BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) frequently experience dysphonia, leading to communication difficulties, social participation restrictions, and reduced quality of life. In the absence of consensus guidelines, we conducted a systematic review to synthesize evidence on diagnostic tools and rehabilitation protocols for dysphonia after SCI, with the aim of informing clinical practice and future research.
METHODS: Six biomedical, rehabilitation, and speech pathology databases were searched, along with reference lists of relevant studies. Inclusion criteria were as

Follow-up care for traumatic brain injury (TBI) in the United States ranges from inconsistent, at best, to non-existent most predominantly. The present study aimed to gather patient perspectives on acute and post-acute TBI care using a phenomenological approach guided by the Patient Experience Framework, Chronic Care Model, and Health Literacy Framework. Using a pre-defined, semi-structured interview guide, including four groups of 35 diverse people diagnosed by a medical provider with "mild" TBI within 24 months, the study qualitatively explored their patient care experience, the care they re

CONTEXT: The prevalence of central neuropathic pain (cNeuP) is increasing, particularly in older patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) without radiographic abnormalities resulting from minor external forces. Preclinical research has shown the effectiveness of gabapentinoid treatment for cNeuP after SCI in the spinal cord without stenosis. However, no studies have reported the efficacy of this treatment in models of spinal cord compressive lesions.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of mirogabalin for cNeuP after SCI in a rat model of chronic spinal cord compressive lesions.
METHODS: A mode

BACKGROUND: Glioblastoma intramedullary spinal cord metastasis (GISCM) is a rare sequela of high-grade astrocytoma and glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). Discrete intramedullary spinal cord metastases are less common than spinal leptomeningeal spread and may follow a more indolent course. Once identified as GISCM, palliative maximal safe resection of the tumor may be considered to alleviate neurological symptoms. Reports describing the surgical management of these rare lesions, including the use of emerging technologies that may aid in maximal safe resection, are sparse. A further understanding is

Chronic neuropathic pain is a debilitating consequence of spinal cord injury (SCI), yet effective treatments remain limited. Exercise reduces pain incidence after SCI, but the underlying mechanisms linking vascular and immune regulation to pain resilience are unclear. Here, we investigated how aerobic exercise influences blood brain/spinal cord barrier (BBB/BSCB) integrity, vascular protein expression, and neuroimmune activation along the sensory neuroaxis. Female rats received unilateral cervical SCI or served as uninjured controls and were assigned to sedentary or forced wheel exercise group

INTRODUCTION: Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) results in irreversible neuronal loss and glial scar formation, severely impairing motor function and quality of life. This study aimed to develop a bioactive composite scaffold-comprising Hydroxyapatite nanorods (HAp) and a selfassembling peptide hydrogel (IGL-Gel)-to promote Neural Stem Cell (NSC)-based regeneration in SCI treatment.
METHODS: HAp nanorods were synthesized via hydrothermal methods and incorporated into an acetylated peptide hydrogel functionalized with the IKVAV motif. The physicochemical properties, rheology, and self-healing behavior

Giant calcified thoracic disc herniations are rare and represent a major surgical challenge due to their association with myelopathy, vascular compromise, and high perioperative morbidity. We report the case of a 62-year-old woman with progressive myelopathy secondary to a giant calcified thoracic disc herniation at the T7-T8 level. Surgical management via a lateral extracavitary approach was complicated by wrong-level discectomy, incomplete resection of the calcified disc, progressive spinal cord injury, cerebrospinal fluid fistula, infectious complications, and death. This case highlights cr

Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are a frequent complaint after spinal cord injury and disease (SCI/D). As such, the majority of people with upper motor neuron SCI/D utilize medications for neurogenic detrusor overactivity (NDO), and overtreatment with systemic antimicrobials is common. Many people with SCI/D utilize urinary catheters for bladder management. These devices offer a conduit for delivery of targeted intravesical therapeutics for both NDO and LUTS (including those due to urinary tract infection [UTI]), which have the potential for greater efficacy due to higher concentration of

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating neurological disorder that can result in permanent disability and reduced quality of life, characterized by heterogeneous injury mechanisms and limited tools for accurate early diagnosis and prognostic stratification. The clinical course of SCI is driven not only by the initial mechanical insult but also by complex secondary injury cascades involving neuroinflammation, axonal degeneration, demyelination, and maladaptive repair responses. Current diagnostic and prognostic approaches, which rely largely on neurological examination and imaging, provide li

BACKGROUND: Lung injury secondary to acute spinal cord injury (ASCI) is a critical pathological basis for respiratory complications such as pneumonia and respiratory failure, which are major contributors to early mortality and poor outcomes in affected individuals. Despite its clinical relevance, the underlying mechanisms linking ASCI to pulmonary dysfunction remain poorly understood. In this study, we evaluated the role of Lipocalin-2 (LCN2) in ASCI-induced lung injury and investigated the potential involvement of the LCN2/MAPK/ERK signaling axis in this process.
METHODS: A mouse model of AS
