A new method of locating the optic canal based on structures in sella region: computed tomography study.

BACKGROUND: The location of optic canal and the intracranial segment of optic nerve is difficult because of the high possibility of the deficiency of optic protuberance as well as its complex relationship to sphenoid and ethmoidal sinus. A new method of locating the optic canal and a comprehensive analysis of it and the structures around is of great importance. PURPOSE: Our study aimed to provide a new method to locate the optic canal and analyze the relationship between optic canal and other structures in the sella region, which can be a guidance for endoscopic sinus surgery such as the opti

Isolated III cranial nerve palsy: a surprising presentation of an acute on chronic subdural haematoma.

Many aetiologies have been associated with isolated oculomotor nerve palsies. They are ischaemic microangiopathy, posterior communicating artery aneurysm, uncal herniation, neoplasia, traumatic and inflammatory conditions. We report the case of a patient who presented with left oculomotor cranial nerve palsy with an associated large volume left acute on chronic subdural haematoma. Coincidentally, this woman was also found to have a recent history of herpes zoster ophthalmicus.

Masseteric nerve for reanimation of the smile in short-term facial paralysis.

Our aim was to describe our experience with the masseteric nerve in the reanimation of short term facial paralysis. We present our outcomes using a quantitative measurement system and discuss its advantages and disadvantages. Between 2000 and 2012, 23 patients had their facial paralysis reanimated by masseteric-facial coaptation. All patients are presented with complete unilateral paralysis. Their background, the aetiology of the paralysis, and the surgical details were recorded. A retrospective study of movement analysis was made using an automatic optical system (Facial Clima). An easy way to apply orthodontic extraction for impacted lower third molar compressing to the inferior alveolar nerve.

PURPOSE: To study the results of an easy orthodontic extraction method for impacted lower third molar removal which had roots compressing to the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty patients were divided into two groups according to their desire. Orthodontic traction group (n=20) had brackets or mini bone screws on the antagonist maxillary molars as anchorage for orthodontic traction from 3 to 10 weeks until the roots' tip was away from the IAN, the tooth was then removed. Traditional extraction group (n=20) had the tooth removed immediately by the same surgeon. Post-ope

The effects of brain injury on heart rate variability and the innate immune response in critically ill patients.

Brain injury and its related increased intracranial pressure (ICP) may lead to increased vagus nerve activity and the subsequent suppression of innate immunity via the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway. This may explain the observed increased susceptibility to infection in these patients. In the present study, we investigated the association between brain injury, vagus nerve activity, and innate immunity. We determined heart rate variability (HRV) as a measure of vagus nerve activity, plasma cytokines, and cytokine production of ex vivo lipopolysaccharide-stimulated whole blood in the firs

[Direct recording from cochlear nerve via a ball-electrode in transtemporal acoustic neuroma surgery].

BACKGROUND: Intraoperative monitoring (IOM) of the cochlear nerve function during acoustic neuroma surgery is employed to assist in preserving hearing. So far, Auditory Brain-stem Response (ABR) is considered to be an optimal method for intraoperative monitoring in transtemporal approach. The aim of this study was to perform direct recording of the cochlear nerve action potential after resection of the tumor by using a ball-electrode and to evaluate the use of this method in predicting the postoperative hearing. The obtained data were compared to the simultaneous ABR results and to the postope

Bruxism elicited by inferior alveolar nerve injury: a case report.

The aim of this case report is to describe the history of a patient who received an injury to the right inferior alveolar nerve after placement of a dental implant, with bruxism noted afterward. The symptoms were managed by the use of an occlusal appliance worn at night and occasionally during the day, associated with increased awareness of parafunction during the day to reduce muscle pain and fatigue. Paresthesia of the teeth, gingiva, and lower lip persisted but were reduced during appliance use.

Pain without nociception?

We describe a young woman with complete cervical spinal cord transsection, who developed significant abdominal pain, triggered by gastric distension and deep abdominal palpation. On the basis of the nature of her spinal cord injury, her brain-gut axis was limited to vagal pathways. Studies in mammalian models of human visceral sensation consistently showed that the subdiaphragmatic vagus contains a homogeneous population of afferents that are activated by low-intensity stimuli, which are generally believed to be important in regulating autonomic function and perhaps contributing to visceral se

Bilateral mental nerve neuropathy in an adolescent during sickle cell crises.

Mental nerve neuropathy causes the "numb chin" syndrome and is usually associated with mandibular bone injury or disease in adults. It has been reported in adults during sickle cell crises. We describe a 15-year-old boy who developed bilateral mental nerve neuropathies during a sickle cell crisis. This case is unusual because of the simultaneous bilateral involvement and because of the age.

Cochlear implant electrode array misplacement: a cautionary case report.

OBJECTIVE: To report a series of pitfalls and complications in a case of cochlear implantation. METHOD: Case report. RESULTS: An 11-year-old boy affected by auditory neuropathy underwent cochlear implantation. Intra-operative assessment was apparently consistent with correct insertion of the electrode array into the cochlea. However, subsequent high resolution computed tomography revealed that the entire electrode array was curled up within the vestibule. Revision surgery was complicated by cerebrospinal fluid leakage. A straight probe was repeatedly inserted into the internal auditory canal

Availability of CBCT and iatrogenic alveolar nerve injuries.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether the rapid increase in the availability of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) has changed the number of inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) injuries related to the removal of mandibular third molars in Finland. The hypothesis was that the number of nerve injuries should diminish due to better imaging methods. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The number of CBCT devices, the annual number of CBCT examinations and the number of permanent IAN injuries occurring between 1997 and 2007 were analyzed. The data was collected from three national registers: the Radiation and Nuclear Safet
