Oral Verruciform Xanthoma: A Series of 212 Cases and Review of the Literature.

Verruciform xanthoma (VX) of the oral cavity is an uncommon, reactive lesion of unknown etiology. In this study, we present a large series of VX with analysis of demographics, clinical appearance, histologic presentation and extensive review of literature. To the best of our knowledge, this is the largest series of oral VX reported to date. Following IRB approval, all cases diagnosed as VX found in the archives of the University of Florida Oral Pathology Biopsy Service (1994-2018) were included. Patient age, gender, location, clinical appearance, clinical impression, and duration of each lesio

Small cell carcinoma of the floor of mouth: Difficulties of a therapeutic choice.

INTRODUCTION: With only 14 cases and as many different therapeutic strategies reported in the literature, small cell carcinoma of the oral cavity remains a real challenge with diagnostic and therapeutic pitfalls. CLINICAL CASE SUMMARY: A 65-year-old patient with an active smoking habit consulted for a painful oral pelvic mass. The staging confirmed the diagnosis of small cell carcinoma of the anterior floor of mouth, classified as cT3N0M0. By analogy with pulmonary locations, medical management combining chemotherapy specific for small bronchial cell carcinoma (carboplatin-etoposide) and radi

NUT Midline Carcinoma of the Sublingual Gland: Clinical Presentation and Review.

NUT midline carcinoma (NMC) is a rare and aggressive disease encountered in the midline of the head and neck or mediastinum. Due to its sparse incidence and subtle pathologic features, we aim to increase knowledge and awareness for this pathologic entity. We present an exemplary case of a young, healthy male presenting with oral cavity pain and cervical lymphadenopathy. This patient was initially diagnosed with an unspecified, highly aggressive sublingual gland malignancy and underwent locoregional resection with free flap reconstruction however suffered a rapid local recurrence and widely ext

Papillary variant of squamous cell carcinoma arising on the gingiva: 61 cases reported from within a larger series of gingival squamous cell carcinoma.

Papillary squamous cell carcinoma (PSCCA) is a rarely occurring variant of squamous cell carcinoma (SCCA) with distinctive exophytic and papillary features and a more favorable prognosis than conventional SCCA. The larynx is the most commonly affected site in the head and neck. The oral cavity, oropharynx, sinonasal tract, and nasopharynx are also affected. Within the oral cavity cases have been reported on the alveolar ridge, oral mucosa, floor of the mouth, ventral tongue, and rarely other areas. We identified 61 cases of gingival PSCCA within the parameters of a larger study of 519 cases of

Oral and neck examination for early detection of oral cancer--a practical guide.

Cancer of the head and neck region presents a challenge since, unlike other areas of the body, the boundaries are not always easy to delineate. The functional morbidity associated with head and neck cancer and its treatment are considerable. Head and neck cancer is described as cancer of the lip, mouth, tongue, tonsil, pharynx (unspecified), salivary gland, hypopharynx, larynx and other. Oral cancer refers to cancers of the lip, tongue, gingivae, floor of the mouth, palate (hard and soft), maxilla, vestibule and retromolar area up to the anterior pillar of the fauces (tonsil). When patients pr

[Neurocutaneous flaps applied on head and neck surgery: Anatomic study of feasibility using superficial cervical plexus branches].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility of neurocutaneous flaps for head and neck surgery using the cervical superficial plexus branches. METHODS: Anatomic study on cervical superficial plexi (focusing on the great auricular and cervical transverse nerves) of five fresh specimens, which were injected with green colored latex. RESULTS: A constancy of anatomic landmarks has been observed with little inter-individual variability. The cervical superficial plexus branches were easily isolated, their length and course not varying much. Each cervical superficial plexus nerve is accompanied by a peri

Sarcomatoid (spindle cell) carcinoma of the head and neck mucosal region: a clinicopathologic review of 103 cases from a tertiary referral cancer centre.

Sarcomatoid carcinomas are biphasic tumors proven to be monoclonal dedifferentiated forms of conventional squamous carcinomas. This study evaluates their clinicopathologic characteristics in head and neck mucosal sites and the problems in distinguishing them from other spindle cell tumors. A total of 103 cases with a confirmed diagnosis of sarcomatoid carcinoma accessioned in the pathology department of a tertiary referral cancer centre over a period of 7 years (2004-2010) were studied. An algorithm used for their diagnosis is presented. Ages of the patients were 22-90 years (median 53 years),

A schwannoma of the hypoglossal nerve presenting as a malignant tumour of the oral floor.

OBJECTIVES: We describe a case of an unusual schwannoma of the hypoglossal nerve presenting clinically as a malignant tumour of the floor of the oral cavity. CASE REPORT: A 77-year-old woman presented with a bulky tumour located between the left anterior floor of mouth and the ventricular portion of the tongue. The tumour was ulcerated, painful and presented with a necrotic aspect. Neurological examination revealed a mild left hemiparesis of the tongue. MRI and CT showed a circumscribed tumour with a broad necrotic centre. The patient underwent a transoral excision of the tumour under general

Medial sural artery perforator flap for intraoral reconstruction following cancer ablation.

In oral cavity reconstruction, the fasciocutaneous flaps of the distal extremities have always been preferred to any other kind of flap because of their thinness and pliability, which makes them adaptable to different areas in the oral cavity. The radial forearm flap is frequently considered the first choice for intraoral reconstruction, but the disadvantages of donor site morbidity include sacrificing a major artery to the hand and leaving a conspicuous donor site scar. The search for another primarily thinned skin flap as an alternative has led to the application of the medial sural artery p

[The central island tongue flap for the reconstruction of the anterior floor of the mouth].

BACKGROUND: There are several techniques described for the reconstruction of the anterior floor of mouth after tumour surgery. Here, we point out the advantages of the central island tongue flap for this indication. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We report on 20 patients with medium sized defect in the anterior floor of mouth, which was reconstructed with the central island tongue flap. Besides this surgical technique, we discuss the results of oral rehabilitation after a follow-up period of at least 3 months. RESULTS: There was now flap necrosis or loss, and the median time for flap formation was le

Comparison of the efficacy and tolerability of solifenacin succinate with or without previous use of trospium chloride.

Overactive bladder syndrome (OBS) is described as urinary urgency with or without incontinence, usually with increased daytime frequency and nocturia in the absence of another identifiable pathological process. Nowadays and despite other alternative therapies, the mainstay of OBS is still the pharmacological approach, mainly with anti-muscarinic drugs. To compare the efficacy of a 30-day solifenacin succinate (5 mg OD) treatment with or without previous medication with trospium chloride, a prostective open, two-arm, parallel group study was conducted for 5 weeks in 40 patients with OBS. The pr

Transition to Medicare Part D: an early snapshot of barriers experienced by younger dual eligibles with disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Cleft lip and palate (CLP) is among the most common congenital anomalies, necessitating complex, multidisciplinary care from infancy through adolescence. Caregivers often turn to online resources, particularly YouTube, for supplemental guidance on presurgical management, feeding techniques, and long-term care. However, the reliability and educational value of such freely available video content remain uncertain. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Cochrane, and relevant grey literature from 2014 to 2026. Eligible studies were cross-sect

Management of malignant sublingual salivary gland tumors.

The majority of tumors of the sublingual gland are malignant, with adenoid cystic carcinoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma being the most frequent. Many other malignant tumor types have also been reported. The sublingual gland anatomically is not a unit organ and while it is described anatomically as being confined to the anterior floor of the mouth, salivary tissue may be located laterally along the submandibular duct and posterior floor of the mouth. Diagnosis should be suspected when any thickening or raised lesion presents in this area and a biopsy performed to confirm malignancy before plan

Reconstruction of early lower gingivo buccal complex lesions using floor of mouth advancement augmented with hyoglossus release.

The surgical treatment in early cancers of the lower gingivobuccal (GB) complex involves wide resection of the buccal mucosa and GB sulcus with or without marginal mandibulectomy. To reconstruct this defect we endeavour to describe a method of advancement of the lateral floor of mouth and tongue to provide pliable, vascularised tissue to bridge the mucosal defect and achieve tension free, primary closure whilst preserving maximum tongue mobility and maintaining adequate mouth opening, thus offering an elegant and simple solution to the problems of reconstruction in early lesions of the lower g

Surgical variables affecting swallowing in patients treated for oral/oropharyngeal cancer.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative swallowing function may be influenced by a number of treatment variables; this study examines the relationship of various treatment factors to measures of swallow function. METHODS: Swallowing was examined with the modified barium swallow procedure in 144 patients surgically treated for oral or oropharyngeal cancer 3 months after healing. Univariate and multivariate correlations were used to examine the relationship between swallowing function and treatment. RESULTS: Percent tongue base resected and total volume resected were most often correlated with swallowing fu
