Perception of Lebanese Obstetricians Toward COVID-19 Vaccination During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding.

INTRODUCTION: In response to the drastic complications that resulted from Coronavirus-19 (COVID-19) infection, vaccines were developed to contain its rapid spread. However, concerns were raised regarding the safety of COVID-19 vaccines for pregnant and breastfeeding women. This study aimed to explore the perceptions and practices of Lebanese obstetricians regarding the COVID-19 vaccine, highlighting the barriers to recommending it. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was implemented using a questionnaire. Descriptive statistics in the form of frequencies and percentages were utilized to get an o

Immune Hyperactivation in Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV)-Driven T-cell Lymphoproliferation: A Pediatric Case of Hemophagocytic Syndrome.

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) triggered by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated T-cell lymphoproliferation represents a rare, aggressive complication in immunocompetent children, often mimicking lymphoma and leading to cytokine storm and multiorgan failure. This case report describes a six-year-old girl presenting with fever, cervical mass, hepatosplenomegaly, and cytopenias. Diagnostic evaluation included imaging (CT scans), serology, EBV polymerase chain reaction (PCR) (viral load 545,238 copies/mL), lymph node biopsy showing cytotoxic T-cell proliferation, and serial labs confirm

A Rare Case of Palbociclib-Induced Pancolitis: Clinical Insights and Literature Review.

Cyclin-dependent kinase 4/6 (CDK4/6) inhibitors are now standard therapies for hormone receptor-positive (HR+), HER2-negative advanced breast cancer. While generally well tolerated, their toxicity profiles differ, with palbociclib and ribociclib more commonly associated with hematologic toxicity and abemaciclib with gastrointestinal adverse effects such as diarrhea. Severe gastrointestinal complications such as colitis remain rare, particularly with palbociclib. We report a 65-year-old woman with metastatic HR+ breast cancer who presented with a two-week history of watery diarrhea (10-12 episo

Adding pembrolizumab to standard neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy is not associated with increased postoperative complications after esophagectomy in ESCC: a retrospective analysis from a prospective database.

BACKGROUND: The current standard of care for locally advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) consists of neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) followed by curative surgery. Recent single-arm trials have demonstrated that incorporating immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) into neoadjuvant regimens improves pathological complete response (pCR) rates. However, the comparative risk of postoperative complications between nCRT and neoadjuvant chemoimmunoradiotherapy (nCIRT) followed by esophagectomy in patients with ESCC remains unclear. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed E

Long COVID: Deep single-cell immunophenotyping and machine learning reveal a general signature for fatigue.

BACKGROUND: The post COVID-19 condition, commonly referred to as “Long COVID” (LC), is a constellation of long-lasting and debilitating symptoms following acute SARS-CoV-2 infection, which closely resembles other post-infective fatigue states. The underlying immunological disturbances of LC are poorly understood. Multiple explanatory mechanisms, such as persisting SARS-CoV-2 reservoirs, reactivation of latent viruses, endothelial dysfunction, auto-antibodies, tissue damage, and immune abnormalities, have been proposed but remain incompletely characterized, particularly in younger populations.

Impact of pre-existing interstitial lung abnormalities on pneumonitis risk and survival in chemo-naive patients with non-small-cell lung cancer receiving pembrolizumab plus chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Pre-existing interstitial lung abnormalities (ILAs) are risk factors for immune checkpoint inhibitor related pneumonitis (ICI-P). However, the effects of first-line pembrolizumab plus platinum-based chemotherapy (PCT) on survival and ICI-P in chemo-naive patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and ILAs remain unclear. We, therefore, aimed to investigate these effects. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed patients with NSCLC who received first-line PCT at 12 Japanese institutions between December 2018 and December 2022. Based on computed tomography findings, patients were

Five-year prognostic impact of pre-existing interstitial lung disease in non-small cell lung cancer patients treated with anti-PD-1 monotherapy: a retrospective analysis.

BACKGROUND: Anti-programmed death 1 (PD-1) antibodies, a type of immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI), have enhanced survival rates in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). While some patients with NSCLC have pre-existing interstitial lung disease (ILD), data on the long-term safety and effectiveness of anti-PD-1 antibodies for this group are still unclear. METHODS: We examined patients with advanced NSCLC who experienced recurrence after surgery or radiotherapy and received anti-PD-1 antibody monotherapy at Aichi Cancer Center Hospital from December 2015 to December 2018. The study assessed the co

Influenza pneumonia mice under different immune conditions: changes in pulmonary microbiota and metabolites.

Pneumonia is the most common complication of influenza virus infection and is associated with a high mortality rate in immunocompromised individuals. Currently, neither vaccination nor antiviral therapy has achieved satisfactory therapeutic outcomes. Unlike other organs, the lungs harbor a distinct microbial community due to their unique exposure patterns to airborne particulates and pathogens. However, the characteristic alterations of the pulmonary microbiota and its metabolic products, as well as their potential association with immune suppression in influenza pneumonia, remain inadequately

Hypsizygus marmoreus polysaccharides protect against cisplatin-induced intestinal mucositis via modulation of gut microbiota, inflammation, and intestinal barrier function.

INTRODUCTION: Chemotherapy-induced intestinal mucositis is a frequent and debilitating complication of anticancer treatment, particularly with cisplatin, leading to disruption of the epithelial barrier, inflammation, and dysbiosis of the gut microbiota. Natural polysaccharides with antioxidant and immunomodulatory properties have attracted increasing attention as potential protective agents. This study investigated the protective effects of Hypsizygus marmoreus polysaccharides (HMP) against cisplatin-induced intestinal mucositis in mice. METHODS: HMP were extracted and structurally characteri

Conversion Liver Resection for Hepatocellular Carcinoma with Portal Vein Tumor Thrombus after Single Tremelimumab Regular Interval Durvalumab Regimen as a Second-Line Therapy: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a leading cause of cancer-related mortality, with limited treatment options for advanced, unresectable cases. Although immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI), particularly the combination of atezolizumab plus bevacizumab (Atezo+Bev), have improved outcomes, many patients ultimately experience disease progression. The single tremelimumab regular interval durvalumab (STRIDE) regimen has emerged as a promising alternative, yet evidence of its efficacy as a second-line therapy remains limited. Detection of bladder cancer in patients with microscopic hematuria using Oncuria-Detect: results of a prospective, multicenter international study.

BACKGROUND: Microscopic hematuria occurs in up to 10% of the general population and initiates costly evaluation to ensure no bladder cancer exists. Oncuria-Detect is a 10-plex immunoassay that detects de novo bladder cancer by generating a protein biomarker signature from a single voided urine sample. This report details the analysis of our prospective study that compares the diagnostic performance of the multiplex Oncuria-Detect assay to that of the single-analyte (i.e., NMP22) BladderChek™ urine assay and urine cytology for identifying bladder/urothelial cancer in patients with microscopic h

Risk Factors and Delivery Outcomes Among Women Diagnosed With Human Papillomavirus Prior to Pregnancy Comparing High-Risk and Low-Risk Strains: A Retrospective Chart Review.

INTRODUCTION: Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination has reduced infection, but the virus remains widespread, with over 20 million new cases in the U.S. each year, with known effects on pregnancy outcomes. While prior studies have focused on infections acquired during pregnancy, less is known about how a history of HPV infection, cervical procedures, or treatment before conception may influence delivery and neonatal outcomes. Understanding these relationships could improve prenatal risk assessment and care planning. METHODS: A single-center retrospective cohort study was conducted on patients

Venous and arterial thromboembolic events after COVID-19 during the Omicron period in three European countries.

Patients with earlier SARS-CoV-2 variants are at increased risk of venous and arterial thromboembolic (VTE, ATE) events. Here we aimed to contextualise the incidence of thromboembolic events among patients with COVID-19 during the Omicron period. We conducted a population-based cohort study using electronic health records from the UK (CPRD GOLD), the Netherlands (IPCI), and Spain (SIDIAP) within the DARWIN EU® network. Two cohorts were included: a pre-pandemic population (2017-2019) and individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2 during the Omicron-dominant period. We estimated incidence rates (IRs)
