Utility of the Brain Gauge in Traumatic Brain Injury: Results of the Al Asad Missile Exposure Traumatic Brain Injury and Health Implications Study.

INTRODUCTION: Blast exposure is responsible for the great majority of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) in deployed military service members (SMs). More rapid and reliable methods of diagnosis of blast TBI are needed. The Brain Gauge has been touted as an option, but published reports have had mixed results. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A review of a case series of 15 U.S. SMs (2 females) with TBI from incoming missiles fired at Al Asad Air Force Base, Iraq, on January 8, 2020. All had medical evacuation to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center (LRMC), Germany where the Brain Gauge was administered; 10 of 1

Neuroprotective effect of berberine-loaded niosomes against brain injury in dyslipidemic rats: The interplay between oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction and apoptotic signals.

UNLABELLED: Dyslipidemia is a major risk factor for the development of atherosclerosis, cardiovascular diseases, and brain injury. Berberine (BER), a type of isoquinoline alkaloid, has the potential to enhance mitochondrial performance owing to its remarkable antioxidant properties. This study aimed to explore how berberine-loaded niosomes (BER-NIO) would alleviate the adverse effects of brain injury in dyslipidemic rats. Hence, for this purpose, the genes of electron transport chain, mitochondrial dynamics, mitophagy, and apoptosis were assessed in brain tissue. Moreover, molecular docking an

Body Mass Index as a Prognostic Factor in Traumatic Brain Injury: Insights from a Real-World Cohort.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between obesity and traumatic brain injury is complex and not fully understood. While obesity is commonly linked to worse outcomes, conflicting data support the "obesity paradox," with higher body mass index showing protective effects. METHODS: We identified patients with traumatic brain injury and defined two propensity score-matched cohorts: patients with normal weight and patients with obesity. Outcomes were compared using risk estimates, odds ratios, Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, and log-rank testing. RESULTS: Obesity was associated with slightly lower risk

Diagnosis and management of orbital compartment syndrome caused by retrobulbar hematoma following orbital fractures.

While challenging, early diagnosis and appropriate management of retrobulbar hematoma (RBH) with orbital compartment syndrome (OCS) may improve patient prognosis. Our objective was to characterize OCS caused by RBH to establish clinically relevant management recommendations. A retrospective monocentric study was performed between 2018 and 2024 to evaluate the management and visual outcomes of patients treated in our department for RBH with OCS. In addition, to compare our results, a scoping literature review was performed to include all patients with the same characteristics (RBH with OCS). Ou

Clinical Application of a Multistage Algorithm for Aesthetic and Functional Reconstruction in Post-Traumatic Craniofacial Sequelae.

BACKGROUND: Craniomaxillofacial trauma is a common occurrence in adults, often resulting from vehicle accidents, assaults, sports injuries, working accidents, and others. The primary goal of craniomaxillofacial trauma surgery is to restore function and aesthetics, while also supporting the patient's social reintegration. However, many patients develop post-traumatic complications and sequelae such as malocclusion, facial asymmetry, unsatisfactory aesthetic outcomes, pseudoarthrosis, airway disturbances, and nasal or ocular dysfunction. A multistage reconstruction approach involves sequential p

A Systematic review and meta-analysis on prospective memory rehabilitation in adults with non-progressive acquired brain injury.

Prospective memory (PM) is often impaired following acquired brain injury (ABI). However, its rehabilitation remains challenging for neuropsychologists. Following PRISMA guidelines, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the effectiveness, durability, and real-life impact of PM interventions in adults suffering from non-progressive ABI. Twenty-seven studies published between January 2008 and December 2024 met the inclusion criteria: fourteen randomized controlled trials (RCTs), seven non-randomized trials, four pre-post studies, and two case series. Ten RCTs were includ

Sex-related differences in end-of-life decision-making in patients with traumatic brain injury: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Families and medical professionals caring for traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients are often faced with decisions regarding the limitation of life-sustaining treatment (LLST). Considering difficulty of outcome prognostication and the resulting lack of objectivity, these decisions remain challenging. Although it is recognized that sex influences end-of-life care, research on sex differences in palliative care (PC) is scarce. To better understand the decision-making process at the end of life in TBI, we investigated potential sex-differences in the frequency of LLST and PC involveme

Tmem110 regulates the conformation of TRPML1 to maintain endolysosomal homeostasis and prevent mitochondrial DNA leakage and pathological self-DNA processing.

The mechanisms by which phagocytes handle large quantities of internalized organelles, such as mitochondria released during tissue injury, remain unclear. Here we show that the endoplasmic reticulum transmembrane regulator TMEM110 is a key determinant of disease severity in traumatic brain injury-associated multiple organ dysfunction. Loss of TMEM110 impairs the clearance of mitochondria aberrantly released into the circulation, leading to heightened autoimmune-mediated tissue injury and mortality. TMEM110 maintains lysosomal function by controlling the conformational transition of the lysosom
