Minimal morbidity occurs with resection of most carotid body tumors (CBT). With larger tumors significant injury to the cranial nerves has been reported. In order to assess the operative sequelae rate, 30 patients with CBT were reviewed. Sixteen patients either presented with bilateral carotid body tumors or had previously undergone a resection of the contralateral carotid body tumors, for a total carotid body tumor count of 46. Sixteen patients demonstrated a familial pattern while 14 were nonfamilial. Within the familial group, 14 of 16 presented with multiple paragangliomas as compared to 6

We present the case of a 62-yr-old patient who developed severe swallowing problems 5 yr after radiotherapy for a pharyngeal carcinoma. Although peripheral and cranial nerves are thought to be relatively radioresistant, cranial nerve damage can occur many years after radiotherapy. This may result in severe deglutition disorders and lead to a complete inability to eat normally. The aim is to demonstrate how these late sequelae can cause impairment of different structures involved in the swallowing process.

The trigeminal nerve is the great sensory nerve of the facial portion of the head, and an intimate knowledge of this nerve and its surrounding structures is a prerequisite to the application of structures is a prerequisite to the application of profound local anesthesia without complication. In this review article, the classic description of the relevant anatomy is presented and updated with recently published research into anatomic variations that have an impact on the induction of clinical local anesthesia. Causes of both failure and complications of traditional local anesthetic techniques a

Gunshot injuries of the temporal bone are uncommon but are being seen more frequently with the increasing incidence of violent crimes and use of firearms. A retrospective analysis of 43 consecutive patients treated at our institution with this injury was undertaken to determine the clinical symptoms, associated injuries, and treatment outcome. This is the largest series from a single institution treated by a single group during a brief period of time. Most of these patients had injury to various structures within and around the temporal bone, including hearing loss (29), intracranial injury (2

Ophthalmological examination was performed in 350 consecutive inpatients with closed head injury, treated in the Neurosurgical Department, Białystok over a period of two years. The group comprised 266 men and 84 women, aged between 16 and 90 years. The purpose of the study was to screen for the symptoms of damage to cranial nerves II-VII. In 12% of cases internal, external or total III nerve palsy was identified. In 2% of cases there were symptoms of damage to the VII nerve, in 1.4% of damage to the V nerve and in 1.1% to the II nerve. In 0.6% of cases damage was observed to the VI nerve. Ther

PURPOSE: This study assesses the physical and psychosocial consequences of trigeminal nerve damage.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A questionnaire consisting of 33 questions, 30 of which had fixed alternatives, was mailed to 300 persons who had received compensation from a syndicate of several insurance companies (Konsortiet för Patientförsäkring) because of trigeminal nerve damage. One question with no alternative reply gave the respondents an opportunity to comment on their problems and to rate them on a visual analogue scale. The questionnaire was answered by 226 recipients, 72 men and 153 women.

BACKGROUND: The surgical strategy for meningiomas involving the cavernous sinus (CS) is still controversial because of the difficult surgical approach and the risks of injury to the cranial nerves or the internal carotid artery. We evaluated the efficacy of subtotal removal of meningiomas involving the CS following chemical embolization, preserving cranial nerve functions.
METHODS: We analyzed the histology, embolization material, recurrence rate, and neurologic complications in 19 fresh cases with meningioma involving the CS, who received subtotal removal surgery and were followed over 1 yea

Neurosensory deficit is one of the major complications encountered in oral and maxillofacial surgery. OBJECTIVES. To determine the efficacy of electronic thermography in objectively assessing neurosensory deficits of the inferior alveolar nerve. STUDY DESIGN. Three studies were conducted measuring skin temperature over the chin region of the face at 0.1 degree C accuracy. RESULTS. (1) Thermal symmetry of the chin region in normal subjects (delta T = 0.2 degree C, SD = 0.02 degree C); (2) Induction of transient thermal asymmetry by local anesthetic injection (delta T = +0.4 degree C, SD = 0.2 d

Paralysis of the tongue due to isolated bilateral hypoglossal nerve palsy is a rare occurrence. Due to a trauma the cause in our case may have been a traction injury to both hypoglossal nerves at the base of skull. In some cases a contributing factor may be malformation of the skull base. Most cases have a good prognosis for recovery.

Neuromonitoring of neural structures has become increasingly common during surgery near cortical areas representing sensorimotor and language function (epilepsia, tumors), in the brain stem and the spinal cord (tumors), near cranial nerves (cerebellopontine angle tumors, trigeminal neuralgia, hemifacial spasm), and in the cauda equina (tumors, tethered spinal cord). The technical spectrum to monitor these operations includes electrical cortical stimulation to evoke sensorimotor phenomena and language disturbances, electroneurography and -myography of the cauda equina, motor cranial nerves and
