[Meningoradiculitis after tick bites. Apropos of 9 cases].

The authors report a series of 9 cases of meningoradiculitis after tick bites and compare them with 56 other cases in the literature. Clinically, the bite is followed by a free interval, then more or less extensive local erythema, pain then paralysis is undoubtedly the most typical presentation. Uni- or bilateral paralysis of the 7th cranial nerve was found in more than 50% of cases. Erythema may exceptionally be absent. There may be forms with pain alone. Finally, there may sometimes be pyramidal signs or signs of brain irritation. As concerns the course, one should note the absence of respir

[Bilateral traumatic abducens nerve palsy without skull fracture or intracranial hematoma-a report of 3 cases and consideration of the mechanism of injury (author's transl)].

Three cases of bilateral traumatic abducens nerve palsy were presented and the mechanism of damage to the abducens nerve was discussed in relation to the analysis of traumatic force at the time of impact and topographical anatomy of the abducens nerve in detail. Case 1. A 70 year old man sustained a traffic accident with one hour loss of consciousness. Physical examination revealed a contused area on the medial side of his right forehead. Neurological examination revealed bilateral abducens nerve palsy (Fig. 1). There were no ther cranial nerve abnormalities. Roentgenograms of the skull, inclu

Etiology of bilateral abductor vocal cord paralysis: a review of 389 cases.

The etiology of 389 cases of partial or complete bilateral abductor vocal cord paralysis has been determined and classified. One hundred and forty-nine were infants and children 12 years of age and under; 240 were adults, age 13 and older. In the infants and children the paralyses were congenital in 82 cases, of which 43 were associated with other congenital anomalies, and 39 were without associated anomalies. Fifty-nine cases were considered acquired, most being secondary to underlying congenital anomalies, particularly the associated findings of meningomyelocele, Arnold-Chiari malformation,

Incidence of postoperative epilepsy after a transtentorial approach to acoustic nerve tumours.

Sixty-nine patients who had neurosurgical treatment for acoustic neuroma by one of two different techniques were studied with a view to determining the incidence of postoperative epilepsy. Fourty-five patients who had larger tumours underwent a combined translabyrinthine and transtentorial neurosurgical approach. For the others with smaller neuromas a translabyrinthine method was used. Only the combined approach was associated with postoperative epilepsy, and it occurred in 22% of the patients. Epilepsy was associated with temporal love trauma during surgery.

[Surgery of vertebral aneurysms at the origin of PICA (author's transl)].

Thirteen cases of vertebral aneurysm at the origin of PICA (VA-PICA aneurysm) were operated on at the Department of Neurological Surgery of Kitano Hospital from March, 1970 through July, 1975. Those included 9 cases of saccular aneurysm and 5 cases of fusiform aneurysm (Table 1). The incidence of VA-PICA aneurysms among our whole series of intracranial aneurysms was 4.2%. Patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage were subjected to our routine 4 vessel angiography. For those with suspected vertebral aneurysm vertebral angiography was performed in a transoral projection. In this method, when the ang

Acute neurological complications in the treatment of scoliosis. A report of the Scoliosis Research Society.

A survey conducted by the Scoliosis Research Society found eighty-seven patients with acute neurological complications resulting from the treatment of scoliosis. The incidence of these complications was determined to be 0.72 per cent. Seventy-four major complications involving the spinal cord were reported, half of them complete paraplegia and half partial paraplegia. Thirty-six per cent recovered completely, 32 per cent had partial recovery, and 32 per cent had no return of function. Thirteen minor complications involving cranial and peripheral nerves were reported. Major complications occurr

Aberrant course of the facial nerve.

In our patient the facial nerve was situated in the external bony ear canal without bony protection just below the skin in the lower part of the external ear canal 2 to 3 mm lateral to the tympanic membrane. This abnormal position involves a greate risk of damage to the facial nerve by incisions in the ear canal prior to surgical intervention of the middle ear.

Subdural effusion and brain tumor: case report and survey of the literature.

Optic glioma associated with bilateral subdural effusion in a four-month-old male infant is reported. Review of the cases with subdural effusion or hematoma and brain tumor in the world literature was made. When subdural effusion is found in a newborn or an older infant, the possibility of an associated brain tumor must be considered. Care also should be taken to search for an underlying brain tumor and to exclude dural metastasis when we deal with chronic subdural hematoma in an adult.

[Disturbance of gastric emptying in diabetes mellitus (author's transl)].

The author discusses abnormalities in gastric emptying due to diabetes mellitus, and in particular, diabetic gastroparesis, on the basis of his own experience and the relevant literature. Diabetic gastroparesis is a result of a diabetic neuropathy of the vagus. Even in the presence of mild abdominal symptoms, particularly with repeated hypoglycaemic episodes, this condition should be considered and the stomach should be examined readiologically. A diabetic phytobezoar may develop. It may be presumed that these changes are more common than had previously been realized. The author has observed s
