Complications of transpedicular stabilizations of thoraco-lumbar burst fractures are presented on the basis of literature review and own experiences. Unstable thoraco-lumbar burst fractures create the most difficult biomechanical conditions for a stabilizer. A literature review was done to estimate the effectiveness of vertebral body height restoration and its maintenance, the effectiveness of transpedicular grafting, the fusion rate and the implant-related complications rate. Transpedicular stabilization systems demonstrate a marked stiffness in all directions which is greater than in the cas

BACKGROUND: Allograft-prosthesis composite reconstruction after periacetabular resections allows for bony union and internal repair, restoring bone stock for further revisions; the allograft-prosthesis composite can be shaped according to the pelvic resection to reconstruct the complex bone anatomy. Recently, endoprosthetic reconstruction has become one of the most frequently used options to restore large periacetabular bone defects. However, a prosthetic reconstruction impairs pelvic bone stock preservation and often takes a long time to manufacture. Allograft reconstructions, on the other ha

The surgical treatment of proximal humerus fractures, though common, is associated with surprisingly high complication rates upward of 34%. Obtaining a reduction and placing a stable fixation can be challenging because many fractures treated surgically are comminuted and occur in osteoporotic bone. Nevertheless, innovations in technique and implant design are mitigating some failures. These innovations include the use of fibular strut allograft and other fixation adjuncts, the correct placement of calcar screws and other locking fixation, and having a systematic approach to reduction and intra

BACKGROUND: The optimal modality to surgically treat significant bone loss of distal femur remains inconclusive. The objectives of the present study were to assess the mechanical performance of nonvascularized fibular graft (NVFG) with locking screw fixation in distal femur fixation construct by finite element analysis and to retrospectively describe the outcomes of the present technique in clinical cases.
METHODS: Four constructs which the fractured femur was stabilized by LCP-DF alone, dual plating, LCP-DF combined with NVFG, and LCP-DF combined with NVFG (LCP-DF-NVFG-S) with locking screw

INTRODUCTION: A stable fixation of highly unstable proximal humerus fractures remains challenging and complication rates, especially secondary varus dislocation, remains high. Different techniques of double plate osteosynthesis have been suggested for the treatment of complex proximal humeral fractures as they are well established for other fractures. The aim of this study was to evaluate an operative technique using an angular stable lateral plate supported by a one-third tubular plate positioned anteriorly at the lesser tuberosity for unstable proximal humeral fractures.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the clinical application of the Fixin mini 1.9 to 2.5 system for the treatment of long bone fractures in cats. We proposed that the Fixin mini system would successfully stabilize long bone fractures in cats with a healing time and complication rate similar to those previously reported for feline fractures using other locking bone plate systems.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Medical records and radiographs of cats with long bone fractures stabilized with the Fixin mini 1.9 to 2.5 system were retrospectively reviewed. Signalment, body we

BACKGROUND Nonunion occurs to approximately 10% of people who suffer from distal femoral fracture, which can be induced by other diseases and medical interventions. CKD and subsequent renal osteopathy are regarded as risk factors for nonunion. Internal fixation is the most widely applied medical procedure to treat distal femoral fracture, the efficiency and stability of which are improved by emerging biological materials. Besides traditional screws and plate, titanium cages and intramedullary nails have been introduced lately to repair nonunion and large bone defects resulting from it, which i

BACKGROUND: Recently, many kinds of cages for cervical fusion have been developed to avoid the related complications caused by tricortical iliac crest graft. The existing literature has reported the excellent clinical efficacy and superior fusion rate. However, various types of cages have their own disadvantages. Which bone graft material is the best choice for cage with the fewest complications? At present, there is still no conclusion.
METHODS: By reviewing patients with 1 to 2-level cervical degenerative disease in our hospital with a novel cage made of allograft or polyetheretherketone (P

Treatment of complex osteoporotic distal femur fractures with the Less Invasive Stabilization System (LISS) has been associated with high complication rates. The aim of this study was to investigate the biomechanical competence of two different techniques of augmented versus conventional LISS plating. Unstable distal femoral fracture AO/OTA 33-A3 was created via osteotomies in artificial femora simulating osteoporotic bone. Three study groups, consisting of 10 specimens each, were created for fixation with either LISS plate, LISS plate with additional polylactide intramedullary graft, or LISS
