The presence of serum agglutinins and precipitins to Candida albicans in men and women who had impaired bladder function following spinal injury is compared with that in other patients in hospital and in apparently fit men and women. Antibody levels which have commonly been regarded as significant were found in 35 of 76 patients who had urinary candidiasis; in 10 of 52 patients who had spinal injury without urinary candidiasis; in eight of 57 patients who had neither of these conditions, and in nine of 191 normal men and women. Candida albicans septicaemia occurred in an alcoholic woman who had severe hepatic dysfunction, and was further debilitated by multiple cardiac arrests, prolonged artificial ventilation, bronchopneumonia and Ps. aeruginosa septicaemia. She received broad spectrum antibiotics and corticosteroids, and needed prolonged intravenous cannulation. Renal tissues from two groups of patients were studied with fluorescein-labeled (Fl-) antibodies (Abs) to immunoglobulins, complement, and antibodies prepared in rabbits against BSA conjugate of 5-methyluridine (T) and cytidine (C), the latter two of which react specifically with denatured DNA. A great deal of interest and speculation has arisen from the discovery of a specific antigen, Australia antigen, in the serum of a high proportion of patients with viral hepatitis. Studies on the replication of herpes simplex virus in organized cultures of rat central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS) tissue demonstrated synthesis of intra- and extracellular virus, as determined by plaque assay on HEp-2 cells. The similarity in the cases of rat-bite fever recorded in the literature establishes it as a definite clinical entity. The same symptomatology occurs in cases from Asia, Europe, and America. The greater frequency of the disease in Japan than elsewhere is probably due to the housing conditions and habits of the people resulting in the more frequent occurrence of rat-bites.
