Congenital cystic lesions in the floor of the mouth in infants present significant diagnostic challenges owing to overlapping clinical and radiological features. We report a rare case of a one-year-old boy with a gradually enlarging, painless left sublingual swelling noticed since birth. Clinical examination revealed a soft, fluctuant 3 × 4 cm mass that did not move with deglutition or tongue protrusion, along with a small midline submental dimple. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) showed a well-defined, non-enhancing cystic lesion (4.1 × 2.1 × 3.9 cm) in the left sublingual space,

Sublingual lipoma is an exceptionally rare benign lesion of the floor of the mouth and a potential diagnostic challenge because its clinical and radiologic features can overlap with those of other benign lesions. We report the case of a 37-year-old woman who presented with a painless mass in the left floor of the mouth. Magnetic resonance imaging suggested an epidermoid cyst, whereas surgical excision and histopathological examination confirmed a lipoma involving the sublingual gland region. The postoperative course was uneventful. This case highlights that sublingual lipoma should be consider

BACKGROUND: Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm of fibroblastic differentiation, originally described in the pleura and subsequently documented at multiple extrapleural sites. Oral involvement is uncommon and may be diagnostically challenging because of its variable clinical presentation and overlapping spindle-cell morphology.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We report a palatal SFT with clinical, imaging, histopathological and immunohistochemical correlation. In parallel, a systematic review was conducted in PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science for studies published between Janua

We report the case of a fit and well pregnant patient in her 20s who presented with a progressively expansile swelling of the left maxilla. Despite extraction of the presumed causative tooth, the lesion continued to enlarge, extending to the orbital floor and resulting in infraorbital nerve paraesthesia. Post-partum radiological imaging demonstrated a markedly displaced upper left third molar associated with a large lytic lesion obliterating the left maxillary sinus. Differential diagnoses included a dentigerous cyst, ameloblastoma or malignancy.Surgical enucleation of the lesion with removal

OBJECTIVE: Owing to their overlapping radiological characteristics, distinguishing between malignant and benign lesions of the floor of the mouth (FOM) remains challenging. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) texture analysis in discriminating between malignant and benign lesions.
METHODS: MRI texture analysis was performed in 30 patients with FOM lesions (eight inflammatory diseases, ten cystic lesions, three benign tumors, and nine malignant tumors). Based on the histopathological examinations, the lesions were classified as malignant or

OBJECTIVES: To investigate preoperative MRI evaluation of the features of the mylohyoid muscle (MM) predictive of its infiltration in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) treatment planning, defining the most appropriate sequences to study its deep extension into the floor of the mouth (FOM).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We applied a 7-point score to retrospectively evaluate preoperative imaging of patients who underwent surgery for OSCC over 11 years. The results were compared with histopathological findings using Spearman's rank coefficient. Receiver operating characteristic curves were employed t

INTRODUCTION: There has always been a debate regarding the fixation strategy of transverse acetabular fractures. We hypothesized that fixation strength of both column screws would be sufficient to withstand the physiological load across hip joint, resulting in similar functional and radiological outcomes with lower morbidity than plate and column screw combinations in transverse acetabular fractures.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 44 transverse acetabular fracture patients without significant comminution were divided them into three groups based on the type of treatment received, viz., grou

BACKGROUND: Diagnosis of MALT lymphoma in the oral cavity is challenging. There is a great overlap in the histopathologic, immuno-histochemical and molecular features of MALT lymphoma with reactive lymphoid proliferations. The literature shows a very few case reports of primary MALT lymphoma of oral cavity.
METHODS: We discuss the histopathologic, immuno-histochemical, cytogenetic features, treatment and behavior of 3 cases of primary MALT lymphoma oral cavity along with review of literature.
RESULTS: The age ranged from 40 to 57 years (male to female ratio = 2:1). The sites involved were ha

Dermoid cysts are benign cutaneous neoplasms that contain germ cells from the ectoderm and mesoderm. Approximately 70% are diagnosed during childhood before the age of 5. Although they can present throughout the body, the prevalence is 7% for those arising from the head and neck. These lesions present primarily as midline masses and are classified as sublingual, submental, or overlapping depending on their relationship with the muscles of the floor of mouth. A 10-year-old female presented with a 2-week history of right submental swelling. She denied pain, dysphagia, odynophagia, or respiratory

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and clinical features of pigmented oral lesions from Thailand.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Biopsy records of the Department of Oral Pathology, Chulalongkorn University, Department of Oral Diagnosis, KhonKaen University, Department of Oral Biology and Oral Diagnostic Sciences, Chiangmai University, Department of Stomatology, Prince of Songkla University, and Rangsit University were reviewed for oral pigmented lesions diagnosed during 1999 to 2019. Demographic data were culled from the biopsy records. Ages of the patients were subdivi

Sarcomatoid carcinomas are biphasic tumors proven to be monoclonal dedifferentiated forms of conventional squamous carcinomas. This study evaluates their clinicopathologic characteristics in head and neck mucosal sites and the problems in distinguishing them from other spindle cell tumors. A total of 103 cases with a confirmed diagnosis of sarcomatoid carcinoma accessioned in the pathology department of a tertiary referral cancer centre over a period of 7 years (2004-2010) were studied. An algorithm used for their diagnosis is presented. Ages of the patients were 22-90 years (median 53 years),
