Outcomes of open cardiopulmonary resuscitation in pulseless blunt chest trauma: A nationwide cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Open cardiopulmonary resuscitation (OCPR) is a critical treatment for severe torso trauma. While OCPR has shown survival benefits for patients with penetrating traumatic cardiac arrest, its efficacy in blunt trauma patients remains unclear. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study analyzed pulseless blunt chest trauma patients from the National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB) in the United States during 2014-2015. The study excluded patients under 18 years of age, those without initial signs of life, and those with burns, penetrating trauma, unknown mechanisms, incomplete

[Endoscopic interventions for gunshot craniocerebral injuries].

UNLABELLED: Full-endoscopic (neuroendoscopic) removal of foreign bodies from the cranial cavity is a relatively new technique with limited information available in the literature. Compared to open surgeries, this minimally invasive approach is associated with less impact on the surrounding brain tissues and fewer complications. The safety of such procedures is enhanced by the use of CT navigation. This article describes the surgical technique of endoscopic removal of metallic fragments in combat-related gunshot cranial injuries, based on five clinical cases, and presents the results of a syste

A report of the safety of prophylactic spinal fluid drainage in open and endovascular thoracic and thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm patients.

OBJECTIVES: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a complication of open and endovascular thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA) and thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm (TAAA) repair. Spinal fluid drainage (SFD) is used to reduce SCI risk in open surgery; however, many question the safety of SFD in endovascular repair. The objective of this retrospective study was to review the risks of prophylactic SFD in 1445 patients undergoing open and endovascular TAA and TAAA repair from 1987 to 2023. METHODS: Spinal drains were placed in open TAAA repairs and endovascular repairs planning >12 cm aortic coverage. Cardiac an

Tendoscopic Peroneus Longus to Brevis Tendon Transfer Technique for Flexible Cavovarus Deformity With Medial Forefoot Overload and Chronic Diabetic Foot Ulceration.

Glycosylation of type 1 collagen fibers in diabetes mellitus results in contractures of the gastroc-soleus, tibialis posterior, peroneus longus muscle groups and plantar fascia, which may lead to progressive cavovarus deformity. The medial forefoot is reported to be the third most common location of chronic plantar diabetic foot ulceration (CPDFU), occurring because of increased plantar pressure secondary to deformity and loss of protective sensation. With high recurrence rates after nonoperative treatment with total contact casting and low patient adherence to orthotic footwear, surgical offl

Oral microflora of Trimeresurus snakes in a biodiversity hotspot of North Eastern India.

BACKGROUND: A significant number of snake bites are reported every year from Mizoram, the majority of which are considered to be Trimeresurus erythrurus. The occurrence of deaths from deadly venomous to mildly venomous snake bites has also been reflected in records. Even if the bites are not fatal, they cause a significant problem as they are often associated with secondary bacterial infection. This is believed to significantly contribute to complications in addition to the effect of venom. AIM: Here, we attempt to capture aerobic bacterial diversity from the oro-pharyngeal swabs of wild disp

Acceptability of a Brain-Injury-Tailored Yoga and Meditation Program Among Female Patients with Concussion.

Background: Although concussion symptoms often resolve within 4-6 weeks, for a minority of patients, persistent postconcussion symptoms (PPCS), such as headaches, fatigue, and mood disturbances, may continue for months or years following a head injury. Rehabilitation of this group-often female-is crucial for reducing health and gender disparities in concussion recovery. A recent report by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health showed that the use of complementary health approaches, such as yoga and meditation, has substantially increased in the last two decades. Little is

The "Slash Pack" as a Temporary Method for Initial Hemorrhage Control of Penetrating Neck Trauma in the Emergency Department: A Report of Two Cases.

Penetrating trauma to the neck poses a critical challenge in the emergency department. These wounds have the potential to lead to rapid blood loss, hemorrhagic shock, and an increase in mortality. Large academic tertiary centers typically have vast resources and consultants to allow for rapid assessment and treatment of penetrating neck trauma. In community emergency departments, this is not typically the case, as surgical backup is usually not readily available and lacks the additional subspecialty coverage to aid in the management of the trauma patient. This situation often necessitates inno

Robot-assisted MIS surgery in a pregnant woman with lumbar traumatic fracture: A technical note.

The occurrence of a vertebral fracture in a pregnant woman presents unique challenges in terms of diagnosis and therapeutic. Managing such cases requires multidisciplinary collaboration to minimize x-rays and preserve fetus development while ensuring efficient treatment of the fracture in the mother. We report the case of an 18 y/o primiparous woman at 20 weeks of gestation who suffered a polytrauma without neurological deficit. Full body CT-scan reported an A2 M1 (AO Spine Classification) fracture of L3 and an A1 fracture of L2. In this situation, both patient positioning and irradiation were

Instruments for measuring fatigue in patients with brain tumours: protocol for a COSMIN--based systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Cancer-related fatigue occurs at high rates and can harm patients' quality of life and even reduce survival, especially in patients with brain tumours. Many measures have been developed to assess this condition, but there have been no systematic reviews evaluating the metrological properties of these tools, and it is difficult to determine the measures with optimal properties and the conditions under which they should be applied. Therefore, we need to collect existing evidence and choose the most reasonable instrument. Our aim is to identify all instruments used to measure fatigu

A Near-Miss: Arrow Trauma to the Skull Without Penetration.

We report the case of a 77-year-old woman who presented to the emergency department (ED) after being unexpectedly struck in the head by an arrow while walking through a densely populated urban area in Barcelona, Spain. This highly unusual presentation in a modern city context prompted immediate multidisciplinary evaluation in the ED. Initial radiographs showed a metallic arrow tip in close proximity to the skull's cortical surfaces. Non-contrast head computed tomography (CT) and 3D reconstruction confirmed a left parietal soft tissue injury without intracranial penetration. The patient underwe

Penetrating Head Injury With a Motor Bike Key.

Traumatic head injuries can be penetrating and non-penetrating. Penetrating head injuries are usually caused by low to high velocity, either with sharp or blunt objects. Penetrating objects may include knives, nails, forks, scissors, pencils, and even keys. Patients with penetrating brain injuries are mostly involved in road traffic accidents, assault injuries, accidental injuries, or even suicide attempts. This case report focuses on an accidental penetrating brain injury due to a bike key to a 21-year-old male near the left orbital wall. The patient underwent left lateral wall orbitotomy wit

Proximal Tibiofibular Joint Surgery: Preoperative Planning With MRI Scan to Determine Intraoperative Safe Zones.

BACKGROUND: The proximal tibiofibular joint (PTFJ) is a less-understood aspect of the knee, which has significance in knee injuries. However, current literature has shown that there is a lack of a gold standard in PTFJ fixation. Our study aims to characterize the PTFJ and describe safe zones for intraoperative instrumentation and implant fixation for PTFJ stabilization. METHODS: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) knee images from 49 patients in a large public institution were reviewed retrospectively and analysed. Morphological parameters of PTFJ were measured, such as the PTFJ angle, width, sh
