Intra-orbital organic foreign body injuries occur within the eye but without the involvement of the orbit itself. A 39-year-old man self-presented to the emergency department complaining of sudden onset of pain surrounding his left eye and of reduced vision. The initial examination was unremarkable except for two healing lesion marks above his left upper eyelid. Some swelling with erythematous skin changes was also noted. Computer tomography did not identify a conclusive cause. The patient was assessed by an Ophthalmologist in Eye Casualty and commenced intravenous antibiotics for infection se

INTRODUCTION: Traffic trauma can lead to ocular damage. Open globe injuries usually have a poor prognosis, which can be ameliorated by prompt diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Nonetheless, few studies have focused on the visual outcomes of patients following traffic accidents. In this study, we aimed to examine the characteristics and prognosis of ocular complications in patients following traffic accidents at a specialized tertiary eye hospital.
METHODS: We classified 44 patients from traffic accidents (88 eyes) into groups with equal or better (better group) and worse (worse group) corre

Traumatic orbital fracture with prolapse of the globe into the paranasal sinuses is very rare. The visual prognosis is poor, and the medical and surgical management is still a topic of debate. We herein describe an extremely rare case of globe dislocation into the left maxillary sinus with complete recovery of visual acuity. A 67-year-old man presented with an isolated left-sided orbital floor fracture with dislocation of the globe into the maxillary sinus. The visual acuity was no light perception in his left eye. He was immediately taken to the operating room for globe repositioning and orbi

BACKGROUND: Trauma-induced orbital blowout fracture (OBF) with eyeball displacement into the maxillary sinus is rare.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 14-year-old with a closed head injury, OBF, and displacement of the eyeball into the maxillary sinus following a car accident. A prompt transconjunctival access surgery was performed for eyeball repositioning and orbital reconstruction in a single session, mitigating anaesthesia-related risks associated with multiple surgeries. At the 12-month follow-up, his visual acuity was 20/200. Despite limited eye movement and optic nerve atrop

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Trauma to the maxillofacial region is usually associated with varying degrees of disruption of the soft and hard tissues in the region and injuries to the neighbouring structures such as eyes, brain, nasal apparatus and paranasal sinuses. Injuries to the middle third of the face commonly destroys the integrity of the orbital skeleton, and are frequently complicated by injury to the eye, ranging between 2.7 and 67% as reported in the literature. These injuries may result in loss of vision or compromised ocular function. When these injuries are severe, they may be dete

BACKGROUND Trastuzumab (Herceptin) is a recombinant DNA-derived humanized monoclonal antibody that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved in 1998 for metastatic human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive breast cancer therapy. It selectively binds to the extracellular domain of HER2 and mediates an antibody-dependent cellular toxicity in various tissues. Trastuzumab use alone does not typically cause aggressive ocular complications. However, herein is a case report of a patient presenting with corneal ulceration in both eyes and perforation in the left eye after 2 mon

We present the case of a patient who came to the emergency department with a significant decrease in vision and dilated pupil in the left eye. Since neurological pathologies were primarily considered, diffusion brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and brain computed tomography (CT) were requested. After the results were reported as normal, we were consulted. On examination, the anterior segment was normal but we detected shiny pearl-like formations in the anterior vitreous, condensation at the inferior of the posterior vitreous, and a scar in the macula. When we evaluated the orbital section

BACKGROUND Acquired synkinesis is a well-known phenomenon following oculomotor nerve injury. The abnormal movement appears within the distribution of 1 nerve, or other cranial nerves may be involved. The common misdirection of aberrant regeneration of oculomotor nerve involves the lid, extraocular muscles, or pupil. This report presents a case of aberrant connection between abducens and oculomotor nerve, which is quite rare. CASE REPORT A 21-year-old man with history of left-sided frontal, lateral orbital wall, and zygomatic fracture from head trauma in a motor vehicle accident presented for e

Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is the preferred method for managing obstructive sinus disorders. However, its proximity to the orbit poses a risk of orbital complications. This study presents a case of a 61-year-old female who underwent FESS for chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps and subsequently experienced a serious ophthalmic complication including retrobulbar hemorrhage and medial rectus muscle hematoma, leading to adduction deficit and diplopia. The patient's condition was evaluated through clinical assessment and imaging studies, to address the extent and nature of the

Postoperative vision loss is an unusual but serious side effect that can occur after nonocular surgeries, particularly those involving the heart or spine. Various causes, including ischemic optic neuropathy, central retinal artery occlusion, central retinal vein occlusion, and ischemic orbital compartment syndrome, can cause this condition. Here, we present a case of a 28-year-old male patient who underwent spine surgery for cervicodorsal spine injury and experienced sudden, painless vision loss in his left eye following the surgery. On examination, his right eye had a bedside vision of >3/60,

BACKGROUND: Intraorbital wooden foreign bodies (IOWFBs) constitute a relatively rare ocular trauma. Clinically, it can be difficult to diagnose them due to their wide variety of clinical manifestations. In addition, radiologic diagnosis of IOWFBs is always uncertain and challenging since their low density and low intensity on initial images are identical to air and fat. Therefore, IOWFBs are commonly missed and may not be confirmed for days or months after the initial injury. This article endeavors to contribute to the existing literature on IOWFBs by adding a case of an unusual occurrence of
