Efficacy of surgical repair for the functional restoration of injured facial nerve.

BACKGROUND: Early surgical repair to restore nerve integrity has become the most commonly practiced method for managing facial nerve injury. However, the evidence for the efficacy of surgical repair for restoring the function of facial nerves remains deficient. This study evaluated the outcomes of surgical repair for facial nerve lesions. METHODS: This retrospective observational study recruited 28 patients with the diagnosis of facial nerve injury who consecutively underwent surgical repairs from September 2012 to May 2019. All related clinical data were retrospectively analyzed according to

Ratio of Optic Nerve Sheath Diameter to Eyeball Transverse Diameter by Ultrasound Can Predict Intracranial Hypertension in Traumatic Brain Injury Patients: A Prospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Measuring optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD), an indicator to predict intracranial hypertension, is noninvasive and convenient, but the reliability of ONSD needs to be improved. Instead of using ONSD alone, this study aimed to evaluate the reliability of the ratio of ONSD to eyeball transverse diameter (ONSD/ETD) in predicting intracranial hypertension in traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients. METHODS: We performed a prospective study on patients admitted to the Surgery Intensive Care Unit. The included 52 adults underwent craniotomy for TBI between March 2017 and September 2018.

Tick-bite-Induced Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss and Peripheral Facial Palsy.

Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL) and facial paralysis are 2 important otolaryngology emergencies and diagnosing the etiology is very crucial to determine the treatment strategy. Cerebellopontin angle tumors and herpes simplex infections may lead to these situations simultaneously. Also, neurodegerative and systemic infection diseases can affect the cranial nerves VII and VII together. In this article, a patient is presented who had SSHL and facial palsy that occurred after tick bite.

Toxic Optic Neuropathy From Quinine Overdose.

A 45-year-old man presented with longstanding poor vision in both eyes. His medical history was significant for a remote overdose of quinine. After the ingestion, he fell into a coma and on awakening was not able to see light out of both eyes. Several days later, his central vision began to gradually recover and continued to improve over the span of several months. Presently, he had 20/20 visual acuity in both eyes with severely constricted peripheral visual fields. There were bilateral iris transillumination defects, and both optic nerves were diffusely pale with attenuated vasculature and in

Minimally invasive esophagectomy and radical lymph node dissection without recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis.

BACKGROUND: We introduce a novel operative technique to dissect lymph nodes adjacent to the recurrent laryngeal nerve, referred to as the "native tissue preservation" technique. Using this technique, there was no damage to the recurrent laryngeal nerve, which is maintained in its anatomical position. METHODS: From September 2016 to December 2018, minimally invasive esophagectomy was performed in the left lateral decubitus position in 87 patients with esophageal cancer. The native tissue preservation technique for lymphadenectomy around the recurrent laryngeal nerve was used, and all patients

Surgery for posterior fossa meningioma: elevated postoperative cranial nerve morbidity discards aggressive tumor resection policy.

Radical excision of meningioma is suggested to provide for the best tumor control rates. However, aggressive surgery for meningiomas located at the posterior cranial fossa may lead to elevated postoperative morbidity of adjacent cranial nerves which in turn worsens patients' postoperative quality of life. Therefore, we analyzed our institutional database with regard to new cranial nerve dysfunction as well as postoperative cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage depending on the extent of tumor resection. Between 2009 and 2017, 89 patients were surgically treated for posterior fossa meningioma at th

Current perspectives on the surgical management of mandibular third molars in the United Kingdom: the need for further research.

This survey of expert opinion regarding the management of mandibular third molar (M3M) impaction and its clinical sequelae was circulated to all members of the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (BAOMS). It was completed by 289 clinicians who reported treating 60003 patients annually. Respondents included 199 (69%) specialists and 58 (20%) primary care clinicians. Most (99%) of the clinicians treated at least one M3M with complete surgical removal (CSR) annually. Only 69% performed one or more coronectomies (COR). Advocates of coronectomy reported lower rates of inferior al

TcMEP threshold change is superior to A-train detection when predicting facial nerve outcome in CPA tumour surgery.

OBJECT: Surgery of tumours in the cerebellopontine angle (CPA) can lead to loss of facial nerve function. Different methods of intra-operative nerve monitoring (IOM) (including free-running EMG, direct nerve stimulation and transcranial motor evoked potentials (TcMEP)) have been used to predict facial nerve outcome during surgery. Recent research has shown TcMEP threshold increase and the occurrence of A-trains on the EMG to have great potential in doing so. This study compares these two methods and correlates them to House-Brackmann (HB) scores post-op in patients with tumours in the cerebell

Revisiting major anatomical risk factors of maxillary sinus lift and soft tissue graft harvesting for dental implant surgeons.

The anatomical variations of the maxillary sinus septa, greater palatine artery, and posterior superior alveolar arteries might cause unexpected complications when they are damaged. Dentists who know these structures well might hope to learn more practical knowledge to avoid and assess injury preoperatively. Therefore, this review paper aimed to review the reported anatomy and variations of the maxillary sinus septa, greater palatine artery/nerve, and posterior superior alveolar artery, and to discuss what has to be assessed preoperatively to avoid iatrogenic injury. To assess the risk of inju

Facial Nerve Palsy Associated With Orthognathic Surgery.

The authors report a 25-year-old female who presented facial palsy after undergoing bimaxillary orthognathic surgery for retrognathism correction. Orthognathic surgery is a procedure used to treat dentofacial deformities which aims to achieve an adequate relationship between dental archs, improving function (such as chewing, breathing, and speaking) and facial aesthetics. Even though there are some complications that can occur during the intraoperative and postoperative periods like bleeding, tooth, soft-tissue damage, nerve damage, bad split, infection, and nonunion, facial nerve injuries are
