-Antibiotic Prevention of Catheter Mechanic and Septic Complications in Patients with Long-Term Indwelling Catheters: a Crossover Prospective Study Involving L-Methionine.

Bacterial antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major public health concern in modern society caused by bacterial changes that impair the efficacy of infection-treating drugs. Non-antibiotic techniques are critical for controlling the antimicrobial resistance concern because they provide a means of alleviating symptoms without needing antibiotics. This prospective study aims to determine whether administering L-methionine reduces mechanical and bacterial problems associated with long-term indwelling urinary catheters. The trial focused on administering only L-methionine for a three-month period

Time-efficient implantable catheters for draining malignant ascites in terminal cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: There is a need for an improved version of the implantable catheter for malignant ascites in the abdominal cavity. OBJECTIVE: New implantable catheters have been developed that drain ascites from the abdominal cavity to the bladder by applying pressure. Based on pigtail catheters, these newly designed catheters have silicone membranes and apertures. METHODS: Experimental instruments controlled flow rates and water level to observe changes of the activation pressure and its cycle time along flow rates and turns of catheters. Furthermore, various normality tests, difference tests a

Transurethral resection of the prostate stricture management.

For more than nine decades, transurethral resection of the prostate remains the gold standard for the surgical treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms due to benign prostatic obstruction. The occurrence of urethral strictures after transurethral resection of the prostate is one of the major late complications and has been reported as the leading cause of iatrogenic urethral strictures in patients older than 45 years who underwent urethroplasty. Although several postulations have been proposed to explain the urethral stricture after transurethral resection of the prostate, the exact etiology

Same sized three-way indwelling urinary catheters from various manufacturers present different irrigation and drainage properties.

BACKGROUND: The three-way indwelling urinary catheter (IUC) is used for continuous bladder irrigation and is considered the cornerstone for clinical treatment of patients with macroscopic hematuria. Although there seems to be a logical relationship between catheter size and efficacy of irrigation and drainage, we often observe relevant variations in these parameters between different brands of catheters available on the market. The aim of this study was to compare the mechanical properties of different models of latex and silicone three-way catheters in an in vitro setting that resembles clini

Penile Erosion in a Paraplegic Man With Indwelling Urinary Catheter and Scrotal Edema.

The chronic use of urinary indwelling catheters is a common practice in the setting of long-term patient care and is associated with numerous complications. More awareness about urogenital trauma from urinary catheterization is needed, as it is as common as symptomatic urinary tract infections. There are a number of preventable measures that can be taken to decrease the risk of mechanical trauma to the urethra and glans penis caused by chronic catheterization. We present a case of a 27-year old paraplegic male needing a chronic indwelling catheter that acquired ventral penile erosion while bei

A scoping review of important urinary catheter induced complications.

This study presents a scoping review of the literature on the morbidity and mortality associated with several common complications of urinary catheterization. Data gathered from the open literature were analyzed graphically to gain insights into the most important urinary catheter induced complications. The results reveal that the most significant catheter complications are severe mechanical trauma (perforation, partial urethral damage and urinary leakage), symptomatic bacterial infection, and anaphylaxis, catheter toxicity and hypersensitivity. The data analysis also revealed that the complic
