ObjectiveWhile median cleft lip (MCL) remains rare, improvements in prenatal and postnatal care have improved survival past the neonatal period and thus have increased consideration of surgical repair. MCL is also anatomically distinct from unilateral and bilateral cleft lips and is associated with underlying genetically based syndromes. There is a lack of aggregated data on MCL, and this study provides an overview of the literature, characterizes associated phenotypes, and synthesizes surgical and follow-up management.DesignFollowing Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-A

BACKGROUND: The management of pancreatic tumors varies depending on the tissue origin, as the tissue type results in numerous differences in the tumor's behavior. Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (pNETs) arise from pancreatic islet cells, distinguishing them from pancreatic adenocarcinomas that arise from glandular tissue. Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors are frequently resected by pancreaticoduodenectomy. This review examines complications of pancreaticoduodenectomy in patients with pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors.

BACKGROUND: Cranioplasty restores cranial integrity following decompressive craniectomy or skull trauma. Despite its reconstructive benefits, post-cranioplasty complication rates are high. Post-operative drainage has been proposed to mitigate these risks, yet its effectiveness remains uncertain. This study evaluates the impact of post-cranioplasty drain insertion on surgical outcomes.
METHODS: A systematic literature search of MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane CENTRAL Library was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines (PROSPEROID:CRD420251030365). Studies reporting cranioplasty outcomes w

Venous ulcers are among the most common chronic wounds, considerably impacting quality of life and causing substantial economic burden. This study aimed to determine if race and ethnicity are predictors for ulceration among ambulatory patients with venous insufficiency. Physician-reported data were extracted from the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS) collected between 2014 and 2019. An estimated 42.7 (95% Confidence Interval (CI) 39.9-45.5) million outpatient visits with a diagnosis of venous insufficiency, unspecified chronic wound, or varicose veins were included in the analysi

CONTEXT: Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO), a paraneoplastic disorder characterized by renal phosphate wasting, is cured by surgical removal of the culprit tumor. Despite correct localization, some remain refractory to intervention, resulting in substantial long-term medical complications.
OBJECTIVE: We aim to identify risk factors associated with a refractory outcome.
METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort of 44 patients with TIO diagnosed from 1998 to 2023 who underwent targeted intervention following successfully localization. Cure was defined as maintenance of normophosphatemia without s

Diversity of the microbiota, which is essential for lower airway homeostasis, is greatly altered in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is the ultimate protective treatment for the lungs of patients with severe ARDS, but little is known about its effect on the lung microbiota of these patients. To evaluate the effect of ECMO on the lung microbiota of ARDS patients, we performed 16S rRNA and fungal ITS1 profiling and shotgun sequencing on bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) collected from ARDS patients due to COVID-19. BALF was collected from 1

Surgical wounds may arise due to harm inflicted upon soft tissue during surgical intervention, and many complications and injuries may accompany them. These complications can lead to prolonged hospitalization and poorer clinical outcomes. Also, Machine learning (ML) is a Section of artificial intelligence (AI) that has emerged in medical care and is increasingly used for diagnosis, complications, prognosis and recurrence prediction. This study aims to investigate surgical wound risk predictions and management using a ML algorithm by R programming language analysis. The systematic review, follo

BACKGROUND: Small bowel obstructions (SBOs) are a common complication following staged IPAA. Our goal was to compare early post-operative SBO outcomes between different staged ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA) and to further analyze the type of procedures required in patients who needed operative management of SBO.
METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, we selected all patients who presented to our tertiary care center between 2008 and 2017, with ulcerative colitis or IBD-Unspecified colitis and who underwent a primary total proctocolectomy with IPAA for medically refractory disease o

INTRODUCTION: Burn injuries are associated with significant morbidity, often necessitating surgical management. Older patients are more prone to burns and more vulnerable to complications following major burns. While the relationship between senescence and major burns has already been thoroughly investigated, the role of age in minor burns remains unclear. To better understand differences between elderly and younger patients with predominantly minor burns, we analyzed a multi-institutional database.
METHODS: We reviewed the 2008-2020 ACS-NSQIP database to identify patients who had suffered bu
