Splice Type-Specific Effects of Gαo Subunits on Cerebellar Anatomy and Synapse Formation.

This study investigated the effect of single Gαo1 and Gαo2, as well as double Gαo1/2 knockout on the cerebellar anatomy and synapse formation. The alpha subunit of the G protein Go exists in two splice variants. Knockout of certain Gαo subtypes result in strong-mainly motor-deficits in mice, and mutations in the responsible gene locus in humans can result in severe encephalopathies. We aimed to decipher the hitherto incompletely understood contribution of the individual Gαo subunits to the anatomy and synapse formation of the cerebellum. Knockout of Gαo1 reduced the size of the cerebellum by 1

Distinct coexisting pathologies of oral malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor with melanin pigmentation and indolent small lymphocytic lymphoma.

Spindle cell malignancies of the oral cavity are uncommon and pose considerable diagnostic challenges due to overlapping histomorphology and immunohistochemical features. Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST) with heterologous differentiation is particularly rare. Moreover, its coexistence with a synchronous hematological malignancy such as small cell lymphoma (SLL) is exceedingly unusual. A male 62 year, presented with a progressively enlarging, pigmented, ulcero-proliferative painless mass over the right upper alveolus extending to the hard palate. Imaging revealed a heterogeneousl

A giant retropharyngeal space lipoma: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Lipoma is the most common benign mesenchymal tumor; however, its occurrence in the retropharyngeal space (retropharyngeal lipoma [RPL]) is exceedingly rare. Due to the softness and distensibility of the retropharyngeal space, RPLs can enlarge significantly without causing any symptoms, resulting in wide variability in tumor size at diagnosis. Although tumor size inevitably influences symptom burden and treatment strategies, no review has focused specifically on "giant" RPLs. Herein, we report a case of exceptionally large RPL and review previously reported giant cases with a maximu

Case reports that high-dose-rate brachytherapy using custom-designed mouthpiece mold for early-stage squamous cell carcinoma of the hard palate is useful.

BACKGROUND: Surgery is the primary therapy for hard palate cancer, but this sometime worsens oral function and unavailable for patients with several comorbidities. Radiotherapy represents an alternative curative treatment option to preserve oral function, however, there are few reports on the use of radiotherapy for squamous cell carcinoma of the hard palate (SCCHP). High-dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy has been known as an effective treatment for SCCHP, which seems to be less invasive when mold technique is used. In our hospital, the HDR customized mold brachytherapy (HDR- customized MBT) is av

Prevalence, practices, and maternal perceptions of traditional uvulectomy among sudanese children and adolescents: A community-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Traditional uvulectomy (TU) is the removal of the uvula, either partially or totally, by the traditional healer. It is prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa, driven by cultural beliefs and perceived therapeutic benefits, despite the risks of complications such as bleeding, infections, and death, and limited data exist. Our study aimed to assess the prevalence and practice of traditional uvulectomy among Sudanese children and adolescents, along with maternal perceptions, and identify associated risk factors. METHOD: A descriptive community-based cross-sectional study was conducted betwee

Panoramic Landmarks: Comparing LLM-Assisted, Manual Tracing, and Self-Directed Learning in Dental Education.

BACKGROUND: Accurate identification of anatomical landmarks on panoramic radiographs is a foundational yet challenging skill in dentistry. Traditional didactic teaching often requires supplementation to achieve proficiency. This study evaluates and compares the efficacy of three supplementary learning modalities: self-directed learning (SDL), traditional manual tracing (MT), and an AI-driven approach using ChatGPT. METHODS: In this prospective study, 63 third-year dental students were assigned to one of three groups (n = 21 each): SDL, MT, or ChatGPT-assisted learning. Following a theoretical

Iatrogenic uvular necrosis after general anaesthesia.

We report the case of a mid-30s parturient who presented with sore throat and dysphagia a day after undergoing laparoscopic right ovarian cystectomy under general anaesthesia. The procedure of intubation and extubation was straightforward and there were no complications in the airway intraoperatively. However, when she awoke the next day, she noticed white discolouration at the inferior portion of her uvula but no oral discharge or bleeding was appreciated. She was discharged on analgesics. Within a few days, she noted improvement of her symptoms and on the 28th day post-surgery, the mucosal c

Real-world outcomes of photoimmunotherapy for oral sites in head and neck cancer: A multicentre subgroup analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate clinical outcomes and supportive-care needs in photoimmunotherapy (PIT) restricted to oral sites in a multicentre real-world cohort. METHODS: We retrospectively analysed 40 consecutive patients with unresectable, locally recurrent head and neck cancer undergoing PIT between 1 January 2021 and 31 August 2024. The oral-site subgroup comprised 12 patients receiving ≥1 illumination to the oral cavity (tongue, gingiva, buccal mucosa, floor of mouth, hard palate, or flap). The primary endpoint was objective response rate (ORR). Secondary endpoints included time-to-treatment f

Reconstruction of Extensive Midfacial Defects After Nasal Cavity Cancer Using Three Free Flaps.

Reconstruction of extensive midfacial defects poses significant challenges due to the need for simultaneous restoration of function and appearance. In this report, the authors present a case of an extensive midfacial defect following nasal cavity cancer resection, in which favorable functional and aesthetic outcomes were achieved through reconstruction using three free flaps. The first free flap-a thoracodorsal artery perforator flap combined with scapular bone was used for hard palate reconstruction; the second, a forearm flap prefabricated with costal cartilage was used to reconstruct the ex

Uvular tip necrosis following routine diagnostic oesophagogastroduodenoscopy.

Uvular necrosis is an uncommon complication following oesophagogastroduodenoscopy (OGD). We report a case involving a male in his 20s who developed uvular necrosis following a routine OGD performed under conscious sedation. The patient presented three days postprocedure with a worsening sore throat and odynophagia. Examination revealed an erythematous uvula with a necrotic tip. He was managed conservatively with simple analgesia, topical lidocaine and oral antibiotics with eventual full resolution of symptoms with no lasting sequelae. This case highlights a rare yet significant complication of

Comparison of Using Palatal and Lingual Flaps to Repair Acquired Medium to Large-Size Hard Palate Defects Based on a Grid Palatal Horizontal Plane Palatal Defect Classification System.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the clinical outcomes of repairing acquired palatal defects using palatal island rotation flaps (PRFs) or anteriorly based dorsal tongue flaps (aTFs). METHODS: In total, 39 patients (23 males and 16 females) aged 22 to 74 years (median: 48.4 y) were included. According to the grid-based palatal horizontal plane palatal defect classification system, palatal defects were divided into 3 classes (classes I, II, and III); hard palate defects (classes I and II) were further subdivided into 3 subtypes (a, b, and c). Medium and large-sized defects accounted for

Palatal Mucosal Inflammation Caused by an Unusual Foreign Body in an Infant.

Infants may place various objects in their mouths during the developmental process, which can sometimes involve life-threatening risks, such as choking. We describe the case of a 1-year 3-month-old female with a foreign body in the oral cavity. She was referred to our hospital with chief complaints of suspected supernumerary teeth and blisters, and the initial examination revealed blister-like swelling and a white swelling on the hard palate. Intraoral photographs were obtained and examined from multiple angles, revealing findings that resembled a character. Careful re-examination showed that

Glycogen storage disease type XIV in the Middle East and North Africa region: A case report.

BACKGROUND: This case report expands the limited literature on phosphoglucomutase-1 deficiency (GSD XIV), a rare disorder that combines features of glycogen storage disease and congenital disorders of glycosylation. Given its wide clinical spectrum and often subtle early signs, under-recognition remains common. We report this case to highlight its multisystem involvement, emphasize diagnostic challenges, and reinforce the need for early consideration of GSD XIV in patients with unexplained hepatic, metabolic, and neuromuscular abnormalities. CASE SUMMARY: We describe a case of a three-year-ol

Etiologic heterogeneity across oral cavity cancers.

BACKGROUND: Oral cavity cancers are generally considered etiologically similar, with a majority (>75%) attributable to smoking/alcohol. Yet, incidence trends for oral cavity cancers have recently diverged in the United States and several European countries (with declines for most oral cavity cancers but increases for oral tongue cancers), suggesting etiologic differences. This study quantified etiologic heterogeneity across oral cavity cancers using data from the NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study. METHODS: Cox regression models were used to quantify associations (hazard ratios [HRs] and populati

The Ecto-Endodermal Boundary in the Oral and Pharyngeal Mucosa: A Narrative Review.

Introduction: The ecto-endodermal boundary in the human oral cavity remains debated. Rather than a distinct line, this transition forms a complex interface, especially in the developing mouth and pharynx. This ambiguity is clinically relevant, as, for example, HPV-induced tumors often arise where ecto- and endoderm meet. The boundary is generally placed at the posterior third of the tongue and behind the uvula, though its developmental basis remains unclear. This review summarizes the literature on the embryological development of the mouth and pharynx to trace origins and interactions of ecto

Radiological evaluation of the morphology of the greater palatine grooves of the hard palate in the Iraqi population utilising CBCT.

BACKGROUND: The greater palatine groove (GPG), crest, and bridge show different forms; to avoid problems during dental implant and periodontal surgeries, it is important to know how they change their forms. It is the first time to be inspected in the Iraqi population. METHODS: Two hundred patients (100 males and 100 females), ranging from 18 to 86 years old, had their CBCT scans retrospectively analysed. The first (M6) and second molar (M7) areas were examined for the presence and frequency of GPGs, crests, and bridges. Using Chi-square and t-tests with a significance level of 0.05, the data

Visual motion does not bias gravity-referenced vestibular coding in the primate cerebellar nodulus and uvula.

Visual motion is known to influence perceptions of tilt, verticality, and translation, suggesting that optic flow is combined with vestibular cues to estimate orientation relative to gravity. The cerebellar nodulus and ventral uvula (NU) are a prime candidate to perform this computation because this region uniquely receives convergent semicircular canal, otolith, and proprioceptive inputs, and in non-primate species full-field visual motion robustly modulates NU activity. Here, we tested whether visual roll motion, known to bias perceived orientation relative to gravity, alters the internal gr
