INTRODUCTION: Statoacoustic n. neurinoma is a benign, slow-growing and usually unilateral tumor. During its growth the tumor exerts pressure on the surrounding anatomic forms within the pontocerebellar angle: cranial nerves, pons, cerebellum. Therefore the first clinical symptoms are ear buzzing and deafness, vision disorders, occipital headache or walking difficulties. The diagnosis of such conditions must be precise, whereas CT (computerized tomography) and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) are the methods of choice. Surgical tumor removal is the only therapy, but during surgery facial nerve

OBJECTIVE: To study the value of an improvement of the presigmoid petrosal approach to the petroclival area by the addition of partial labyrinthectomy and petrous apicectomy and to document hearing and other results.
METHODS: Thirty-six consecutive patients treated by this technique during a 2-year period were studied prospectively. The lesions treated included 33 petroclival neoplasms (25 meningiomas, 5 chordomas, 1 chondrosarcoma, 1 trigeminal schwannoma, and 1 epidermoid cyst) and 3 vertebrobasilar aneurysms. The patients underwent clinical, radiological, and neuro-otological examinations.

This audit report details early post-operative complications following surgery for chronic otitis media. One hundred and forty-five cases were assessed. There were no facial nerve palsies, a bone conduction threshold elevation occurred in 4.6 per cent of cases. A wound infection occurred in six per cent of cases as did BIPP allergy. Twenty-six per cent of patients reported symptoms consistent with chorda tympani trauma. Short-lived symptoms of jaw discomfort were reported by 46 per cent of patients and imbalance or vertigo by 10 per cent of patients. The findings are compared with other publis

HYPOTHESIS: The chorda tympani and Arnold's nerves have close approximation to each other and their cross-innervation is possible after ear surgery.
STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective study was performed with a temporal bone pathology case and two clinical cases as representatives of such a possibility. Patients had severe otalgia and wet ear during gustatory stimulation.
METHODS: A temporal bone pathology case was studied under a light microscope. Earache and/or wet ear were provoked during gustatory stimulation. Wet ear was tested with iodine-starch reaction after the subject tasted lemon juice

Treatment options for peripheral facial palsy (PFP) are an often discussed problem in neurologic practice. Following a short description of the complex anatomy of the seventh cranial nerve we therefore review possible etiologies in the context of leading clinical signs, with idiopathic PFP or Bell's palsy (BP) being most frequent. A rather typical clinical course of BP allows to focus differential diagnostic workup predominantly on the rapid identification of treatable infections such as with Herpes zoster or Borrelia burgdorferi. Neuroimaging studies are needed only in case of trauma, with sl

A patient who survived with traumatic multiple cranial nerve palsies and occluded internal carotid artery associated with a basal skull fracture that involved the carotid canal is described. A literature review indicates that a wide variety of injuries can occur to the carotid artery as it passes through a fractured skull base. Basal fractures involving the course of the carotid artery reflect a significant risk of carotid injury.

It is generally accepted that hemifacial spasm (HFS) and trigeminal neuralgia are caused by compression of the facial nerve (seventh cranial nerve) or the trigeminal nerve (fifth cranial nerve) at the nerve's root exit (or entry) zone (REZ); thus, neurosurgeons generally perform neurovascular decompression at the REZ. Neurosurgeons tend to ignore vascular compression at distal portions of the seventh cranial nerve, even when found incidentally while performing neurovascular decompression at the REZ of that nerve, because compression of distal portions of the seventh cranial nerve has not been

Optic nerve compression is one of the complications in craniofacial surgery and blepharoplasty. We have shown previously that acute and chronic nerve compression produce significant tissue injury in rat sciatic nerve. In the present study the optic nerve was evaluated for possible ischemia/reperfusion injury after acute compression in an animal model. Male New Zealand White rabbits were used in the experiment. The optic nerve was subjected to 2-hour compression followed by reperfusion for 1 hour. Nerve compression was established by banding the optic nerve with silastic tubing. The compressed

A healthy, 10-day-old Welsh A pony colt was totally blind 1 day after arrival at a studfarm. Both eyes appeared normal on external inspection. The young animal had been very distressed during the 40-km journey to the studfarm. Intravenous corticosteroids were administered for 2 days, but did not result in any observable improvement. The animal was euthanized at the owner's request. Both eyes with the optic nerves were removed for histological examination. Both optic nerves showed Wallerian degeneration, a well-known response of peripheral nerves to trauma. The foal, which was not tethered duri

BACKGROUND: Disorders of lower lip in facial expression are mostly caused by functional impairment of the marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve. In a typical case, active exposure of the incisors of the mandible is not possible and the lip appears distorted towards the healthy side. The most frequent cause of a lesion of the marginal mandibular branch is iatrogenic injury during operations in the mandibular or parotid region.
DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS: Functional disorders of the platysma, congenital hypoplasia or aplasia of the lower lip muscles, and defective healing following facial

To emphasize the risks of recurrent laryngeal nerve lesions during transhiatal oesophagectomy an anatomical study of the course of the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) was performed. Twenty RLN were dissected in their thoracic portion. This work showed the constancy of the low origin of the nerve in the adult under the aortic arch, and its course in the tracheal angle. It confirmed the close connections of the nerve with the posterior mediastinal viscera. Lastly, it displayed oesophageal nerve branches arising from the RLN and a few anastomoses between them and the tracheal nerve branches. This

BACKGROUND: A number of different surgical methods are described in the literature to enlarge the glottic gap in patients with bilateral recurrent nerve paralysis with an excessively small glottic gap. The latest method is the posterior chordectomy described by Dennis and Kashima.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-three patients with bilateral recurrent nerve paralysis were treated between 1993 and 1997. In the first 5 patients, a muscular triangle as described by Dennis and Kashima from the posterior part of the muscular portion of the vocal fold was resected. Later on, the surgical procedure was

Recently the very significant role of the postganglionic sympathetic neuron (PGSN) terminal in the production of neurogenic inflammation has been appreciated. An important model of this sympathetically dependent inflammation is venular plasma extravasation (PE) and neutrophil attraction produced by local intra-articular injection of the potent inflammatory mediator bradykinin (BK). Sympathetic-dependent PE in the synovium has been proposed as a protective mechanism in arthritis. In a recent series of studies, a novel mechanism has been discovered by which activation of primary afferent nocicep
