Global brain network modularity dynamics after local optic nerve damage following noninvasive brain stimulation: an EEG-tracking study.

Tightly connected clusters of nodes, called communities, interact in a time-dependent manner in brain functional connectivity networks (FCN) to support complex cognitive functions. However, little is known if and how different nodes synchronize their neural interactions to form functional communities ("modules") during visual processing and if and how this modularity changes postlesion (progression or recovery) following neuromodulation. Using the damaged optic nerve as a paradigm, we now studied brain FCN modularity dynamics to better understand module interactions and dynamic reconfiguration

Application of Vagus Nerve Stimulation in Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a prevalent devastating condition causing significant morbidity and mortality, especially in developing countries. The pathophysiology of SCI involves ischemia, neuroinflammation, cell death, and scar formation. Due to the lack of definitive therapy for SCI, interventions mainly focus on rehabilitation to reduce deterioration and improve the patient's quality of life. Currently, rehabilitative exercises and neuromodulation methods such as functional electrical stimulation, epidural electrical stimulation, and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation are being tes

Management of Complications in Vestibular Schwannoma Surgery.

Microsurgical removal of acoustic neuroma has advanced tremendously; however, complications still occur. Facial nerve injury is the most common detrimental complication and should take precedence over gross tumor removal in cases where there is an unfavorable tumor-facial nerve interface. Cerebrospinal fluid leakage can occur even with meticulous closure techniques and is generally treatable with either lumbar-subarachnoid drainage or revision wound closure. Meningitis is a serious complication that requires a high index of suspicion in the postoperative period. Other less common complications

Exploring the Modulatory Effect of High-Fat Nutrition on Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Acute Lung Injury in Vagotomized Rats and the Role of the Vagus Nerve.

During esophagectomy, the vagus nerve is transected, which may add to the development of postoperative complications. The vagus nerve has been shown to attenuate inflammation and can be activated by a high-fat nutrition via the release of acetylcholine. This binds to α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (α7nAChR) and inhibits α7nAChR-expressing inflammatory cells. This study investigates the role of the vagus nerve and the effect of high-fat nutrition on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced lung injury in rats. Firstly, 48 rats were randomized in 4 groups as follows: sham (sparing vagus nerve), ab

Subclassification of Koos grade 4 vestibular schwannoma: insights into tumor morphology for predicting postoperative facial nerve function.

OBJECTIVE: Koos grade 4 vestibular schwannoma (KG4VS) is a large tumor that causes brainstem displacement and is generally considered a candidate for surgery. Few studies have examined the relationship between morphological differences in KG4VS other than tumor size and postoperative facial nerve function. The authors have developed a landmark-based subclassification of KG4VS that provides insights into the morphology of this tumor and can predict the risk of facial nerve injury during microsurgery. The aims of this study were to morphologically verify the validity of this subclassification an

Depression-like phenotypes in mice with hepatic ischemia/reperfusion injury: A role of gut-microbiota-liver-brain axis via vagus nerve.

Depression is a frequent symptom in patients with chronic liver disease; however, the mechanisms underlying this association remain unclear. Dysbiosis of gut microbiota plays a critical role in depression through the gut-brain axis via the vagus nerve. In this study, we investigated whether the gut-microbiota-liver-brain axis plays a role in depression-like phenotypes in mice with hepatic ischemia/reperfusion (HI/R) injury via the vagus nerve. Behavioral tests for depression-like behaviors were performed 7 days after sham or HI/R injury surgery. Mice with HI/R injury exhibited splenomegaly, sy

Analysis of the Outcomes of Immediate Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve Reconstruction During Thyroid Surgery for Prevention of Vocal Fold Paralysis.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury and the resulting paralysis is the most common and known complication of thyroid surgery. Several surgical techniques, such as medialization thyroplasty with or without arytenoid adduction and injection laryngoplasty, have been developed to treat RLN injury, but these procedures have specific limitations and complications. In this study, we present the outcomes for our patients who underwent immediate RLN reconstruction during thyroid surgery by analyzing both subjective and objective outcomes. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted for

Traumatic cavernous sinus syndrome - A peculiar presentation of multiple cranial nerve neuropathies following a minor head injury: Case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: In patients with traumatic head injuries, the percentage of cranial nerve injuries (CNI) range from4.3 to 17.6% in which majority are isolated CNI[1-5].In present literature, moderate to severe types of head injuries are often studied which may result in a lack of representation and description of CNI associated with minor head injuries (MHI). Alongside this peculiar case of a traumatic cavernous sinus syndrome (CSS) that is non-thrombotic and non-fistulous in nature, this paper aims to analyse traumatic CNI in non-severe head injuries and the surrounding literature. CASE REPORT:

Endoscopic Extended Transsphenoidal Surgery Aiming for Radical Resection of Skull Base Tumors Involving Cavernous Sinus: Assessment of Resectability and Risks of Complications.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Surgical resection of tumors invading the cavernous sinus (CS) still shows therapeutic challenges. For "nonadenomatous" skull base tumors invading in CS, there were only a few reports showing the outcomes of radical resection. Therefore, the outcomes of endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery (ETS) aiming for radical resection thus remain largely unknown regarding resectability and functional results of the cranial nerves. METHODS: We performed ETS aiming for radical resection in 35 skull base tumors involving CS (17 chondrosarcomas, 12 chordomas, 3 meningiomas, and 3 tr

Minimally invasive extraocular cranial nerve electromyography.

OBJECTIVE: A reluctance to monitor extraocular cranial nerve (EOCN) function has restricted skull base surgery worldwide. Spontaneous and triggered electromyography (EMG) monitoring can be recorded intraoperatively to identify and assess potential cranial nerve injury. Determining the conductive function of EOCNs requires the collection of clear, reliable, and repeatable compound muscle action potentials (CMAPs) secondary to stimulation. EOCN EMG needle electrodes can, although infrequently, cause ocular morbidity including hematoma, edema, and scleral laceration. The aim of this study was to
